2 WELCOME BIENVENUE Welcome to the 2015 Conference of the Americas! This conference is packed with opportunities for you to learn, grow and connect. You ll hear stellar keynote speakers and participate in workshops led by people who know exactly what kinds of challenges you face. Our keynote speaker lineup includes Sir Ken Robinson, an author on creativity and innovation in schools. His 2006 Ted talk is the most-viewed ever. Also speaking will be Paul Tough, contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine and author. Paul argues against test scores as the sole indicator of value in our education. Another keynote speaker, Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón, who will deliver his talk in Spanish, is a mathematician and professor at the University of Rioja in Spain. He is a member of the Big Van Theory group of scientific comedians and has been a great storyteller for more than twenty years. We have a diverse and exciting program this year! This year, we re offering you something new. Right before the conference formally begins at 17:30 on Thursday 23 July, we ve scheduled meetups organized by programme. What a great way to network with your colleagues from more than 40 countries! I am delighted that this conference is happening in the fascinating city of Chicago. While you re probably well aware of the city s outstanding universities, did you also know that it has 43 authorized IB schools? Escuchará a oradores destacados excelentes y participará en talleres impartidos por personas que saben exactamente a qué tipos de desafíos se enfrenta. En nuestra lista de oradores destacados figura sir Ken Robinson, autor de libros sobre la creatividad y la innovación dentro del campo de la educación. La charla de TED que realizó en 2006 es la más vista de la historia. También estará entre los oradores Paul Tough, autor de libros y colaborador del New York Times Magazine. Paul sostiene que las calificaciones obtenidas en exámenes no deben ser el único indicador de valor en nuestro sistema educativo. Otro orador destacado, Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón, quien realizará su charla en español, es matemático y profesor de la Universidad de La Rioja, en España. Para este año tenemos un programa interesante y diverso. Es una oportunidad estupenda para ponerse en contacto con colegas procedentes de más de 40 países de todo el mundo. If the answer is no to all six questions below, chances are very good that the assignment has not leveraged the power of technology. 1. Educating the whole child for whole school improvement Michigan Donna Manager of Whole Child Implementation, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Alexandria, Virginia, United States Donna Snyder will discuss the Whole Child approach to systemic quality school improvement via a whole child approach. Since its beginning, IB has always insisted on the importance of a holistic education that meets the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of our students. For the past decade, ASCD s Whole Child initiative has shown a bright light on that need, which is sometimes lost in the storm of standardized testing and school accountability. ASCD has a wealth of knowledge to share on how this approach can work in school settings and where each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and participation in a global environment. Learn how schools can move beyond a vision for educating the whole child to specific actions that result in learners who are knowledgeable, emotionally and physically healthy, civically active, artistically engaged, prepared for economic self-sufficiency, and ready for the world beyond formal schooling. The presentation includes a demonstration of ASCD s free School Improvement Tool which can help schools and districts conduct a simple needs assessment and provide next steps in their improvement process. Provoking discussion through self-review, reflection and inquiry This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to delve into the IB guide to inclusive education. Paul proposes that the popular belief that intelligence, endlessly measured by test scores, is the sole indicator of value in our education system is just not true. Paul argues that noncognitive skills or, character are better indicators of success: curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, self-control, and grit. Through the case study of the Harlem Children s Zone, Tough describes the inspiring struggle to establish a way to combat poverty that could be replicated nationwide. Tough has also contributed to This American Life and The New Yorker, where he has honed his focus upon education, poverty, parenting, and politics. An award-winning author and storyteller, Deedy is also an accomplished lecturer, having been a guest speaker for the TED Conference, the Library of Congress and Columbia University. She is also the host of the four-time Emmy-winning children s program Love That Book! Currently, Carmen has two new books in the works; a picture book with Scholastic Publishers entitled The Noisy Little Rooster, and a Young Adult novel from Peachtree Publishers called The Book of Unintended Consequences. Most importantly, Deedy spends much of the year traveling across North America and the Caribbean performing for children. They remain, unapologetically, her favorite audiences. Carmen Agra Deedy est réputée pour ses livres pour enfants, parmi lesquels on peut citer The Library Dragon, Martina the Beautiful Cockroach et 14 Cows for America, ce dernier étant classé dans les meilleures ventes du New York Times. He is a mathematician, and a lecturer in computer languages and systems at the University of La Rioja. Winner of the FameLab Spain competition 2013, presenter at TEDx Río la Plata 2014 and TEDx Río de la Plata Education 2015, he presents the Derivando channel on YouTube, dedicated to mathematics. He is a member of the Big Van Theory group of scientific comedians: scientists on wheels. He has been a storyteller for more than twenty years. Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón (Logrogne, Espagne, 1972). Diplômé en théologie et en mathématiques, et docteur ès mathématiques de l Université de La Rioja (2008). Mathématicien, il enseigne dans le département Langues et Systèmes Informatiques de l Université de La Rioja et concentre ses recherches sur le calcul formel, l algèbre commutative et leurs applications. Il propose des activités de vulgarisation des mathématiques à travers des exposés, des ateliers et des discours scientifiques. Il a remporté le concours FameLab España 2013 et est intervenu en tant que conférencier à la TEDx Río de la Plata (éditions 2014 et 2015, cette dernière intégralement consacrée à l éducation). Il est présentateur de Derivando, la chaîne Youtube dédiée aux mathématiques et fait partie du groupe de comiques scientifiques The Big Van Theory: científicos sobre ruedas.
