2 Father Bob Hogan, BBD Associate Liaison Most Rev. Thomas J. Flanagan Liaison for CCCR Everyone is welcome to come to our conference follow-up Night of Renewal on April 5. Come and rejoice with the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple (more information can be found in this newsletter) as we look forward to the consecration of the Archdiocese of San Antonio to the Holy Spirit. We want to encourage our prayer groups, and all the members of our prayer groups, to start praying for the consecration of our archdiocese to the Holy Spirit by Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller on June 7, 2014 at the Vigil of Pentecost Mass. Here is an example of a prayer we can use that has been adapted from some prayers by Fr. Will Combs, BBD. Consecration Prayer to the Holy Spirit Praise to you, Heavenly Father, for sending your Son. Praise to you, Lord Jesus, for sending your Spirit upon the Church and renewing the face of the earth. Come, Holy Spirit. Come from our Father. Come through the intercession of Mary and the saints. Come and fill us with your glory. Come in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Holy Spirit, we totally consecrate ourselves and our archdiocese to you. Release all your gifts and graces upon us so that we may truly be the body of Christ. Holy Spirit, dwell in us so that we may be of one heart consecrated to your love, one mind consecrated to your truth and one body consecrated to your purpose and power. Lord Jesus, baptize us more and more in your Spirit that we may continue your mission of building up your Body, the Church, and evangelizing the world. Holy Spirit, we gather in the upper room with Mary, the mother of our Lord, the apostles and all of your disciples to wait for your coming at Pentecost. Come Holy Spirit, mutual love of the Father and the Son, come in a New Pentecost. Come Divine Advocate, Holy Wind, Breath, Fire, Cloud, Dove and River of Life. Accept our consecration to you and the total gift of our bodies, souls and spirits to be your temple. Forgive us for our sins and fill us with your gifts, graces, fruits, virtues, charisms and armor of light that we may be totally docile to your works of salvation, sanctification and evangelization in us and through us. Empower us to take up our cross daily and follow, live, love, serve, suffer, die and rise with Jesus, the Messiah, the Anointed One. Praise to you, Spirit of the living God. Anoint us, fall a fresh upon us and let your perfect will be done. Enkindle in us the fire of your love, renew our archdiocese, and renew the face of the earth! THANKS: Many thanks to all the people who helped with the conference. Thanks to the many volunteers (registration, bookstore, prayer ministry, etc.). Thanks to the English and Spanish Service Committees. A special thanks for all the work by Norma Alaniz, our office administrator, and Mary Esther Lopez, the conference coordinator. APR 2014-Page 2

3 News from the English Service Commiee By: Karen Adams, Co-Chair Many thanks and kudos to Mary Esther Lopez, our 2014 Conference Coordinator, and all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this year's conference an overwhelming success. Their commitment and dedicated service were essen- al to making this conference one of the best ones yet. Weren t Jesse Romero and, all the speakers, awesome? We hope everyone received a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, praccal ps for exercising the gis of the Spirit, and empowerment to evangelize and live out our Catholic faith. Now that we ve come down from the mountain top down into the valley of everyday life, let s not forget what we learned. Let s keep the fire burning and let it set San Antonio ablaze! As you parcipated in the conference, did you noce the film crew? This year we had the opportunity to have our conference recorded for a brand new charismac television channel hosted by Shalom Media. Shalom TV is a worldwide Chrisan charismac channel with a Catholic point of view. Our conference talks will be broadcast on their staon all over the world. If you missed a talk or had family members or friends who were not able to aend the conference, we'd encourage you to have them tune in to the broadcast when it becomes available. The details will be provided in upcoming Charisleers and on our website. This is an excing opportunity, not only for us, but for others around the world to learn about the charismac renewal and to see how we Praise the Lord in San Antonio! For more informaon about Shalom Media go to: hp:// Finally, I hope all of you are finding joy on your Lenten journey which comes to a close on April 19th. Easter means so much more when we have entered fully into Lent. As we spend more me in prayer, aend daily mass, go on a retreat, walk with Christ during Staons of the Cross, or fast from food or other enjoyments we begin to enter into a deeper communion with the Lord. We can find joy in our Lenten pracces