TMC is a not-for-profit two acute-care hospital health system in Kansas City. The TMC Health System includes TMC Hospital Hill, TMC Lakewood, TMC Behavioral Health, the Jackson County Health Department and a number of primary care practices throughout Eastern Jackson County. TMC is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry. According to information provided by TMC, the new outpatient center in TMC s Hospital Hill location at 2101 Charlotte Street is due to open in Summer 2015 and will help consolidate outpatient medical and surgical services into one facility on Hospital Hill. Services provided will include: Sabates Eye Centers, UMKC Vision Research Center, Eye Foundation of Kansas City, an ambulatory surgery center, diagnostic imaging center, physical/speech and occupational therapy, plastic surgery center and medi-spa, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopedic surgery, urology, podiatry, gastroenterology and ear, nose & throat and audiology. John W. Bluford, current president and CEO of TMC, who retired this week, pointed out that was one of the last official acts of his administration. Bluford was quick to point out that the mission of the hospital will stay the same though the new addition signals the strength of the hospital in meeting the needs of all Kansas City residents. We have really prided ourselves in creating a mixed [patient] portfolio, which simply means that people pay from commercial insurers as well as that we continue our mission of serving people who cannot pay, explained Bluford. We kind of have transformed from what has historically been a safety net hospital to that of a quality hospital maintaining de la ceremonia. Over the years they all have become very close with Sandra and they all wish her the best in her new career. This past weekend Sandra Olivas was given a farewell party by her co-workers at the Lucky Brew Grille in Mission KS. The location is too small to accommodate a QuikTrip store at that location, he said. And for over 20 years, Kansas City Life has talked to the Valentine neighborhood about doing a mixed-use project, Burnett said. They ve done nothing with the properties they own in the area. They participated in city planning decisions about the plan. The proposed store would be 1,500 square feet larger than the one (at 31st Street and Southwest Boulevard). They say they ll fix the traffic, but no one believes them. I was headed west by Browne s Deli last week, and I approached the Trafficway at 5:15 p.m., and I was the 22nd car in line to turn left, Burnett said. Neighborhoods are not interested in talking about it as an option. It s not part of the Midtown plan. Burnett said that a QuikTrip on that site also would mar the area s aesthetics and decrease property values in nearby neighborhoods. Kerry Browne, owner of Browne s Deli, which is on 33rd Street just east of the proposed site for the QuikTrip store, also opposes the store. Browne lives in Coleman Highlands. Browne s Deli has been in business for 127 years and at its current location for 113 years, she said. I have no trouble with QuikTrip, just not here, she told Hispanic News. Opposition to the proposed store isn t a matter of its distance from the neighborhoods that don t want it there but of where that distance is, Browne said. Glover, who holds the City Council s 4th District s atlarge seat, said that he wasn t surprised at the opposition to the proposed store and that he thinks it s not a good plan for that location. Jan Marcason, who holds the 4th District s in-district seat, said that a zoning change would be required in order for the store to be built at the location. QuikTrip or Kansas City Life would have to get a permit to sell alcohol. Marcason said the normal process the city requires for a development would occur. It would be very difficult to get it rezoned if the neighborhoods don t want it, she told Hispanic News. When the QuikTrip people first came to talk to Jim Glover and me, we said we wouldn t proceed until they talked to the neighborhood associations and residents. QuikTrip Corp., based in Tulsa, Okla., has 82 stores in the Kansas City area, 56 of which are in Missouri and 26 in Kansas, according to Mike Thornbrugh, the company s manager of public and government affairs. Of Jackson County s total number of employees excluding the Department of Corrections men currently constitute 51 percent and women 49 percent, according to the county s human resources department. The corrections department is excluded from the calculation because employees in men s facilities are mostly men, by design, and those in women s facilities are mostly women, according to the department. Of the county s total number of board and commission members, women constitute 51 percent and men 49 percent. I m glad that the county is that diverse, Smith told Kansas City Hispanic News. I want to ensure that we have a system in place to keep the numbers in balance. We have a duty to try to ensure that women, minorities and all walks of life are represented. You can demand equality from the government, but you can t legislate thoughts and feelings. I would like to take that goal to the private sector