1 From the editor Dear members, To be alive and feeling free And to have everyone in your family To be alive in every way Oh how great it is To be alive Every day is a new day. Something else to do The dawn of life is upon us So let the gladness ring though Whenever we sang this song at morning assembly, the air would be electric. We would drum on the chairs, sing loudly and grin. We would leave the assembly hall running and skipping, happy and excited to start the day! I recently asked a colleague to recite the words of the song and immediately she started bopping her head and singing To be alive. I called my sister and another friend to verify the words, with the same results - giggles and joy. Can you imagine what it would be like as facilitators to find the tool or the technique that brings your group to life and makes the discussion lively? Can you imagine a room filled with positive energy even when there is dissent? The liveliness does not always have to be animated. It can be a deep seated satisfaction that we carry with us when we are done. As kids we would leave assembly, happy, pensive and hopeful after singing the Jimmy Nash s classic: I can see clearly now, the rain is gone, I can see all obstacles in my way Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day. In this issue Carol Hamilton shares with us some opportunities for the creation of that liveliness, while Craig Freshley gives us tips to create enthusiasm in groups. 2 The Facilitator s LIFE [Carol-Ann Hamilton ] Is each day a whirlwind? Do countless competing demands rule your calendar? It wouldn t be surprising to hear that you put groups, colleagues, friends and family first. Rendering you last To facilitate means to make easy or less difficult or more easily achieved (Oxford English Reference Dictionary). This begs the question What are we as facilitators doing to smooth our own lives? Are You Alive or Lively? Those of us who are inspired by a mission or cause tend to assume that multi-tasking will enable us to endlessly juggle myriad responsibilities without personal consequence. Not true! We must instead practice extreme self-care. Does this sound self-indulgent? If so, remember the airline adage to don your oxygen mask during crisis, before you assist others. For us, the emergency is our sustained ability to perform our important contributions. This brings us to the key distinction between Liveliness which refers to vigorous and energetic and Aliveness which encompasses living, not dead. Do you choose to be merely alive or full of life? If you want lively, step off your crazy busy treadmill and reflect on what s really important, now! There is only one journey; going inside. Rainer Maria Rilke s proposes. Here are some encouragements that I offer at wellness conferences, team-building retreats and personal growth workshops: Examine your thoughts. You have 60,000 thoughts per day. Be watchful. You literally create your reality. Name what blocks you. Is fear or doubt a familiar companion? Get beneath how you sabotage success and heal your wounded recesses. CAROL-ANN HAMILTON. Inspiration Coach to leaders worldwide in transforming workplaces by maximizing people potential while attaining bottom-line prosperity. Carol-Ann has recently published Step Out of Your Sandbox! on how to get unstuck from unproductive comfort zones into the life of your dreams. Identify daily energizers. Brainstorm enhancing activities in two, five, fifteen and half-hour increments. Pinpoint tolerations (energy drains in your environment, work, relationships, finances, etc). Vow to eliminate them. Notice how your inner wisdom responds to these invitations to summon connection to your deeper calling: I am most myself when... My mission needs the quality of from me... I would like to change in the world... The Call to Action Up to three years ago, I was seriously joy-challenged, the last person who should teach let go and lighten up For me, Buckminster Fuller s term, precession -a series of small steps leading to an astonishing, unforeseen conclusion - made perfect sense Uncovering your liveliness isn t an overnight phenomenon. Across 52 years so far, my expansion has been measured by my courageous willingness to uproot beliefs and attitudes which no longer support my higher purpose. Such scouring isn t easy but it is always worthwhile. In closing, let me ask: Why do you continue your work? Without knowing you (yet), I gather facilitation expresses part of Who You Really Are. You re undoubtedly a guiding light who invokes transformation through personal example. To support your passionate bravery, William Barkley writes: There are two great days in a person s life when we are born and we discover why. Joseph Campbell adds: When you follow your bliss, doors will open where you would not have thought there were doors. No sería sorprendente escuchar que has priorizado a grupos, colegas, amistades y familia. Comprométete a eliminarlos. 