1 SWING CHECK BALL VALVES Installation Instructions SCBV-3A-0407 Read all applicable instructions and procedures thoroughly before starting. Suitability of the intended service application must be determined prior to installation. Please review Material Considerations in Application and System Design, in the Materials section of Spears THERMOPLASTIC VALVE PRODUCT GUIDE & ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS, V-4, for important additional considerations related to valve installations. Plastic piping systems must be engineered, installed, operated and maintained in accordance with accepted standards and procedures for plastic piping systems. It is absolutely necessary that all design, installation, operation and maintenance personnel be trained in proper handling, installation requirements and precautions for installation and use of plastic piping systems before starting. SPECIAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION Swing Check & Ball Valves are designed for horizontal installations, but may be installed in up-fl ow only vertical applications. The Ball Valve must be installed on the down stream side with the Check Valve fl ow arrows ( ) pointing in the direction of fl ow. Check valve portion must be oriented with FOR HORIZONTAL USE, THIS SIDE UP dead center topside. Do not install upside down. A minimum of 10 pipe diameters should be maintained from any pump, turn or turbulent source. LUBRICATION WARNING: Some Lubricants, including vegetable oils, are known to cause stress cracking in thermoplastic materials. Formulation changes by lubricant manufacturers may alter compatibility of previously acceptable materials and are beyond our control. Lubricants are not required for installation of valves. & COMPONENT PREPARATION STEP 1 Pipe Preparation - Prepare connecting pipes as required. Pipe ends must be cut square at using a wheel type cutter or a saw and miter box. Regardless of the cutting method used, burrs will be created, which must be removed. All pipe ends should be beveled at 10 to 1. A deburring tool is recommended, however a fi le may be used in its place as shown. Deburr & Bevel STEP 2 Remove Union Nuts (1, 2), Check Valve (3) and End Connector (4) from the Valve Body (). Wipe away all loose dirt & moisture from the pipes & components with a clean, dry cloth. Slide small Union Nut (2) over pipe end where End Connector Socket (4) is to be installed, being sure that the Union Nut threads face the valve body. STEP 3 Check the Joint Interference fi t between the pipe and the End Connector Socket. An Interference Fit is necessary for proper fusion of the joint. To check, lightly insert the End Connector Socket over the prepared pipe ends. DO NOT FORCE THE SOCKET ONTO THE. Interference fi t must occur between 1/2 the Socket depth (FULL INTERFERENCE FIT) and the Socket bottom (NET FIT). Do not use components which do not properly mate. End Connector (or Valve Socket ) Slide Union Nut onto pipe FIRST Socket Depth Union Nut threads face Valve Body (3) NET FIT SOLVENT CEMENT WELDED JOINTS 1 2 Valv End Connector (or Valve Socket ) For best results, installation must be made at temperatures between 40 F and 110 F. All joint components must be inspected for any breaking, chipping, gouging or other visible damage before proceeding. All pipe, fi ttings and valves must be removed from their packaging or containers 3 ½ Socket Depth Socket Depth 4 FULL INTERFERENCE FIT 1 2

2 and exposed to the installation environment for a minimum of one hour in order to thermally balance all components. All joining components must be clean and dry. TAKE EXTRA CARE THAT NO PRIMER OR SOLVENT CEMENT IS ALLOWED TO COME IN CONTACT WITH INTERNAL VALVE COMPONENTS. True Union type end connectors are removable. To avoid problems, NEVER ASSEMBLE THE TO THE END CONNECTORS WHILE THEY ARE ATTACHED TO THE VALVE CARTRIDGE. Hold joint together for approximately 30 seconds to make sure that the End Connector Socket does not back off of pipe. Use a cloth to remove any excess cement from the exterior juncture of the pipe and End Connector. STEP 1 Primer is necessary to penetrate & soften both pipe and End Connector Socket surfaces in order for the solvent cement to properly bond. Using a brush or applicator size no less than 1/2 the pipe