I wuld like t extend a huge thank yu and cngratulatins t the cast and crew f The Music Man, recently perfrmed at the Memrial High Schl auditrium. Many students, alng with their fearless directrs, Mr. Rpa and Ms. Lazrik, wrked incredibly hard t create such a wnderful prductin. Additinally, cuntless ther staff members and vlunteers als dedicated time ensuring a fabulus perfrmance. The musical was such an unbelievable undertaking with such wnderful results! Kuds t these truly dedicated prfessinals and all f ur student thespians. During the mnths f March and April, thrugh ur Psitive Behaviral Supprts prgram, we cntinue t talk abut what it lks like t Respect Everyne, Respect Educatin and Respect the Envirnment in the classrm. We acknwledge the respectful behavirs with gtchas. The gtchas can be submitted fr mnthly pizza drawings r can be used t buy things in the Gtcha Shp. Additinally, we are excited t celebrate ur final Fun Day n April 19. We lve spending time celebrating with ur students wh cnsistently make gd chices. Keep up the gd wrk, Spring Harbr students! Third quarter reprt cards will be cming hme shrtly; if yu d nt receive a reprt card in the mail, please check Infinite Campus. We have seen many imprvements, but cntinue t strive fr success with the MMSD prmtin plicy, students in the eighth grade must maintain a 1.67 grade pint average in all fur cre cntent areas (scial studies, math, language arts, science) r scre a well n the WKCE standardized test in the respective cre cntent where they are deficient. Parents will receive a letter indicating that these criteria were nt met, thse students shuld plan t attend summer schl. There are a few imprtant dates t put n yur calendar in the upcming weeks. On May 29 at 6:00 p.m., we welcme incming sixth grade students and their parents fr rientatin. The annual Envirnmental Cnference will be held n May 2 (with envirnmental field trips all day n May 3) and the first Springathn turn in day is May 3. On May 10, we will take ur all schl picture. Please cnsult the weekly Ship s Lg fr additinal dates in April and May, it s a very busy time at Spring Harbr! On June 11, we will hld ur eighth grade cmpletin ceremny at the Marrit Htel, fllwed by a student lunchen and dance. June 12 marks ur field trip day, with eighth graders traveling t Mt. Sinceramente, Leia Esser, Ed.D Directra The Music Rm at Spring Harbr has been very busy ver the last mnth r s with varius events such as Sl and Ensemble Festival, Strings Festival, and preparatin fr spring cncerts. District Sl/Ensemble Festival was held at Memrial High Schl n March 9th. Students frm all ver the district frm grades 6-12 invlved in music are eligible t participate. This year s Spring Harbr representatives were: Ryan Treves, Nami Wng, Maddy Peppard, Vernica Prestine, Heidi James, Megan Gale, Timthy Zhang and Aris Awes. Ryan Treves will be ging n t the State Sl and Ensemble Festival n April 27th in Platteville. Cngratulatins t all students n a jb well dne! Saturday, March 16th was Madisn's 47th annual Strings Festival. All Spring Harbr rchestra students have spent the past few mnths preparing fr the perfrmance - i.e. learning the sngs in the packet, memrizing the sngs, and finally "passing ff" all learned sngs. The event was hsted by Memrial High Schl, and was a great success! It was wnderful t see the rchestra students play fr such a large audience. We will nw start preparing fr ur upcming May cncert. 5 SHMS PTSO 8th Annual Springathn 5K run/walk WHAT is the ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? A PTSO spnsred annual event and fundraiser fr SHMS that replaces the tken magazine sale. This event runs fr three weeks in May during which time the students cllect mnetary dnatins frm friends, family, neighbrs, and lcal businesses. Fundraising fr the Springathn is structured similar t a catalg sale withut having t sell anything: Turn in a $15 dnatin n WEEK ONE: get a Springathn t-shirt, ring pp and free ht dg at the event. Turn in a cumulative $60 dnatin n WEEK TWO: get a giant candy bar. Turn in a cumulative $120 dnatin n