1 From the Desk of Fr. Bloom Last week I asked you to join me in praying for an end to domestic violence. Specifically I invited you to make the third Tuesday of each month a day of prayer and fasting for that intention. I encouraged you to read When I Call For Help: A Pastoral Response to Domestic Violence Against Women. You can find that document by going to the website of the U.S. Bishops. Our bishops give some specific counsel for abused women: Begin to believe that you are not alone and that help is available for you and your children. Talk in confidence to someone you trust: a relative, friend, parish priest, deacon, religious sister or brother, or lay minister. If you choose to stay in the situation, at least for now, set up a plan of action to ensure your safety. This includes hiding a car key, personal documents, and some money in a safe place and locating somewhere to go in an emergency. Find out about resources in your area that offer help to battered women and their children. The phone book lists numbers to call in your local area. Your diocesan Catholic Charities office or family life office can help. Catholic Charities often has qualified counselors on staff and can provide emergency assistance and other kinds of help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides crisis intervention and referrals to local service providers. Call SAFE (7233) or (TTY). assistance is available at In some communities, cell phones programmed to 911 are made available to abused women. The bishops also direct some words to men who abuse: Admit that the abuse is your problem, not your partner's, and have the manly courage to seek help. Begin to believe that you can change your behavior if you choose to do so. Be willing to reach out for help. Talk to someone you trust who can help you evaluate the situation. Contact Catholic Charities or other church or community agencies for the name of a program for abusers. Keep in mind that the Church is available to help you. Part of the mission Jesus entrusted to us is to offer healing when it is needed. Contact your parish. Find alternative ways to act when you become frustrated or angry. Talk to other men who have overcome abusive behavior. Find out what they did and how they did it. Please take the opportunity to read the entire document and make this a focus of prayer. Speaking of our bishops this is a good weekend to remember that Jesus has given us our bishops as successors of the apostles. In our Gospel we hear about the particular role of the Apostle St. Peter as the first among the apostles. Here is a summary from the Catechism: The Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock. 400 "The office of binding and loosing which was given to Peter was also assigned to the college of apostles united to its head." 401 This pastoral office of Peter and the other apostles belongs to the Church's very foundation and is continued by the bishops under the primacy of the Pope. For my homily this weekend I will speak about one of the successor of Peter: Pope St. Callistus. Here is something about his remarkable life: He was a Christian slave of Carpophorus of the imperial Roman household. His master entrusted him with a large sum of money to open a bank. This bank made several loans to people who refused to pay the money back and so it went bankrupt. Knowing that he would be personally blamed and punished Callistus fled from Rome. He was eventually caught, returned to his master and sentenced to work in the tin mines. By a quirk of Roman law, the ownership of Callistus was transferred from this master to the Roman state. He and a number of other Christians were ransomed out of their sentences and he became a free man. He was granted a small monthly allowance and ordered to live out his life in Antium. Many years later Callistus was recalled back to Rome by Pope Saint Zephyrinus. He was put in charge of the clergy and the Roman public burial ground along the Appian Way, which is still called the Cemetery of Saint Callistus today. Pope Zephyrinus ordained Callistus as a deacon and made him his friend and advisor. After the death of Pope Zephyrinus, Callistus was elected pope around 218. He reigned as Pope for a short period of about three years. He died a martyr s death around 223. Most of what we know of Pope Callistus I came from his bitter enemies. The stories of his life and life s work were told by those who hated him and what he stood for. One of his opponents was a man named Hippolytus a highly educated man who thought that he rightfully should have been elected as pope and who set himself up as the first antipope. I will tell you more about Hippolytus next week. He is the patron saint of the envious. 1

