1 EMALCA ECUADOR 2010 FINAL REPORT ECUADORIAN MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY (SEDEM) The EMALCA Ecuador 2010 took place from October 18th to October 30th at the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Quito, Ecuador. This was the first EMALCA organized in Ecuador and it was primarily addressed to math students from the whole country, from the northern of Peru, and from the southern of Colombia. The Ecuadorian Mathematical Society (SEdeM) and the Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) shared the responsibility for the local organization of the event. From a total of 141 applications, 24 foreign students and 27 Ecuadorian students were accepted to the school. These students came from universities in Lima, Huaraz, Trujillo, Tumbes, Piura, Guayaquil, Quito, San Juan de Pasto, Medellín, Bogotá, and El Salvador. Thanks to funding from CIMPA, it was possible to offer scholarships for covering travel costs and food expenses for the students coming outside from Quito. Moreover, the Ecuadorian National Secretary for Science and Technology (Senacyt) assumed their accommodation costs in a hostel. Four courses and five two-session talks were offered during the school. The invited professors came from universities in Chile, Brazil and Mexico. Their participation was made possible through the support of several institutions from their home countries which paid the transportation costs. The EPN covered their hotel accommodation costs. As a local counterpart, one professor of EPN also participated in the academic program with a conference. Each course lasted one week (six sessions) and was followed by an evaluation. Course material was handed out to the participants both in printed and in electronic form. The material is also generally available through the web page of the event: In addition to the academic activities, a cultural event and a social dinner were programmed at the end of the first week and on the last day of the school, respectively. From the first opinions expressed by both professors and students, the overall balance of the school is positive. A second EMALCA in Ecuador is expected to take place in Courses and talks The following courses were taught at the school, each one consisting of six one and a half hour sessions plus a written evaluation:

On October 28th a representative of the Schlumberger Foundation presented to the participants of the school the fellowship

On October 30th, the last day of the school, a dinner was offered to all the participants. Typical dishes from the Ecuadorian kitchen were served. All values are given in US dollars, which is the currency circulating in Ecuador. Initially, only land transportation costs were considered. However, some students coming from distant cities asked for the possibility of a partial financing of airplane tickets. In these cases we paid the amount of the land fare and the students covered the difference. The student coming from El Salvador received partial support for his plane ticket in an amount equivalent to the amount spent for each student coming from Bogotá (the second farthest city). Scholarships. Each student coming from outside of Quito was granted a scholarship of 105 USD to cover his/her food and living expenses in Quito during the 14 days of duration of the EMALCA. (Students from Quito were granted a scholarship of 25 USD per person, financed with funds from SEdeM.) Course materials. Each school participant received a bag with course materials like booklets, workbooks, an information CD, talk slides, etc. Funding from CIMPA was used to partially cover the preparation of printed material. In order to save costs, an agreement was signed with the Faculty of Sciences of the EPN,

5 EMALCA ECUADOR 2010 FINAL REPORT 5 according to which most of the material was printed in the university press in exchange for the purchase of some quantity of paper and an ink cartridge. Social dinner. On the last day of the school, all participants were invited to a dinner at a local restaurant, where typical dishes from the Ecuadorian kitchen were served. Until now we have received from CIMPA two money transfers, as indicated in the following table: Date Amount (USD) Amount (EUR) 28-Sep , , Oct TOTAL 3, , The remaining amount that we kindly ask CIMPA to transfer is USD 2, This is equivalent to 1, EUR at the current exchange rate. Thus, the total expenses paid with funding from CIMPA would add up to 4, EUR, which is within the approved frame of 4,750 EUR. The original bills regarding all expenses for which we have used CIM- PA funding, as well as a copy of the agreement with the Faculty of Science of EPN for the printing of material, are attached.
