3 Page 3 A Gospel reflection by John Bartunek Christ the Lord-We can picture the Lord explaining these coming events almost seeing them unfold in his mind s eye, as the disciples stare at him, hardly daring to believe what he is saying, wondering exactly what he means. He speaks of these future events with a sureness and clarity that we have come to expect, but which must have been alarming if not frightening for his disciples. If we read these words as if we were hearing them for the first time, we can better understand the sense of urgency that the first Christians had about spreading the gospel. The Lord is speaking about the end as if it s right around the corner, which it is-if not the end of history, at least the end of each of our lives-and he wants his followers to live with that in mind. This is no casual observation; our Lord tells us, I have forewarned you of everything As his faithful followers we know all we need to know about the future-more than enough to keep us focused, balanced and purposeful in the present. -John Bartunek, Author of The Better Apart Advent starts, Sunday December 2nd- Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). 5 Page 5 Please remember to join us for St. Joseph Parish s response and action to the corruption in our Church Prayer The Holy Rosary will be recited at St. Joseph at 7:00pm, every day of the week beginning September 8 th thru December 8 th. Fasting We ask you to join us in fasting every Friday and Wednesday if possible. Consecration to Mary In preparation to consecrate ourselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We will be giving everyone a guide outlining the process. Your personal consecration will start on November 5 th and culminate on December 8 th (The Immaculate Conception). We will also be consecrating St. Joseph Parish to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on December 8 th. The scapular The brown scapular is a powerful devotion to Mary, it is a constant silent prayer. Habla de estos eventos futuros con certeza y claridad que hemos estado esperar, sino que debe haber sido alarmante para sus discípulos. Si leemos estas palabras como si las estuviéramos escuchando por primera vez, podemos comprender mejor el sentido de urgencia que los primeros Cristianos habían de difundir el Evangelio. El Señor está hablando sobre el final como si estuviera a la vuelta de la esquina, que es-si no el fin de la historia, al menos el final de cada una de nuestras vidas- y él quiere que sus seguidores vivan con esto en su mente. Esto no es una observación casual; nuestro Señor nos dice, "He prevenido de todo esto." Our Parish Advent Mission Retreat celebrates, in a joyful way, what it means to have Jesus walk with us in all the affairs of our everyday lives. We will take our inspiration from the Gospel of St. Luke paying close attention to the Birth of Jesus proclaimed in Luke 1 and 2.
