1 SF Community Week of February 15, 2011 NEWS STRONG INDIVIDUALS Hello Families! Thank you so much to all the families who participated and volunteered at the Pancake Breakfast or the School Site Council summit on Saturday. There have been many fewer cars left double parked and unattended during drop-off and pick-up. Thank you for that collective effort. Now we have a new safety concern. There are cars stopping on Excelsior or on the crosswalk for drop-off, this is unsafe for the many children and families who walk to school. Please only drop off your child on the school side lane of Paris St. and double park at least a car space behind the crosswalk so other cars can safely pass. Some middle school students who are not part of our After School Program have come back to campus after school hours (between 3:45-5:00). This is a concern as there is no one to supervise them at this time. Please make sure your child has a plan for after school (whether it be home, Boys and Girls Club, our after school program or otherwise). Children who are not in the After School Program are not allowed on school grounds without a specific reason (such as tutoring). Please help us with this effort. STRONG COMMUNITY Saturday Feb 26 th African American Honor Celebration SF Community 11:00am-1:30pm + Thursday Feb 24 th We support our students to be strong individuals through the following classroom and school activities: K/1: Students in Ms. Redd s class are using technology every day to do their morning meeting word and math work. 2/3: Students in 2/3 are working on more sophisticated strategies to solve addition, subtraction and multiplication problems. Middle School: The progress reports for the third quarter went home last week. Please ask your child to see his/her progress report and call your child s advisor with any questions! SF Community School Semana de 15 de febrero de 2011 NOTICIAS Muchas gracias a las familias que participaron y ayudaron en el Desayuno con Panqueques ó en la reunión cumbre para los concilios del sitio escolar en sábado. Ha habido mucho menos autos estacionados en doble fila y dejados descuidados. Gracias por el esfuerzo colectivo. Ahora tenemos otra preocupación sobre la seguridad. Parar los autos en la calle Excelsior ó en la esquina para dejar a los niños no es seguro para los niños y familias que caminan a la escuela. Por favor solamente dejar a sus hijos en la calle Paris al lado de la escuela y estacione a tanta distancia de la esquina que haya espacio para que los otros autos puedan pasar con seguridad. Unos estudiantes de la escuela intermedia que no participan en el programa Después de Escuela han regresado a la escuela en la tarde (entre 3:45-5:00). Es una preocupación porque no hay nadie para supervisarles a esa hora. Por favor asegure que su hijo tenga una plan para después de escuela (que sea regresar a la casa, irse al Club, nuestro programa Después de Escuela, u otro lugar). The School Site Council is made up of educators, parents, and sometimes students. The idea of the SSC is based on three main ideas: Adults close to students should be involved in making decisions that affect instruction. School plans are more effective when more people help develop them. When families participate in their children s education, the whole school improves. The role of School Site Council members is: To make decisions about State and Federal budgets To oversee the program at school To coordinate different ways to get input from families To attend all the School Site Council meetings We meet about 7 times a year and try to look honestly at what is happening at our school. We recognize what is going well and identify areas we want to change and improve. We also look at budgets and decide how to use the budgets to help our students the most. Cada Escuela publica en California tiene un Concilio Escolar. Los que son parte del Concilio Escolar son maestros, padres, y de ves en cuando estudiantes. El Concilio escolar esa basada en tres ideas: Los adultos mas cerca en relación a los estudiantes deben de tener la oportunidad de influir las decisiones que afectan instrucción. Los planes escolares son mas efectivos cuando mas gente esta involucrado en crear los. Cuando familias participan en la educación de sus hijos, toda la escuela mejora. El rol de los miembros del Concilio Escolar es Participar en las decisiones de los presupuestos estatales y federales Supervisar las programas de la escuela Coordinar la opinión de todas las familias Asistir todos las reuniones del Concilio Escolar. Nos reunimos 7 veces al año y tratamos de averiguar lo que esta sucediendo en nuestra escuela. Reconocemos lo que va bien, y identificamos áreas en que queremos mejorar.
