The One Church One Family Capital Campaign Saint Louis Catholic Community Capital Campaign office is happy to inform you all that we still have legacy bricks available. 4 FAMILY LIFE The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Family life is sacred, but it is not without trial. Perhaps this is the most important message we can glean from today s readings. If Jesus, Mary, and Joseph can trip up sometimes can disconnect then we shouldn t find it surprising when such things happen to us as well. And parents everywhere (children, too) can probably relate to and take some solace in the Gospel s account of Mary and Joseph after Jesus explained why he stayed behind in the temple. They heard his words, Luke tells us, But they did not understand what he said to them (Luke 2:50). Amen! Nevertheless, Jesus does go back home with them, and continues to thrive under their care. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This New Year s Eve, at the turning of the year, you may catch a glimpse of the old year, a cartoon figure of a hunched old man with a sickle, Father Time. Where else but in this column could you learn that this is in fact a pope? December 31 was in the old calendar the feast of St. Sylvester. Legend says that Sylvester healed the Emperor Constantine of leprosy, and presided at the liturgy of baptism for the grateful emperor. In 314, he was chosen pope, and it fell to him to organize the peacetime church, free at last from persecution. He founded the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. In northern Europe Sylvester Night is a time of great parties with eating, dancing, and singing recalling perhaps the joy of the church in the fresh air of Sylvester s papacy. In Poland, there was great fear as the year 1000 approached that an immense dragon would devour the earth and set fire to the heavens. The people prayed earnestly to St. Sylvester, trusting that the saint would not permit such suffering on his feast day. They ve been celebrating ever since! Many New Year s customs have pagan roots, like the British First Footer tradition. The idea is that the first person setting foot into your house in the new year determines the luck for the year ahead. The ideal first footer was not a bit like old Pope Sylvester, but rather a tall, dark-haired man carrying the right gift. A handsome first footer meant the year ahead would be pleasant, and if he carried bread or a shovel of coal there would be food and warmth in the future. Who will be your household s first footer? Este puede ser el mensaje más importante que encontramos en las lecturas de hoy. Si Jesús, María y José pueden tropezar de vez en cuando desconectarse entonces no nos debe sorprender cuando eso mismo nos ocurre a nosotros también. Y los padres dondequiera que estén (hijos también) pueden ver el parecido y hasta consolarse con el relato bíblico que habla de María y José después de que Jesús les explica porqué se quedó atrás en el templo. Escucharon sus palabras, nos dice Lucas, pero ellos no comprendieron lo que les acababa de decir (Lucas 2:50). Amén! TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El primer domingo después de la Navidad celebramos la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Los latinos somos un pueblo muy unido en familia. Para nosotros es más que un pequeño grupo compuesto de padre, madre, hijos e hijas. La familia para nosotros los latinos es un conjunto grande de abuelos, abuelas, tíos, tías, primos, primas, compadres, comadres, suegros, suegras y otros más además del padre, la madre y los hijos. Para los latinos una fiesta que celebra la familia de Jesús es la cosa más natural del mundo. Extrañamente esta fiesta no es muy antigua. En realidad es una celebración que data de comienzos de la época moderna en el siglo XVII. Antes de estas fechas la familia de Jesús casi siempre era entendida como compuesta por Jesús, María y Ana (la madre de María). Se daba por hecho que José estaba por allí. Pero en el siglo XVII muchos perdieron sus padres pues tenían que ir a las fábricas a trabajar. Por eso el magisterio instituyó la conmemoración de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José para recordar a los padres cristianos su deber ante sus hijos y su esposa. 7 7 Lecturas Del Dia Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia PRIMERA LECTURA (1 Samuel 1: 20-22, 24-28) En toda comunidad hay personas más mayores que significan la historia de lo vivido y la memoria de lo que siempre se ha añorado. Son el fondo existencial de la familia, del grupo o de la sociedad. Los necesitamos para no perdernos en la sucesión continua de tiempos, para saber cuál es nuestro horizonte, para que reconstruyan la esperanza de todos cuando nos sentimos abatidos. Ellos ya pasaron por todo. Saben cómo reaccionar. El autor de este libro, probablemente anciano, lo refleja a su manera. SEGUNDA LECTURA (Colosenses 3: 12-21) Ya los antiguos experimentaban dudas y preguntas sobre la fe y su relación con la vida. Cuando las cosas se les ponían difíciles, mucho más que a nosotros, los interrogantes les aparecian. Para qué sirve la fe? Esta lectura nos pone hoy a un antepasado común como modelo de lo que es vivir con fe. Tener una cualidad de confianza poco común. Ser capaces de seguir, a pesar de todo, y confiar en el Dios que sabe a dónde lleva todo esto. EVANGELIO (Lucas 2: 41-56) Unas personas ancianas, simbolos de una religiosidad que manifesta ya su obsolescencia en el proceso de conocer y relacionarse con Dios, ven el futuro religioso en un Niño. Como en las familias cuando nace un niño y lo cambia todo. Sobre todo cambia la actitud ante la vida. La alegría del nacimiento se une a la responsabilidad de atenderlo en todo lo que necesite. Alegría, compromiso, esperanza, cambio. Son los rasgos que se nos piden como características de esta familia que somo lo cristianos. Solo Una Hora Only One Hour St. Francis Xavier Cabrini was born in Italy yet was the first American citizen to become a Saint. She started a missionary order in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to care for the poor in hospitals and schools. When she arrived in New York City in 1889 without even a place to stay with her small number of sisters, they made several Holy Hours of Adoration before the Sacred Eucharistic Heart of Jesus every day despite their very demanding schedule. She said: Pray always with Jesus, always remembering that a soul united with Him can do everything. At the time of her death in 1917, she had more than four thousand sisters and over fifty houses in addition to many orphanages, schools and hospitals worldwide. 