diameter, apply a liberal coat of primer with a circular, scrubbing motion to the inside socket of the End Connector until the surface is softened and semi-fl uid. This will occur in to 1 seconds, depending on size and temperature. STEP 2 Solvent Cement must be applied IMMEDIATELY to the primed surfaces before the primer dries, in an alternating 3- coat application. Using a brush or applicator no less than 1/2 the pipe diameter, apply a liberal coat of solvent cement to the primed pipe surfaces. Next, apply a light to medium coat to the End Connector Socket primed surface. If a NET FIT was experienced during the dry fi t check (See Step 3) then apply an additional liberal coat again to the pipe surface. STEP 3 Immediately following the application of solvent cement, and before it begins to set, insert the End Connector Socket over the pipe end, push with a 1/4 twisting motion to evenly distribute the solvent cement within the joint. A full bead of solvent cement should form around the circumference of the joint. STEP 4 Repeat Steps 1, 2 & 3 to Solvent Cement Ball Valve to opposing pipe end. STEP Initial Set & Cure Time must be followed in accordance with the solvent cement manufacturer s instructions. FINAL ASSEMBLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION: DO NOT use any type of thread sealants on Union Nuts. Hand tighten only. BE SURE that the face of the end connector socket is squarely aligned (fl ush) with the valve body and is fl ush against the O-ring. STEP 1 Inspect End Connector and Check Valve O-rings for signs of Dirt & Debris. Remove O-rings, clean all surfaces and reinstall by pressing the O-rings evenly into their retaining grooves, being sure to avoid any wrinkles or creation of an uneven sealing surface. The large O-ring fits the Check Valve & the smaller O-ring fits the end connector. 3 4

3 STEP 2 After solvent cement has set, rotate Ball Valve Handle to CLOSED position, attach Check Valve Body to Ball Valve Body and tighten the (large) Union Nut while positioning the Check Valve until FOR HORIZONTAL USE: THIS SIDE UP appears plumb on top. FOR HORIZONTAL USE: THIS SIDE UP STEP 4 Pressure test the system only after all solvent cement joints have fully cured. If any leaks are found at End Connectors during pressure check, use a strap wrench to tighten Union Nut 1/4 turn to stop the leak. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN AS DAMAGE MAY OCCUR. PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS Tighten Union Nut CAUTION: The system must be designed and installed so as not to pull the components in any direction. Pipe system must be cut and installed in such a manner as to avoid all stress loads associated with bending, pulling, or shifting. All piping systems must be supported. Align Check Valve STEP 3 Align Check Valve Body to End Connector. Adjust pipe(s) to bring end connector face flush with Check Valve body. Engage Union Nut to threaded end of Check Valve and begin to tighten Union Nut. CAUTION: BEFORE THE VALVE IS CYCLED, all dirt, sand grit or other material shall be fl ushed from the system. This is to prevent scarring of internal components. WARNING: System should not be operated or fl ushed out at fl ow velocities greater than feet per second. NOT FOR USE WITH COMPRESSED AIR OR GAS DO NOT use the union nut to draw together any gaps between the end connector and the valve body. WARNING: Do not use compressed air or gas to test any PVC or CPVC thermoplastic piping product or system, and do not use devices propelled by compressed air or gas to clear the systems. These practices may result in explosive fragmentation of system piping and components causing bodily injury or death. BE SURE that the face of the end connector socket is squarely aligned (flush) with the valve body and is flush against the O-ring All air must be bled from the system during the initial fl uid fi ll. Pressure testing of the system must not be made until all solvent cement joints have properly cured. Initial pressure testing must be made at approximately 10% of the system hydrostatic pressure rating to identify potential problems prior to testing at higher pressures. Por favor revise Consideraciones de material en aplicación y sistema de diseño, en la SECCIÓN DE MATERIALES DE LA GUÍA DE PRODUCTOS DE VÁLVULAS