1 Parrot in the oven Mi vida By Victor Martinez NYC, NY. Harper Collins Publ INSTRUCTIONAL ROUTINE: FOUND IN TRANSLATION Grade: 7 CONTEXT This routine is to be used after reading the intense chapter, The Bullet to help the students gain perspective on how the mom might be feeling. After imagining something so realistically horrific, students may need some time to process what has happened and how they are feeling. This routine is a good way to maintain the severity of the content so it can have its full effect, while lightening the mood a little with music and giving space for students to think. PURPOSE This instructional routine is a multimedia presentation designed to emphasize the themes found in chapter 4 as well as teach students literary terms found in the novel through the medium of a song written in English and spanish. Setting, simile, metaphor, conflict, etc. will all be addressed in this routine and later revisited in other routines. MATERIALS NEEDED Overhead/projector Laminate/ document of lyrics (see below) Time: 20 min. DIRECTIONS Step 1: Ask Students if they know who Enrique Iglesias. You may want to show a photo from the internet, then explain that Iglesias is a Spanish-American singer and song writer who releases music in English and Spanish. Explain that we will be listening to one of his songs in English and Spanish, but visualizing Manny s mom as the one singing the songs. Step 2: Post the lyrics on the overhead/projector screen. Play the music for the song in English. Then put up the Spanish lyrics and play it in Spanish. Step 3: Have students pair share to answer these questions: Do you like this song? Why or why not?

2 How does this song make you feel? What s the tone/mood? What is happening in this song? How does this song relate to Manny s mom? Find 2 examples of how Do You Know and The Bullet are similar. Step 4: Discuss as a class the students answers. Step 5: Explain what setting is and how this song contributes to the setting. Have students write down the definition you give. Ask students what words in the song contribute to building the setting. Have them write down the example or one of their own. Step 6: Explain conflict. Ask students what the conflict is and who it is between in the song, then in the chapter. Have students write the definition of conflict on their handout. Then help them find an example from the song that talks about the conflict and have them write it on their handout. Step 7: Explain Metaphor. Have students write down the definition. Show them an example from the text ( I saw ice freeze around Dad s eyes. p. 65) Step 8: Explain simile. Have students write down the definition. Show them an example in the chapter ( p. 60 an engine that wound and gathered like a powerful animal. ) Step 9: Define dialogue. Show students an example of dialogue from the chapter (p , are good examples but there is dialogue throughout the whole chapter). Let students find their own example. Step 10 Ask for a few students to share the examples they found. ASSESSMENT Students will show their comprehension of the literary terms by finding their own examples of each of the literary terms. When students turn in their worksheets make sure that the examples given match the literary term.
