Necesitamos llevar nuestro mensaje directamente a los candidatos presidenciales en las convenciones de sus partidos. Grupos pro inmigrantes están organizando marchas en Denver, Colorado para la Convención Nacional Democrática, y en St. Paul, Minnesota, para la Convención Nacional Republicana. People have been asking: When is the next march? We need to take our message directly to the politicians at their conventions. Pro-immigrant groups are organizing marches in Denver, Colorado, where the Democrats meet, and in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Republicans will gather. Many different voices will be there, especially to oppose the Iraq war. It is vital that we attend in solidarity and add our voice against the war on immigrants being fought at home. If we do not attend, we give politicians permission to ignore our issues. We need to keep up the pressure to stop the raids and we need to make sure that the next president makes immigration reform a top priority. St. Paul is just 5 hours away, so Voces is mobilizing along with other Midwest groups to deliver our message on the opening day of the Republican National Convention - Monday, September 1st, the Labor Day holiday. Fall Primaries - September 9th Local candidates to face fake challengers The Fall primaries, held September 9th, will decide who goes on the ballot for each party in November in races for US Congress, Wisconsin State Assembly and Senate, and county District Attorneys. This year, voters are being warned that everything may not be as it seems. BALANCE OF POWER Democrats, who hold the state Senate, need three seats in November to win a majority in the Assembly. Equally, Republicans can win the State Senate with a similar shift in support. August 16th will be our last big voter registration push before the September 9th Primary elections. Everyone can play a part, whether they re a voter or not. So please join us for just a few hours for this important effort. The day will start with a brief training session at 9 a.m. at the offices of Voces de la Frontera (1027 S. 5th Street). From there, teams will move out into neighborhoods to identify new voters. The day will conclude with potluck at the Voces de la Frontera office, starting around noon. Please sign up by calling the Voces Milwaukee office at Democrats are charging dirty tricks by a group calling itself Clean Sweep Wisconsin. They re pretty much trying to pull a fraud on the voters, says Rep. Christine Sinicki, one of those being targetted. The group, run by former Republican State Senator Tom Reynolds, has been recruiting candidates to run as fake Democrats. In Milwaukee, several Democratic incumbents will face attempts to unseat them by challengers who are not even members of the Democratic Party. The fake candidates are not breaking any election rules by standing as Democrats. However, Clean Sweep Wisconsin could be in hot water over charges of violating state campaign finance and political communication laws. Wisconsin Republican Party officials have said they are not involved in the Clean Sweep effort.

Given the tremendous potential of the Latino vote in Southeastern Wisconsin, and the potential immigrant vote of naturalized US citizens in the state as a whole, Voces de la Frontera recognizes that promoting a culture of civic participation will take time but is well worth the effort. The importance of a more informed citizenry at the polls is underlined by recent efforts to dupe voters in the Fall elections if voters simply voted on a partisan basis. A former Republican state senator, Tom Reynolds, who lost in the 2006 elections to State senator Jim Sullivan, recruited 20 Republican candidates to run as Democrats in the September 9 primary elections and challenge Milwaukee-area Democrats in the north side and Southside in an effort called Clean Sweep. One of the Clean Sweep candidates, Jose Guzman, is running against Assembly District 8 State Representative Pedro Colón. This tactic clearly demonstrates the need for voters to be more informed, not just about party affiliation, but about where the candidates stand on the issues. Operation Clean Sweep includes an explicit anti-immigrant platform. During his term as state senator, Tom Reynolds attempted to pass legislation that would have hurt US citizens who receive public medical care by creating a more expensive bureaucracy on the false charge that undocumented immigrants qualify for public medical benefits when they clearly do not. Fortunately, wisdom prevailed over racism and hate mongering and the proposed legislation was defeated. This is the same man who, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reportedly asked prospective staff whether they were virgins and sent Christmas cards with photos of his family superimposed on the image of Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. According to the Shepherd Express, he is the largest financial beneficiary of Clean Sweep, receiving $1, for travel expenses, despite the fact that all the candidates are in Milwaukee and he lives in West Allis; Reynolds printing business also received $1, for printing services for operation Clean Sweep. These manipulative tactics emphasize the imperative need for voters to be informed about the platform of the candidates and not just their party affiliation. Since then, US Bank, Lincoln