8 Midnight Musings We Are Family We Are Family so sang Sister Sledge in 1979, and we still hear their anthem on the radio. (See how old I am to remember this stuff!) Sister Sledge is an American musical group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 1971, originally composed of four sisters named Sledge. Yet they remind us that we are family for each other on so many levels. This Feast of the Holy Family celebrates family in the many shapes that it takes. Family mean much more than a husband and wife with their children. I have no married life. I have no children. Yet I know what family means to me. I love my brothers and their children and grandchildren. I love the parish community in which I live. Some people have asked me: Are you going home for the holidays? I routinely respond: I am home. Although this was the first Thanksgiving that I have not shared with members of my blood family, I felt at home at our wonderful Eucharistic celebration; I felt at home with the fifty people who shared Thanksgiving dinner in the Family Center. We all experience family on many levels, just as they did in the bible. So much of the Old Testament told stories of men with many wives; but they were family. The New Testament begins with the story of an unwed mother who might experience rejection/divorce from her husband. Families are complicated. Half of American adults are not married: divorced, widowed, or never have been married. Pope Francis called together a Synod for the Family that had two sessions over two years that s how important he considers the family! They talked about family: husbands and wives with their own children. They also talked about blended families: parents after divorce marry again and make a new family reality. They talked about single parent families. Family means intimacy; those relationships appear in many different ways and take many different shapes. We need people to belong to in the very personal and intimate ways that family makes possible. From the book of Genesis we hear God comment: It is not good for the man to be alone (Genesis 2:18). Originally this introduced the creation of woman as the partner for man. However, it also comments on the very nature of human existence: it is not good for anyone to be alone; to live by oneself and for oneself is no real life. Jesus described God as the Father of a family where we are brothers and sisters for each other. Life only makes sense in relationship. Relationships do not destroy individuality, but they make authentic individualism possible. Let us celebrate family this weekend. It is complicated, confusing, challenging. It is still the only way we can realize our full potentials as humans and as Christians. Yours in Christ,

9 Pensamientos de Media Noche Somos Familia Somos Familia era título de la canción de las Hermanas Sledge en 1979, y de vez en cuando se escucha en la radio. (Ven cuan viejo soy que me acuerdo de estas cosas.) Las Hermanas Sledge eran un grupo musical americano de Filadelfia, Pensilvania, formado 1971, originalmente compuesto por cuatro hermanas de apellido Sledge. Aún así nos recuerdan que somos familia los unos a los otros en diferentes niveles. La Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia celebra la familia en sus diferentes formas y niveles. La Familia significa mucho más que el esposo y la esposa y sus hijos. Yo no tengo una vida matrimonial. Yo no tengo hijos. Aún así, yo se lo que significa una familia para mí. Yo amo a mis hermanos y a sus hijos y a sus nietos. Yo amo la comunidad parroquial donde vivo. Algunas personas me han preguntado: Va a su casa para las fiestas? Siempre contesto lo mismo: Yo estoy en mi casa. Aunque esta es la primera vez que no comparto el Día de Acción de Gracias con mi familia de sangre. Me sentí en casa compartiendo una hermosa celebración Eucarística; me sentí cómodo y en mi casa con otras cincuenta personas compartiendo la comida de Acción de Gracias en el Family Center. Todos sentimos la familia en diferentes niveles, así como en la Biblia. Muchas historias del Antíguo Testamento nos hablan de hombres con muchas esposas; pero eran familia. El Nuevo Testamento comienza con la historia de la mujer que sería repudiada/divorciada de su esposo. Las Familias son complicadas. La mitad de los adultos americanos no están casados: divorciados/as, viudos/as, o nunca se casaron. El Papa Francisco convocó a un Sínodo para la Familia que tiene dos secciones en dos años - eso muestra cuan importante es para él la Familia. Se habla de la Familia: esposo y esposa con sus hijos. También se habla de familias mezcaldas: padres después de divorciados se vuelven a casar y forman una nueva familia. Se habla de familias con un sólo padre o madre. Familia significa intimidad; esas relaciones aparecen de diferente modo y toman muchas y diferentes formas. Necesitamos personas que pertenezcan de forma muy personal y de manera íntima como la familia lo hace posible. En el libro del Génesis escuchamos a Dios dicir: No está bien que el hombre esté solo; voy a hacerle una ayuda adecuada (Génesis 2:18). Originalmente este pasaje intoduce la creación de la mujer como pareja del hombre. Sin embargo, también comenta en la verdadera naturaleza de la exitencia humana: no es bueno para nadie estar solo; vivir en soledad y para sí mismo, no es una vida real. Jesús describe a Dios como el Padre de familia donde nosotros somos hermanos y hermanas para cada uno. La vida sólo tiene sentido en relaciones. Las relaciones no destruyen la individualidad, pero crean la posibilidad de un individualismo auténtico. Este fin de semana celebramos la Familia. Es complicada, confusa, desafiante. Aún así es la única manera que podemos realizar el total potencial como seres humanos y como Cristianos. Suyos en Cristo,
