1 Principal: Scott Hilgenberg From The Desk Of The Principal The students have just completed their sixth week of school and should have given you their Interim Reports to sign and return. After talking with the teachers and students about their interim grades and course requirements, I see an obvious correlation of students who are performing in class and those who are not. The key to success at Buchanan is having (1) student participation in class, (2) completion of class work and (3) homework, as well as (4) respect students and adults. If the students can do these four simple tasks and give their best, we would not have a single failure for the school year. A very important reminder to all sixth, seventh and eighth grade parents regarding the promotion requirements, which are based on the new Sunshine State Standards: the new legislation requires all students to earn three (3) units/credits in each of the four core classes that include Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies during their three years in middle school. This will require earning at least two (2) quality points in each course for each semester. This is just the minimum requirement. My expectations are for students to earn more than just the minimum, as well as reach their fullest potential in education this year. One of the ways we will support our students is through The Official Newsletter of Buchanan Middle School - October 1, 2014 Buchanan Middle School Buccaneer Beat 1001 W. Bearss Avenue Tampa, FL (813) A Hillsborough County Public School Assistant Principals: Lucy White, Patrick Crews our ELP program. Our ELP program will begin October 14 th and run through October 30 th. The first round of ELP will consist of Math, Reading and Science Tutorials. ELP will run Tuesday through Thursday from 4:20 p.m. 5:45 p.m. If your child rides a bus to and from school, transportation will be provided. If you see or feel that your child is having trouble in any of their core classes, please contact your child s guidance counselor and we can arrange a tutorial program for him/her. A very important date to remember for next month is November 20 th. That is the Great American Teach-In and we are looking for a few parents to assist in helping us organize this event. If you feel this task is too large, would you consider getting involved by spending a few hours with the students on this day and give them an opportunity to hear what you do for a living? For more information, about this great day, please call school at and ask for Ms. Conforte, 6 th grade Reading or Ms Shafer, Buchanan s Media Specialist. Before I close, I want to thank you all for the support you have given regarding the mandatory uniforms. The students look great and it shows behaviorally inside and outside the classroom. Please keep the middle lane clear for exiting traffic. Do not leave a large gap between you and the car in front of you. This will allow other cars the opportunity to pull up and will not cause a back up at the school driveway entrance on Bearss Avenue. If you are traveling from the east and you can not get into the driveway, you must keep going as to not block traffic. You could go to the first or second left turn lane and make a U turn and then enter the driveway from the opposite direction. When leaving the parent pick up line in the front of the school on Bearss Avenue all cars must turn right per the right turn only sign posted at the exit. If you need to go east, you can go to the first or second left turn lane, make a U turn and then proceed east. Media Center News Media Center staff would like to thank everyone who supported our book fair in August. Another one is coming the first week in December...just in time for holiday reading. Proceeds of the book fair will help to pay for an author visit in March with Adrian Fogelin. Parents are welcome to stop in to the media center to check out the fair at any time. Just sign in in the Main Office first. See you in December! Buchanan collects Boxtops for Education and Labels for Education to make purchases that will benefit the entire school. Please turn them in at the main office.
3 The Guidance Department would like to welcome all of our students back to school. This year we are leading a Character Building Initiative and each week students will have the chance to win a prize for their displays of positive character traits. In addition, October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Watch for announcements for special activities to help spread the message. Classroom visits by the Guidance Counselors are being conducted to discuss promotion requirements and to assist with transitioning to the new school year. 6 th Grade students were given a personal Quality Point Journal to track their progress throughout the year. Parents should contact their student s grade level Counselor with questions concerning student academic performance. The Tutor A Bull Program is returning to Buchanan. Permission slips have been sent home with students who have been invited to participate in the tutoring program that is a partnership with USF. If you have received a permission slip, please return it immediately. Contact Ms. Nickels for more information.