State Bank and Landmark Credit Union have also added their voices. These warnings have been echoed in news stories from El Conquistador, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Fox 6, CBS 58 and Telemundo. The Milwaukee District Attorney s office and Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection are currently investigating. The Federal Trade Commission has also pledged to crack down on license scams. Yet, despite growing pressure, Hugo Loyo is still operating Credenciales USA and still advertising. Perhaps he thinks his customers won t report him to the authorities? He should think again. The District Attorney s office isn t one bit interested in the immigration status of people who ve been ripped off - they re only interested in stopping consumer fraud and having victims of crime come forward. The victim s documentary status doesn t make any difference to us, says Assistant District Attorney, Paul Hauer. We re trying to see if a crime has been committed. That s why Voces de la Frontera is encouraging more people to come forward and help bring the rip-off to an end. We are linking closely with the District Attorney s office. The current Milwaukee District Attorney is John Chisholm. His office provides a voice for victims of crime. It protects the community by making investigations and prosecutions for wrong-doing. The office includes a number of specialized units, including consumer fraud, and has a staff of well over 100 lawyers. It is part of County government and operates separately from local Police Departments. 7 Voces de la Frontera - agosto 2008 / August Comentario / Commentary Flor Crisostomo Mi arresto y mi dignidad El miércoles 19 de abril del 2006, a las 9:15 a.m. como habitualmente lo hacíamos, después de laborar de 6:00 a.m. a 9:15 a.m. detuvimos la maquinaria para poder bajar a desayunar. Esa mañana el ambiente se sentía distinto, desde muy temprano vimos que llegaron varios carros particulares. Eso era algo muy normal ya que a la empresa llegaban personas de diferentes compañias a comprar o vender productos y lógicamente a negociar. Frente al área de trabajo donde laboraba tenía más de una hora parada una camioneta blanca con vidrios polarizados, dentro de la camioneta una persona que frecuentemente levantaba un radio y observaba cada movimiento que haciamos. Al momento en que bajé las cortinas la camioneta se alejó My arrest, my Dignity sin nosotros conocer cuáles eran las reales intenciones y el plan a ejecutar. Al llegar al área del comedor notamos que había demasiado movimiento en las oficinas, al ingresar a la oficina vi que las secretarias lloraban y un hombre muy alto acompañado de más personas con armas en la cintura golpeaban la mesa y discutía con el encargado de la empresa. al salir de la oficina vi agentes que salían de entre las pallets, los trailers, y camionetas que llegaban por la parte de atrás. Recuerdo que la ropa que portaban los agentes traían la frase de ICE POLICE en letras amarillas y grandes. Era tanto el desconcierto cuando vimos a varios de nuestros compañeros esposados y empujados por agentes. De pronto salió de la oficina el agente que anteriormente golpeaba la mesa; nos pidió a todos que nos formaramos y entregaramos nuestros documentos o identificaciones. Lógicamente entregamos nuestra matrícula consular como mexicanos, fue entonces que empezó el acoso por parte de los agentes Desde enero del 2008, Flor Crisostomo ha estado en santuario en una iglesia de Chicago. In May, she began a website and blog to tell her story. On Wednesday April 19th 2006, at 9:15 am, as part of our routine, we stopped our machines to eat breakfast. That day at work things felt a little different. We saw vehicles parked around the building since the early morning hours; things looked normal. Business men and women from different companies come to buy and sell products and do their daily business at the company. A white van with polarized windows was parked in front of our workplace for about an hour. Inside the van, a man would periodically speak into a radio to report what he saw. I was fixing a set of curtains and as I looked through the window, the white van moved away. We had no idea of its plan, of the real reason it was there. As we entered the dinning hall we noticed a lot of movement among the people, even the people in their offices were anxious. I walked to the offices and noticed a few of the secretaries crying. A tall man accompanied by a group of people caring firearms was shouting and demanding to speak with the manager of the company. When I left the offices, I noticed officers, men with firearms, coming out of every corner. Men started to fill the company everywhere: around the pallets, the trailers, the busses and at the back of the building. I remember their clothing; their uniforms had the phrase ICE POLICE in large yellow letters. We were in shock, and anger began to build inside us as we saw our coworkers, in handcuffs, being shoved by the ICE agents. Suddenly, the man that was shouting earlier stormed out of the office and told everyone to line up and to show their documents. They took our Mexican identification documents and right after that the harassment began Flor is also making and selling jewelry through her website. Funds raised help support her children in Mexico and ongoing campaign work.