TERMOPLÁSTICAS Y ESPECIFICACIONES DE INGENIERÍA DE Spears, V-4, para consideraciones importantes relacionadas con instalaciones de válvulas. Los sistemas de tubería plásticos deben ser, instalados, operados y mantenidos de acuerdo a los estándars y procedimientos aceptados para los sistemas de tubería plásticos. Es absolutamente necesario que todo el personal de diseño, instalación, operación y mantenimiento séa entrenado en el manejo adecuado y los requerimientos y precauciones de instalación y uso de sistemas de tuberías plásticos antes de comenzar. INFORMACION ESPECIAL DE INSTALACION Las válvulas de bola y de retención de culumpio son para instalaciones horizontales pero pueden ser instaladas en aplicaciones verticales con la dirección de fl ujo hacia arriba. La Válvula de Bola debe ser instalada de el lado de la correinte hacia abajo con las fl echas de la válvula de retención apuntando en la dirección del fl ujo ( ). La válvula de retención debe colocarse con FOR HORIZONTAL USE, THIS SIDE UP al centro de la parte de arriba. No la instale Boca abajo. Se debe mantener un mínimo de 10 diámetros del tubo de cualquier sistema de bombeo, o de una desviacion de o de cualquier turbulencia. ADVERTENCIA SOBRE LUBRICACION: Algunos lubricantes incluyendo aceites vegetales, son conocidos como causantes de fisuras en materiales termoplásticos.cambios de formulación de los fabricantes pueden alterar la compatibilidad de materiales previamente aceptados y están fuera de nuestro control. El uso de lubricantes no es requerido para la instalación de válvulas. PREPARACION DEL TUBO Y DE LOS COMPONENTES PASO 1 Preparación del Tubo - Prepare la conexión como es requerido. Los extremos de los tubos deben ser cortados en un ángulo recto, usando un cortador de tipo de disco o una sierra y caja de ingletes. Sin importar cual sea el metodo de corte usado, las rebabas que se generan deben ser removidas. Los tubos deben ser biselados de 10 a 1. Herramientas comerciales para biselado y rebabe son recomendadas, también puede usarse una lima industrial como se muestra en el gráfico. PASO 2 Remueva las tuercas de unión (1, 2), Válvula de retención (3) y el conector final (4) del cuerpo de la válvula (). Limpie todas las impurezas y la humedad del los tubos y los componentes. Deslice la pequeña tuerca de unión(2) sobre el conector final del tubo donde se encuentra el conector del zócalo (4) que va a ser instalado, asegurándose que las roscas de la unión encaren el cuerpo de la válvula. PASO 3 Una interferencia entre el tubo y la inserción de la válvula es necesaria para una buena fusión de la conexión. Para revisar, inserte ligeramente el tubo dentro de la inserción del conector. NO LO FUERCE. La interferencia entre el tubo y la válvula debe estar entre la mitad 1/2 de la profundidad de la inserción (Ajuste de interferencia completo) y el fondo de éste (Ajuste neto). No use componentes que se ajusten inadecuadamente. Conector Final Primero Deslice la tuerca de unión dentro del tubo. TOTAL FIJACIÓN Profundidad de la Conexión La tuerca de unión se enrosca mirando hacia el cuerpo de la válvula. (3) UNIONES HECHAS CON CEMENTO SOLVENTE Para mejores resultados, la instalación deber ser hecha a temperaturas entre 40 F y 110 F. Todos los componentes de la conexión deben ser inspeccionados por roturas, fisuras, muescas u otro daño posible antes de proceder. PASO 4 Repita los pasos 1, 2 & 3 para pegar la válvula de bola al conector final opuesto del tubo. CERCIORESE QUE EL PRIMER O EL CEMENTO SOLVENTE NO ENTREN EN CONTACTO CON LA BOLA U OTROS COMPONENTES DE LA VALVULA. Los conectores tipo True Union son removibles. Para evitar problemas, NUNCA ENSAMBLE EL TUBO A LOS CONECTORES FINALES MIENTRAS ESTEN UNIDOS AL CARTUCHO DE LA VALVULA. PASO 1 Es necesario que el Primer penetre y suavice las superficies de la tubería para que el cemento solvente una correctamente. Con una brocha o aplicador de tamaño no menor de la mitad (1/2) del diámentro de la conexión, aplique una generosa capa de Primer con un movimiento circular en el área de inserción de la válvula hasta que la superficie se ablande y esté semi-fluida. Esto puede tomar de a 1 segundos dependiendo del tamaño y la temperatura. PASO 2 El cemento solvente debe ser aplicado INMEDIATAMENTE a las superficies con Primer antes que