WEEK THREE: get a chance at the teacher pie tss and a chice f SHMS spirit item (t be determined). Turn in a cumulative $175 dnatin: get a lim ride fr pizza during the schl day. Turn in a cumulative $250 dnatin: get a trip t the Kalahari Water Park in WI Dells, bused frm schl with ther classmates. The last Turn-in Day is als the day f the Springathn event. The event includes a 5K walk/run arund the Spring Harbr neighbrhd (ptinal), fd, fun and talent shw by the students after schl. WHEN is the 2013 ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? The eight annual Springathn kick-ff assembly will be Friday, April 26th, WEEK ONE turn-in day is Friday May 3th, WEEK TWO turn-in day is Friday May 10th, WEEK THREE turn-in day is Friday May17th 2013 and this will be the final day f the fundraiser. The Springathn walk/run and talent shw will be Friday May 17th frm 3:00 5:00 after schl. WHY d we need an ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? Budget Cuts.need I say mre! The dnatins cllected are used fr the much needed resurces and prgrams fr the students and staff. HOW t jin in n the fun and help with the success f the ANNUAL SPRINGATHON? Dnate a really cl prize(s) that yur child wuld be mtivated t win that can be ffered at ne f the prize levels. i.e. gift cards, IPOD Tuch, digital camera, smething unique. 6 Physical Educatin and Athletics There are sme pprtunities fr 7th and 8th grade bys and girls this spring. Starting in April, sccer and sftball will be ffered as after schl interschlastic teams. There will be travel t ther middle schls. Sccer will be played n Wednesdays and Sftball will be played n Thursdays. Pssible Spring Harbr teams depend n hw many students sign up fr each sprt. The sign up sheets fr bth sprts are n Mr. Friedl s ffice dr. Please check yur schedules as students tend t sign up and frget they have ther activities they are cmmitted t. Anther great pprtunity cming fr 8th graders is the Westside Middle Schl Track Meet held during the schl day n Wednesday, May 22. It will be fllwed by the All-City meet n Wednesday, May 29. This is a very fun and exciting event with 8th graders getting a glimpse f a real high schl track meet experience in which they cmpete against ther middle schls in the city. We will discuss, practice and learn abut the different events in physical educatin class. Then the students can decide if they are interested and sign up fr the meet in May. Als, the athletic directr frm Memrial High Schl will cme t Spring Harbr in May fr a meeting with 8th grade students interested in participating in athletics next year in 9th grade. The meeting is immediately after schl in the gym. This infrmative meeting cvers expectatins fr student athletes, physical and insurance requirements, seasns fr the different sprts and answers t student questins abut the Memrial sprts prgrams. We will be finished at 3:30. Hay tra prtunidad buena para ls estudiantes del 8º grad que es el Westside Middle Schl Track Meet que estará entre el día esclar el miércles, 23 de may. Ls estudiantes quienes califican, se participara en el All-City Meet que estará entre el día esclar el miércles, 29 de may. Este event es muy divertid y emcinante y le da la experiencia de estar en un track meet de la escuela preparatria en que tienen una cmpetencia acerca de las tras escuelas secundarias de Madisn. Discutirems, practicárams y aprenderems acerca de ls events diferentes en la clase de educación física para que ls estudiantes puedan decidir si le gustaría participar en algún event en la cmpetición en may. También, el directr atlétic del Prepa Memrial estará aquí en Spring Harbr el martes de may para hablar cn ls estudiantes quienes le gustarían participar en ls atlétics el añ que viene en el grad 9º. La junta estará después de la escuela en el gimnasi. Este junta le da infrmación acerca de la expectacines de un estudiante atlétic, ls requerimients fisics y de seguranza, las estacines para ls deprtes diferentes y cualquier preguntas que tienen ls estudiantes acerca del ls prgramas de deprtes que tiene la Prepa Memrial.