This is a call to be faithful to our American and Religious values. This is a call to stand in solidarity with our Hispanic brothers and sisters. Voces de la Frontera - agosto 2008 / August Sr. Mary McCauley - St. Bridget s Catholic Church The raid in Postville, Iowa was intended to be an example. The Department of Homeland Security is getting even tougher on immigration enforcement, this time including the mass criminalization of workers who were charged with identity theft and jailed. Instead, what happened in Postville has become a rallying cry for faith communities, who have united like never before to call to end these actions. The example they have set is one of unity, courage, and hope. On Sunday, July 27th, over 1,500 people from across the Midwest and the nation came together for an interfaith prayer service at St. Bridget s Catholic Church, followed by a rally in the town. Members of the Milwaukee New Sanctuary Network joined buses organized by the Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice in Madison, participating with over 100 people from Wisconsin. Concerned community members, labor groups, local elected officials, and Jewish, Catholic, and Lutheran religious leaders were united in the call for justice for the hundreds of families affected by the raid. They raised their voices for comprehensive immigration reform based on family unity and just labor practices. Leading Jewish groups from Minneapolis and Chicago had joined with St Bridget s to organize the service and rally, and the Jewish community was present in large numbers. Gideon Aronoff, president of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, traveled from New York to attend. He told the crowd: Our values and our interests require that we care for the stranger - the immigrant - when he or she is in need. We also must stand with Postville and other communities across the country that have been devastated by raids and failed immigration policy. These are the new frontlines of the immigration struggle. And that is why I, and we, are here today.. The public response to the raid has also pushed politicians to act. Members of congress have visited Postville and held hearings to investigate the denial of due process and other basic rights of the 390 workers arrested. Interpreting Injustice Erik Camayd-Freixas was called to Waterloo, Iowa, for an unknown interpreting assignment. He landed in makeshift courtroom as hundreds of Agriprocessors workers were railroaded into jail and deportation following the Postville raid. He watched, horrified, knowing it was all happening beyond cameras and public scrutiny and he knew he had to speak out. Prof. Camayd-Freixas describes arriving at a heavily guarded cattle compound for the saddest procession I have ever witnessed. Driven single-file in groups of 10, shackled at the wrists, waist and ankles, chains dragging as they shuffled through, the slaughterhouse workers were brought in for arraignment. They sat and listened through headsets to the interpreted initial appearance, before marching out again to be bused to different county jails, only to make room for the next row of 10 He says ICE prosecutors led a well-crafted fast-tracking scheme, bogus charge and all. Workers were threatened with aggravated identity theft charges, with a minimum two year sentence, forcing them to accept a plea deal of five months jail and deportation. Professor Camayd-Freixas, a federal court interpreter for 23 years, would normally be expected to keep his experiences confidential. Instead, he followed his conscience and wrote a detailed statement exposing the injustices. Testifying before a House of Representatives subcommittee last month he said: The arrest, prosecution, and conviction of 297 undocumented workers was a process marred by irregularities at every step of the way. Voy a tener mis audiencias con el juez y no se que vaya a pasar conmigo. Pero hasta ahorita ya para dos años, aquí estoy todavía. De pronto, parece que me resigno, parece que yo estoy preparada para irme, pero no. Yo creo que nunca voy a estar preparada para estar lejos de mi familia. Por eso es mi lucha, y por eso tengo que ser fuerte si llega ese día, y yo estoy luchando para que eso no suceda, para que haya unas leyes justas que nos permitan estar en este lugar. Ahorita este día es incierto, realmente, pero vienen cosas buenas. Yo creo que vienen cosas buenas porque Dios nunca va a permitir que pase mucho tiempo, muchas cosas malas. 11 Voces de la Frontera - agosto 2008 / August Reality Tour 2008 Taking our message on the road In July, Voces de la Frontera headed to western Wisconsin for town hall meetings in Owen and Menomonie. The two forums continued the work of last year s 10 city Reality Tour, providing an opportunity to bring people together to discuss the need for just and humane immigration reform. Those attending had chance to hear from those directly affected by our country s broken immigration system... Chris Weisenbeck Farmer in Buffalo County, Wisconsin. My farm is a fourth generation dairy farm. We milk about 350 cows. Before I started employing Hispanic people, I had a very difficult time finding people Most of the time I would find teenagers or people who were out of work and they were usually a short-term hire. I disagree that I m taking work away from other people because most of them do not want this kind of work. It s very frustrating as an employer to have people very capable of working who have difficulty with their papers, have difficulty obtaining things like drivers licenses I m just for some reform. I believe Hispanic people are helping the community because they come with their families and families are the social fabric of communities. They are delightful, good people, good for our communities. I ve been in the villages where my employees are from. There is no work in those villages. They are very impoverished, very poor. They are glad to get out looking for work and that s why they re up working for us. I just hope these kind of meetings don t fall on deaf ears and that people can hear and speak up to our legislators so that they understand the problems we are having in the country. Luz Huitron Arrested in 2006 Whitewater raid. I am here sharing with all of you, to do my small part so that these voices may be heard. It has helped me greatly to work with Voces de la Frontera because our cause is to help all of the people from other countries who find ourselves living here. There was a raid at the factory where I worked. 