éste se seque. En una aplicación alternada de 3 capas. Usando un cepillo o aplicador de no menos de la mitad (1/2) del diámetro del tubo, aplique una generosa capa de cemento solvente a la superficie del tubo con primer, luego aplique una ligera o mediana capa en la inserción con primer de la válvula. Si un Ajuste Neto se presenta durante el chequeo del secado del ajuste (Paso 3), aplique una capa adicional a la superficie del tubo. PASO 3 Inmediatamente después de la aplicación del cemento solvente y antes de que solidifique, inserte el tubo dentro de la inserción de la válvula con un movimiento de torción de 1/4 de vuelta para distribuir uniformemente el cemento entre la unión. Una capa completa de cemento se debe formar alrededor de la circunferencia de la unión. Sostenga la unión por 30 segundos para asegurarse que el tubo no se mueva o salga de la inserción. Limpie con un trapo la suciedad y la humedad. PASO El tiempo inicial de asentamiento y tiempo de cura deben apegarse a las instrucciones del fabricante del cemento solvente. ENSAMBLE FINAL INFORMACION IMPORTANTE: NO use ningún tipo de sellantes de cinta en las tuercas de unión. Apriete con la mano sólamente. ASEGURESE que la cara de el conector del zócalo esté alineada con el cuerpo de la válvula y este alineada contra el anillo-o. PASO 1 Revise que el conector final y los anillos-o del la válvula de retención no tengan suciedad ni impurezas. Remueva los anillos-o, limpie las superficies y reinstale presionando los anillos-o dentro sus espacios de retención, evite crear arrugas o desequilibrio en la superficie de sellado. El anillo-o grande encaja en la válvula de retención y los anillos pequeños encajan en el conector final. 3 4

6 PASO 2 Después de que el cemento se haya secado, rote la manija de la válvula de bola a la posición de cerrado, pegue el cuerpo de la válvula de retención a la válvula de bola y apriete la Tuerca de unión grande mientras coloca la válvula de retención en la posición FOR HORIZONTAL USE: THIS SIDE UP (PARA USO HORIZONTAL: ESTE LADO ARRIBA) en la parte superior. PARA USO HORIZONTAL: ESTE LADO ARRIBA PASO 4 Pruebe la presión del sistema sólo cuando las uniones con cemento solvente se hayan secado. Si se presentan escapes durante la prueba de presión, use una llave de correa para apretar la tuerca de unión con 1/4 de giro para detener el escape. NO APRIETE DEMASIADO PARA EVITAR DAÑOS. PRECAUCIONES Y ADVERTENCIAS Apriete la Tuerca de Unión PRECAUCION: El sistema se debe diseñar e installar de manera que la válvula no sea estirada en ninguna dirección. La tubería debe ser cortada e instalada de manera que se eviten todas las cargas de tensión asociadas con la fl exión, estiramiento o cambio de posición. La válvula debe tener sufi ciente soporte. Alinee la válvula de retención PRECAUCION: Antes de que la válvula sea operada, toda la suciedad, arena u otro material deben ser limpiados del sistema. Esto es para prevenir las fi suras en componentes internos. ADVERTENCIA: Los sistemas no deben ser operados o enjuagados con velocidades de fl ujo mayores a pies por segundo. PASO 3 Alinee la válvula de retención con el conector final. Ajuste los tubos para juntar la cara del conector final con el cuerpo de la válvula. Encaje la Tuerca de Unión al extremo con rosca del la válvula de retención y empiece a apretar la Tuerca de Unión. No use la tuerca de unión para unir espacios entre el conector final y el cuerpo de la válvula.. NO PARA USO DE AIRE COMPRIMIDO O GAS ADVERTENCIA: NO USE AIRE O GAS COMPRIMIDO PARA PROBAR NINGUN SISTEMA O PRODUCTO DE TUBERIA TERMOPLASTICO, DE PVC O CPVC, Y NO USE ARTEFACTOS CON PROPULSION DE AIRE O GAS PARA LIMPIAR LOS SISTEMAS. ESTO PUEDE TENER COMO RESULTADO LA FRAGMENTACION EXPLOSIVA DE LOS SISTEMAS Y COMPONENTE DE TUBERIA, CAUSANDO HERIDAS GRAVES O FATALES. ASEGURESE que la cara de el conector del zócalo esté alineada con el cuerpo de la válvula y sea juagada contra el anillo-o. Todo el aire debe ser sacado del sistema durante el llenado inicial del liquido. Pruebas de presión del sitema no pueden realizarce hasta que las conexiones se hayan curado completamente. La prueba de presión inicial debe hacerse aproximadamente a un 10% del grado hidrostático de presión para identifi car problemas antes de ser probado a presiones más altas.
