I think Do you agree? No, I don't. I think... Now you are going to listen to some information about energy. After listening and reading the text in Worksheet 1, were you right? 2 Work in pairs. 7 3 Work in pairs. Find the answer to the second question in your worksheet 2 on Internet. Where does it come from? Now, locate the countries where your energy source is found or is being produced in the world map in Worksheet 4. For that you should use the labels provided in worksheet 2. ORIGINATED (energy source) 4 Work in pairs. Find out the advantages and disadvantages of your source of energy and write them in worksheet 2. In the end, your group will read them to the class. 8 5 Work in groups of four. Talk with your partners to find the answer to the question in worksheet 3: What differences are there between the countries which use renewable energies and those other where these energies are not used so much? Think of their economy, population, political system, etc. Which countries use renewable energies? Their economy is based on... Which countries depend on fossil energies? Their inhabitants live mainly in big cities You can use the information displayed in the world map that locates the energy sources, and all the advantages and disadvantages mentioned before in Activity 4. Finally, your group should write 80 to 100 words summarizing your opinion in worksheet 3. All the essays will be displayed and read out in class. The best participants will be chosen to take part in a round table. 6 One student from each group in Activity 5 will participate in a debate on the topic: Renewable or non renewable, that s the question If you are not one of the students in the debate, don t worry, you will be able to participate and give your opinion in the final 10 minutes of the round table. 2º de ESO: Renewable energy 8

10 WORKSHEET 1 DEFINITION OF Energy is one of the most fundamental parts of our universe. We use energy to do work. Energy lights our cities. Energy powers our vehicles, trains, planes and rockets. Energy warms our homes, cooks our food, plays our music, gives us pictures on television. Energy powers machinery in factories and tractors on a farm. Energy from the sun gives us light during the day. It dries our clothes when they're hanging outside on a clothes line. It helps plants grow. Energy stored in plants is eaten by animals, giving them energy. And predator animals eat their prey, which gives the predator animal energy. Everything we do is connected to energy in one form or another. Energy is defined as: "the ability to do work." When we eat, our bodies transform the energy stored in the food into energy to do work. When we run or walk, we "burn" food energy in our bodies. When we think or read or write, we are also doing work. Cars, planes, light bulbs, boats and machinery also transform energy into work. Work means moving something, lifting something, warming something, lighting something. All these are a few of the various types of work. But where does energy come from?
