1 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK / DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR THE VINE AND BRANCHES TOGETHER BEAR FRUIT We, as Christians, cannot grow without attachment to the vine, that is, to Jesus Christ, and we must accept that reality. But that is not enough. We must be willing to be pruned to be open to conversion if we are to bear fruit and bear it abundantly. This pruning frequently occurs in everyday setbacks, sickness, and humbling experiences. The intimacy of the connection between vine and branches cannot be underestimated. It is the very reality that leads to abundant fruit. That intimacy involves a willingness on our part to be attached to the vine. This is often hard for us because we desire freedom and independence, rather than what appears at first sight to be dependence and lack of freedom. To have our very being depend on our attachment to the vine calls for great faith on our part. And yet, this is what is required if we are to bear fruit. The vine is nothing without the branches to bring forth fruit. Yet without the vine, the branches have no life and no existence. The intimacy and attachment of both vine and branches are needed for sweet, abundant, and delicious fruit to be produced. Intimacy involves risk. It requires willingness to be vulnerable and open to the possibility of being changed and influenced by others. It requires constant change, along with a constant, dynamic process of conversion. The language of pruning is appropriate here because pruning is not a one-time event. It is a never ending process for the purpose of bearing fruit that will give life. Intimacy and growth involve continual conversion, continual dying to self so that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. Sincerely, Fr. Héctor Návalo C.M.F. LA VID JUNTO CON SUS RAMAS DAN FRUTOS Nosotros, como cristianos, no podemos crecer sin apego a la vid, es decir, a Jesucristo, y debemos aceptar esta realidad. Pero eso nomás no es suficiente. Si queremos dar frutos y darlos en abundancia, debemos estar dispuestos a dejarnos podar para así estar abiertos a la conversión. Esta poda ocurre frecuentemente en los contratiempos de la vida diaria, en las enfermedades, y malas experiencias. La relación cercana entre la vid y sus ramas no puede ser subestimada. Es la realidad misma que conduce a la producción de abundantes frutos. Esta intimidad implica tener la voluntad de estar unido a la vid; lo que es a menudo difícil para nosotros ya que queremos libertad, e independencia en vez de algo que a primera vista parece ser dependencia y falta de libertad. Tener nuestro propio ser depende de que tan apegados estemos al llamado de la vid que nos exige tener una gran fe. Aún más, esto es lo que se requiere si es que queremos dar frutos. La vid no es nada sin ramas de las que se puedan sacar frutos, Y sin embargo, las ramas no tienen vida y no tienen existencia. La intimidad y apego de ambas: la vid y las ramas, son necesarias para poder producir en abundancia frutos dulces y deliciosos. La intimidad implica un riesgo. Se requiere de voluntad para estar vulnerable y abierto a la posibilidad de ser cambiado e influenciado por otros. Se requiere de un cambio constante, y de un proceso de conversión constante y dinámico. El lenguaje de podar es apropiado en este caso porque podar el césped no es algo que se hace una vez. Es un proceso sin fin que tiene el propósito de dar frutos que darán vida. La intimidad y el crecimiento implican conversión continua, es morir uno mismo continuamente para poder tener vida, y tenerla en abundancia. Sinceramente, Fr. Héctor Návalo

8 PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO DIED IN THE EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL All-powerful God -- who has made human beings in your image and likeness, and has forever engraved our existence with your kindness - - you give life and you take it back. We are like a flower in the field: We blossom with the sun and water and we are gone with the wind, for human life is transient in this world You sow life in all the corners of the earth, and you call us unto your heavenly court. We cry bitterly for our losses. May the sacred memory of the deceased be our light. May our silent invocation, our tears, our undying memory, together with the faithful image of those perished on the mountains in Nepal, accompany us all our days. O God, in your mercy answer us; make it possible for our brothers and sisters who are not with us any more to rest in the celestial peace. May the memories of their lives stay with us may they be a constant blessing and an undying heritage. All-powerful God, Lord of Life and Death, turn our hearts toward those who have perished in the earthquake. May their nostalgic and blessed memory become an incentive to our deeds, today and always.