25 of us were arrested. Two years have gone by since that day. The majority of my co-workers have had to leave, and I don t know what has happened to them. I have lived their pain, we have suffered together due to all this. I have felt how these families have been separated. I believe that is the saddest part, because the reason one comes to this country is for the wellbeing of your family, and to be united as a family. I am still fighting. I will have my hearings with the judge and I don t know what will happen to me. But so far for these two years, I am still here. Sometimes it may seem like I have resigned myself, that I am prepared to leave, but no. I will never be prepared to be far away from my family. That is the reason for my struggle, and for that reason I need to be strong if that day comes, but I am fighting so that will never happen, so that there will be just laws that allow us to be here. Today there is uncertainty, but good things are coming. I believe this because God would never allow a lot of time to go by with bad things. The days I have spent on the tour have been good. I have felt support from Voces and the people of Wisconsin and I will always have them in my heart. Today it is gone. The building stands empty with a For Lease sign outside. On August 8th, 2006, gun toting immigration cops burst in on the first shift and everything changed. 25 workers were hauled away, along with company boss Al Petrie. Petrie soon found himself a pawn in a bigger game. Prosecutors ramped up charges against him to include ID theft, with a possible 30 year sentence. In October 2007, he was forced to accept a plea bargain and was handed 3 months in jail. Long after his business had been destroyed, it was a remarkably vindictive ending. Petrie was a man who paid good wages, was a regular donor to community causes, and had the support of his employees. Yet, most raids see even the most abusive employer given a free pass. A group of peace activists are walking 450 miles in seven weeks to oppose the Iraq war, ending their protest with a rally at the Republican National Convention. The Witness Against War campaign kicked off July 12 in Chicago and will finish September 1st, the same day the Republican Party begins its convention in St Paul, Minnesota. Walkers are calling for an immediate end the war in Iraq, along with funding for veterans initiatives and reconstruction in Iraq. Yet just as Iraq is bringing big profits for defense companies, so too is the militarization of immigration policy. Halliburton offshoot KBR has a $385 million contract to build new immigration prisons, while Boeing has an estimated $2 billion contract for fortifying the border. Luego de la campaña dirigida por el grupo Mujeres Trabajadoras de 9 a 5, una abrumadora cifra de 42,000 firmas fueron recogidas para poder apoyar un cambio laboral en las leyes de Wisconsin (Firmas suficientes para activar un cambio a nivel legislativo de las leyes de Wisconsin). Actualmente, las leyes del estado permiten a los ciudadanos el proponer un tema en la papeleta del votante sin necesidad de la intervención de políticos locales, si más de 26,000 firmas son recogidas. La reunión del Concejo Común del 30 de Julio, aprobó pasar una votación acerca de este tema. The July 30th Common Council meeting formally approved including a binding vote on the measure. If passed, the local ordinance would require all private employers to provide their workers with paid sick time. Currently, 3 out of 4 low-wage workers have no paid sick time. Amy Stear, Director of 9to5, says the new law would make sure workers can accrue one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours they work. This time could be used to look after a sick child. Milwaukee School Board backs student voter work The board of Milwaukee Public Schools has given its backing to students taking part in mock elections and non-partisan Get Out The Vote drives. The MPS decision formally recognizes voter drives as part of civic education and should mean many more students can take part on future polling days. Riverside High School student, Josy Perez, told the board: I believe that the opportunity to participate in nonpartisan electoral and voting efforts will enrich my learning experience. The We Are America Alliance, an immigrant rights group, is taking the "good old-fashioned" approach of planning a march during the Democratic National Convention in Denver. The group says they expect anywhere from 5,000 to 50,000 people at the march on Aug. 26. Anti-immigrant groups have been putting their money where their ideals are for some time. They are attempting and arguably succeeding in directly influencing Congressional elections and legislation through the use of Political Action Committees (PACs). According to the Federal Election Campaign Act, PACs are political committees that receive contributions or make expenditures in excess of $1,000 for the purpose of influencing a federal election. Contributions by individuals to federal PACs are limited to $5,000 per year. PACs are not charities and giving money to them carries no tax benefits. One of the most active antiimmigration PACs is Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC). This North Carolina-based PAC has announced the launch of a campaign to "throw out all incumbents this fall unless that candidate is against comprehensive immigration reform/ amnesty/guest worker." According to Federal Election Commission reports, ALIPAC has raised $164,000 so far this year and some of their past funds were spent not on candidates alone, but according to filings, on a "phone bank where calls were made into targeted states asking people to call Washington to oppose the amnesty bill." On the other side of the issue, Immigrants' List, a pro-immigration reform PAC, is also currently working to influence Congressional races. According to their Web site, "Immigrants' List is the first political action committee of its kind Immigrants' List will support candidates regardless of political party, who will work for meaningful immigration reform and oppose those who use immigration as a political tool to divide the American people." However, groups like Immigrants' List are far outnumbered by the antiimmigrant PACs and they are being out-fundraised by a margin of 20 to 1.
