The Right Way. Y our Primary Care Physician (PCP) is the best person to see if you are sick or need preventive medical care. Your PCP may also refer you to one of our community network specialists when you need more in-depth diagnosis or treatment. In some cases, once you have been seen and evaluated by a community network specialist, that specialist may determine that you need additional care and refer you to Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women s Hospital or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Your referring specialist will need to submit a request for prior authorization to CeltiCare before you begin (or continue) care by a doctor from one of these centers. 2 Two Tests Women Need Cancer screenings can play an important part in keeping you healthy. For women, breast and cervical cancers can often be found earlier with regular testing. When cancer is found early, it can be easier to treat and stop. FOR CERVICAL CANCER Women should have a Pap test within three years of first having sex or by age 21, whichever comes first. After that, testing should occur every one to three years, depending on any risk factors you may have. FOR BREAST CANCER Most women should get their first mammogram by age 50. For some women, testing should start at age 40. If you have risk factors such as a mother, sister or daughter with breast cancer, you may need to be screened earlier or more often. Your screening and testing needs may be different, based on your medical and family history. So, it s important to talk to your doctor about how often you should have these screenings done. Some women don t get cancer screening tests because they are afraid to hear results that might be bad. If you do have abnormal results, it s important to know that early detection can help you get a head start on treatment and increase your chances of becoming cancer-free. With our appeal process, you have the right to receive additional information about the decision. 5 Don t Forget About Your Teeth What does the health of your mouth have to do with the health of your body? A lot. Healthy teeth and gums are good for your whole body. Do your part to help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Follow these tips: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Floss at least once a day. Limit sugar-filled snacks and drinks to help avoid cavities. Visit your dentist once a year. Change your toothbrush every 3 months. When you visit the dentist, your teeth will be cleaned and examined. The dentist will also show you how to take care of your teeth. Are You Ready to Quit? Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health. But it s hard to do. If you are ready to stop using tobacco, talk with your doctor. There are many things that may help you, including medicine. Also, stay away from people who smoke. Go for a walk or wash your hands when you crave a cigarette. Try chewing gum or snacking on carrots to keep your mouth busy. And think about all the good things about quitting. You will feel better. You will spend less money. (You ll even smell better!)