and to every domain. Ironically one of the target areas for Smith s initiative would be his own fire department. According to a May 25 story that appeared on The Topeka Capital-Journal s website, the KCMO and KCK departments as well as fire departments across the nation have problems filling jobs with women and minorities. Smith told Hispanic News that a captain with the fire department is like a front-line supervisor but has no hiring authority. Smith, however, works through his memberships in the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters and the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 42, to recruit women and minorities, he said. I oversee my crew, he said. My crew right now has five people and two of them are women. Women who want to do the job can do the job. Deeming the growing numbers of unaccompanied child refugees in U.S. government custody an international humanitarian situation, NCLR (National Council of La Raza) today endorsed Senator Robert Menendez s (D.-N.J.) multipoint plan to address the issue and also called for greater financial support of the many humanitarian, legal and children s organizations that have been leading efforts to assist these children. What we re seeing played out here is an urgent international humanitarian issue, said Janet Murguía, President and CEO of NCLR. These are young children fleeing violence and seeking a safe haven. Whether in their own country, in neighboring nations or at the U.S. border, they are refugees and should be treated as such. The idea that some would claim otherwise is a tragic consequence of a needlessly polarized immigration debate. How we address this issue reflects how well we are upholding our values as a nation. While the primary reason for this crisis is abundantly clear, the solution is much more complex and involves not just law enforcement and U.S. domestic policy, but also U.S. foreign policy and the participation of international agencies. We believe that Senator Bob Menendez s thoughtful plan, which was issued late last week, is an important step forward in addressing this crisis. It calls for, among other things, focusing immediately on the welfare of the children, cracking down on smugglers and a renewed emphasis on fostering social and economic development in the region, continued Murguia. In addition, several NCLR Affiliates have been called into action to help provide basic services and support to these children such as Southwest Key in Austin, Texas, the largest provider of child welfare services in the nation. We will open five new shelters in the next month just to serve these child refugees, and we need to remember that they are young children desperate for what most children take for granted: a safe place to live and grow, noted Juan Sanchez, Southwest Key President and CEO. Our hope now is to get the remaining 3,000 or so kids who are still in border patrol offices into shelters or with an appropriate guardian. Right now the most urgent need is to get these children the legal help they need. There are a number of tireless organizations who have long been involved in these issues such as Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) and the National Immigration Law Center (NILC), as well as ProBar, the American Bar Association s immigrant/refugee representation project. We urge attorneys, companies and other individuals to consider donating both critically needed financial and in-kind support such as pro bono assistance to these organizations, as well as supporting other deeply involved charitable organizations such as Church World Service and Catholic Charities, concluded Murguía. Those of us who had high hopes for change following the impactful marches of 2006 and the political sea change that followed can only conclude that Obama was ill-advised by his inner circle and ill-served by his staff from Day One on the issue of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. In my view the well-researched report chronicles the failures of a weak President and inept Congress. The only thing the two branches agree on is that the system is broken. Truth be told, they both lack the courage and the inner strength of their convictions to fix the problem. Meanwhile Obama is still telling anyone who will listen that he is the immigration champion! As a candidate he told Latinos everywhere Si Se Puede! Since his election all we ve heard from him is Yo No Puedo and No Se Puede. Obama never will be our immigration champion because real champions don t squander opportunities to win, which he did five years ago. He s a cheerleader, a Supporter in Chief. That s all we have in the White House. This is clearly our fight, which we have to win to save our families from his deportation policies. In the Introduction the report states... the Obama Administration has implemented and pursued immigration enforcement policies and practices that have resulted in historically unprecedented numbers of removals/deportations of immigrants living...in the United States. The Administration s immigration enforcement choices carved swaths of devastation across the Latino community, leaving a humanitarian and moral crisis in its wake.