as we divest of the things that drew us away from the Lord and return to our first love, who has been waing paently for us. Let us renew our efforts and encourage one another to see the journey through to the end. As Lent ends we enter into the celebraon of Easter. The tomb is empty. He has risen, Alleluia! Our joy is complete. For this we give thanks and praise to God. From all of us on the Service Commiee, may you and your families have a most blessed and Happy Easter! To help establish or re-establish or deepen a personal relationship with Christ 2. To help yield to the action of the Holy Spirit in our lives 3. To help us be joined to Christ more fully by becoming part of the community 4. He encourages the Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal and all Charismatic Renewal groups to help the Archdiocese in its awareness and openness to the Holy spirit. He believes that we need groups in our parishes that meet regularly, pray together regularly, and seek to grow with Jesus and the Holy Spirit week by week. He encourages us and challenges us to do more in the Archdiocese, especially as we consecrate the Archdiocese to the Holy Spirit and prepare for the Jubilee Celebration Renewal in The St. Thomas More Prayer Group is working hard to do our part. 6 St. Paul calls us to actively seek charisms; striving eagerly for them. Four times St. Paul calls the Corinthian community to strive eagerly for spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12:31; 14:1, 12, 39). We should not quench the Spirit or despise prophetic utterances (1 Thes 5:19-20). While charisms are freely given by God and God dispenses them as he wishes (1 Cor 12:11), the call to strive eagerly seems to imply that our human cooperation (effort, eagerness and receptivity) helps us to receive the gifts that the Spirit wants to bestow on us. The word strive is used to show that we need effort in cooperating with the Holy Spirit. We need effort, preparation, and study. We are to ask, seek, and knock to receive the gift, and the gifts, of the Holy Spirit (Lk 11:9-13). Active cooperation is important. It is not only hearing the call, but acting upon it, that allows God to work in us and through us (Mt 7:24-27). The charisms come as a gift, an empowering of the Holy Spirit, but our actions dispose us to receive these gifts. In order to receive a gift wrapped in a package you first have to take off the wrapper and open the box. Active striving builds a greater focus and expectancy in us, and disposes us to receive charisms. Here are some actions that can dispose us to receive charisms: Strive Eagerly for Charisms ( Spiritual Gifts) Reading and studying about charisms; Talking with someone who seems to manifest a certain charism; Spending time in prayer reflecting on a charism and asking for it; Asking for prayer from other people for that charism; Willingness to step out in faith in the use of a charism; Reflecting if you and others see good fruits from your use of this charism; Willingness to receive feedback (testing) to purify the use of a gift from trusted, wise leaders. The word eagerly relates to our having right desires, attitudes and receptivity. We need active desire, as well as, active cooperation. We need the proper motivation of love (described in 1 Cor 13); expectant faith; zeal to serve and evangelize; openness to yielding and surrendering to the Spirit s impulses and calls; and a growing inner enthusiasm and peace in seeking a gift. A gift is not a merit badge. It is at the service of God and the Church. We want God to work through us. We know that our human power, wisdom and love are not enough to meet the needs of our Church and world. We need divine power, wisdom and love. Jesus said that the harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few (Lk 10:2). Jesus is eager to work through us, so we should be eager to work for him, and let him work through us! Persons with expectant faith that God will work through them speak out like Mary, Let it be done to me according to your word (Lk 1:38). Active desire and eagerness creates in us receptivity to the Spirit s gifts. The attitude that God wants is, I want charisms, and I m going after them, because God wants to work through me! God is calling me to seek his gifts for the sake of building up the Church! Also, we should have the eagerness of compassion as we see the hurts of our world and those who are lost. Jesus often is moved with compassion before he manifests a charism of healing. There will be growing eagerness in a person as he or she has a deepening sense that a particular gift is important for the ways God is calling him to serve others. They will have a growing spiritual (humble) attraction to this gift; a greater desire to learn more about the gift and talk with people who manifest this gift. He or she will have a spiritual sense that certain gifts fit the direction that the Lord has been leading in their lives. APR 2014-Page 6