Kathleen King Read: Matthew 14:22-33 Gospel Summary A storm arose on the sea and the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water toward them. At first they thought it was a ghost, but then they recognized Jesus. In an effort to show his great faith, Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. Peter was focused and walked toward Jesus. All went well until he looked at the storm. The same is true for us. If we stay focused on Jesus, we will be strong. It s when we get distracted by adversity that we begin to sink. Reflection for Families Parents certainly know there are many stormy times in trying to raise children. As we fall into bed exhausted at night, we may realize that we focused on the storms instead of Jesus loving presence. Take a few minutes today to think about where Jesus tired to break in. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Make a conscious effort to avoid distractions sometime this week. Pick a time when you can all be together in a peaceful setting, maybe a walk or a hike, a picnic or watch a sunset. In your time together share the storms you faced this week and offer one another a peaceful gesture or words of support. 2

5 AUGUST 24, 2014 GENERATIONS OF FAITH Summer Edition Household Faith Formation The Church needs to assist families across the entire life cycle especially parents to create a pattern of family or household faith sharing and a Catholic way of life that is integral to home life. Since the beginnings of the Church, the Catholic faith was transmitted from generation to generation at home through stories, traditions, rituals, practices, and participation in the larger faith community. The family is the domestic church. The Generations of Faith approach involves the whole family (from children through grandparents) in parish faith formation and equips parents with the knowledge and skills for sharing faith at home. At each intergeneration catechetical program, families have the opportunity to learn together. Families also receive a home kit that extends and expands their learning from the parish into their home life. The kit provides activities and resources to help families celebrate customs and rituals, continue their learning, pray together, serve others and enrich their relationships and family life. in every Christian family the different aspects and functions of the life of the entire Church may be reflected: mission, catechesis, witness, prayer, etc. Indeed in the same way as the Church, the family is a place in which the Gospel is transmitted and from which it extends. The family as a locus of catechesis has a unique privilege: transmitting the Gospel by rooting it in the context of profound human values. It is, indeed, a Christian education more witnessed to than taught, more occasional than systematic, more ongoing and daily than structured into periods. 6 POPE FRANCIS Prayer Intentions for AUGUST 2014 Refugees. That refugees, forced by violence to abandon their homes, may find a generous welcome and the protection of their rights. AUGUST 24, 2014 St. Mary of the Valley P A R I S H Oceania. That Christians in Oceania may joyfully announce the faith to all the people of that region. Last weekend you heard Lara, a SVdP member, asking for you to consider becoming a member of this much needed group. We help people out in the Monroe area all the way up the Hwy 2 corridor to Skykomish. We have seen so many people who have many different needs. Once we had a person call because she said her young-adult son needed a bed. When we went out to the home and met her son, he was delightful but had some mental illness issues and needed to have structure. Because his mattress was well worn and did not fare well in the move they had recently had to make, and the change in his environment, his mental illness was taking a toll. We were able to provide him a new bed and that helped to calm him. It s the assistance such as this we do with your donations, your help!! We are able to do this much needed work because of you. When you make your donation, please know that we put it to good use! And we are always looking for more volunteers! Thank you for all you do to follow Christ s words, Feed My Sheep. Questions? Cathy Ortiz, SVdP President No time? With all the activities we pack into our daily schedules, sometimes it s a challenge simply to meet our obligations and have time left for sleep or food. We rush and push, hurry and race, getting things done but missing somehow a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. In the crush we have forgotten God, leaving our spirits hungering for His presence, longing for the renewal only He can give. But how can we make time for even one more thing? In today s gospel Jesus leaves his busy ministry and went alone to the mountains to pray. Jesus knew the need for spiritual renewal, the importance of taking time for prayer. And even though the clamors of the world followed Jesus to His quiet place, He was prepared to re-enter the fray after the precious hours He had spent in God s presence. This week may we learn from His blessed example that prayer is a gift to see us through the busy times, instead of waiting till we have time. Need help with your schedule this week? Start with prayer and see what happens. SUMMER SUMMER OFFICE OFFICE HOURS HOURS The hours during The hours the during the Summer will Summer change. will change.