3 October - November BACK TO THE FUTURE [IACE, Catalina Quiroz Niño & Luz Marina Aponte Gálvez ] Institute of Cultural Affairs, Spain (IACE) offers facilitation for geographically dispersed organisations, using video conferencing. The Institute of Cultural Affairs, Spain ( IACE initials in Spanish) has used video conferencing with worldwide religious groups to promote a greater participation in strategic and action planning processes; and in the sharing of working practices across continents. ICA s Technology of Participation (ToP) methodologies, such as the Focused Conversation Method, were used to facilitate participation offered by new technologies. ICA Spain, together with its social enterprise partner, Empower started working with The Oblata Sisters of the Holy Redeemer who work with women in prostitution in 5 continents. They recognised that the phenomenon of prostitution had become globalised and required new responses. This meant ensuring the participation of Sisters and lay people in policy decisionmaking, which required a change in their organisational structure to one in which power was shared more horizontally. ICA Spain worked with them to design and facilitate their new strategy. This was started by a face to face participatory strategic planning session, followed by a series of virtual meetings using video conferencing technology. Virtual working teams were created spanning a variety of countries. Facilitative leadership processes were used to create a new global identity and enhance relationships between the Sisters, with the challenge of physical distances overcome by virtual meetings. One outcome was the launching of a network called INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF GENDER AND SOLIDARITY. Its mission is: The search for new and effective responses to the situation of women within prostitution, in a globalised world, through strategic thinking and working. It is based in the experience of the Oblatas Mission projects and aims to establish a continuing information, knowledge and experience exchange globally. ICA Spain/Empower supported the network s strategic process, which is based on the systematization of their experiences and the development of virtual and face-to-face working styles. The experience started in 2005 and it is still alive - in several languages. The Oblatas 1st Global Virtual Encounter in 2006 was facilitated by ICA Spain/Empower. 10 countries were represented from three continents: Africa, America and Europe, and over 120 people attended and participated. Ages of participants ranged from 18 to 78 years old. In 2008 and 2010 the network launched a worldwide virtual campaign against the trafficking of women in the last two major football events (Germany and S. Africa). Each campaign had over 900 supporters and raised awareness of the phenomenon. In June 2010, the Oblatas held their first international projects forum. Communities from 5 continents interchanged outcomes, new challenges and planned how to work collectively. This time ICA Spain & Empower were a privileged silent witnesses of how the group has empowered itself to maximise the use of web 2.0 technology and a facilitative leadership approach for nurturing their global community. Luz Marina Aponte Gálvez Catalina Quiroz Niño INTERVIEW WITH Craig Freshley Craig Freshley is enthusiastic and encouraging. He eagerly shared his new book The Wisdom of Group Decisions, (a hundred principles and practical tips for collaboration), with the Latin and Caribbean IAF Newsletter. MA: What prompted you to write this book? CF: Facilitation is just a topic that I love. I studied political science in college and public policy in grad school and I have been fascinated and dismayed by how society makes bad decisions. I have been taking note of how we can make better decisions. MA: Who will benefit from reading the book? CF: Anyone who is part of a group that makes decisions together boards of directors, legislative bodies, town councils, and federal government agencies. MA: What do you hope to achieve with the book? There are very practical tips in the book on making better decisions. It is a reference book, if you have a problem or if the group is stuck, you can use the book. There is a good index, as well as a very good topic index. The book is organized so that anyone can find a solution to any group problem. MA: Is there a next book in the works? CF: I have written a longer and much larger book, I have not yet found a publisher. While this book has 100 of my tips, I write new ones each week. I have a total of 140 new tips since I wrote the book. And you can visit the website and get free tips. MA: This newsletter focuses on enthusiasm. Can you share an example from your book? CF: One of my basic principles is that people s attitude really matters. Many groups do the decision making process well, but they get stuck making poor decisions. I think the reason for this is the attitude that is brought to the decision making process. Among the 100 tips, a lot of them are about the attitude. Being enthusiastic is about attitude. One of the tips is Good in everyone. It asks us to come to a meeting assuming the best in each person even in our adversaries. Another exercise is called More wagging less barking. It s an analogy using dogs. Dogs when they are happy or pleased with us approach people wagging. The tip tells us to approach people wagging. Let your optimism and enthusiasm show. MA: Is there anything else that you would like to comment on. CF: Making good peaceful decisions is hard work. It is harder to make peace than war. The book presents the basic principles for making peace, but we have to do this. I will commend anyone who makes peaceful decisions, and facilitators are at the front line of making peace. 4 The Importance of RECOGNITION Beatrice Briggs [Beatrice Briggs, founding director of the International Institute for Facilitationand Consensus (IIFAC), is a consultant and trainer who helps groups aroundthe world to work together for positive change. A native of the United Stateswho has lived in Mexico since 1998, Beatrice can be reached ] Most groups claim that they want to treat each other with respect. One simple way to translate that intention into reality is to make a habit of giving each person a few moments to be formally welcomed before diving into the real business of the meeting. The introduction to The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook, companion volume to Peter Senge's classic book on learning organization, The Fifth Discipline, begins with an explanation of the expression Sawu bona, meaning I see you, used by the tribes of northern Natal in South Africa to greet one another. The response is usually Sikhona, meaning I am here. The authors go on to explain, The order of the exchange is important: until you see me, I do not exist. It's as if, when you see me, you bring me into existence. This ritual of greeting you see me, you bring me into existence. This ritual of greeting forms part of a larger concept, ubuntu, that pervades the cultures of sub-saharan Africa. The spirit of ubuntu includes the idea that A person is a person because of other people. I have long insisted on the importance of a round of introductions at the beginning of every meeting, precisely to permit each participant the opportunity to become visible to the rest of the group. Depending on the circumstances, I use a variety of strategies for this ritual of greeting, but the underlying idea is to respectfully recognize the presence of each person. For the timid, newcomers to the group, or others who for whatever reason are unlikely to speak much during the meeting, this may be the only moment that the group can say the equivalent of we see you and they can reply I am here Beatrice La mayoría de los grupos afirma que desean tratarse unos a otros con respeto.

The workshop discussed relevant issues for the sustainable development of Small Island Development States and the country tailored monitoring opportunities that create feasible methods to track progress. The Workshop on the Poverty Reduction programme of support delivered by UNDP which aimed to: Assess country progress to date on MDG monitoring ahead of the United Nations High Level Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) September, 2010 in New York and consider feedback from countries on challenges and potential areas of support. Present the MDG and Poverty Monitoring Toolkit and receive critical inputs for its finalisation. Continue to strengthen the critical mass of Caribbean development practitioners (government officials and civil society champions) with the commitment to advocate for and implement strategic approaches, tactical choices and tailored solutions for poverty and sustainable human development monitoring systems within an MDG framework. The workshop introduced a new approach for countrytailored monitoring with new concepts and paradigm shifts that require cultural advances. Participants asked for support on gaining commitment and garnering support amongst stakeholders and governments. The Toolkit and workshop a invited Caribbean development thinkers and practitioners to facilitate multi-sectoral stakeholder processes to create country tailored monitoring systems. At the conclusion of the workshop the participants completed a wish upon a star dynamic. The facilitation team and clients gained perspective, that a comprehensive and country-tailored monitoring system. Tremenda tarea no será fácil. Project: WORLD HUG DAY by Hans Gutiérrez (Perú) WORLD HUG DAY is an idea put forward by DH FACILITATORS of Peru to sensitize to the world through a simple gesture of love: THE HUG. On Sunday October17 thousands of volunteers in diverse cities of Peru and Latin America will take to the street to give hugs between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm in main plazas and public avenues. At 12 noon that day there will be happy moments when we will unite through hugs. WORLD HUG DAY will generate a voluntary movement of inhabitants of cities of the world to give and receive hugs during that day to renew the confidence in the humanity, generate solidarity and to favor gestures that facilitate the development of the people. Tremendous work will not be easy. Nevertheless, we trust the proposal to emotionally invade Peru and Latin America, in order then to spread to the other continents. This Project is free and creatively adheres to the following: To position the concept in the mind of people (Campaign in Peru and Latin America in 2010) That a large quantity of cities unite though hugs as the campaign spreads from Latin America to North America, Europe and Africa in 2010) Request that the United Nations officially recognizes WORLD HUG DAY In spite of limitations we trust in the transforming power of humanity, capable through transmission to all possible media that globalization offers to us, the message: "On the third Sunday of October: It gives us a HUG. HAPPY WORLD DAY OF THE HUG!" PG 06 IAF Latin America and the Caribbean
