1 W hat Scripture readings you hear, this weekend, will be determined by which Mass you attend! If you attend a Mass where the RCIA is preparing our catechumens, you hear of water from the rock in the desert, and of the Samaritan woman at the well-- meditations on the nourishment of God that comes to us in our dryness, yet, which must be mined for deeper meaning as we grow. If you come to one of the other services, you will hear of the giving of the 10 commandments on Mt. Sinai, and the story of the cleansing of the Temple by Jesus in the gospel. The point of the first reading is not just commandments and a "spirituality of law," though those are important, but more so that the Voice spoke in the silence of the desert. It was only when one had attained a certain "quiet" symbolized by a several week jaunt into the desert after having crossed the Red Sea, that the people of Israel could begin to hear. What will it take for YOU to begin to "hear"--for ME? The story of the cleansing of the Temple comes from the Gospel of John, where it is not presented as the opening of Holy Week (or Palm Sunday) as it is in Matthew, Mark and Luke. Rather, it is seen as the first really "public" act of Christ's ministry, following close on His action at the Marriage in Cana. So, those two: the Marriage in Cana and the clearing out of the area of the Temple known as the Court of the Gentiles were used by John to introduce Jesus to the world. Today we are asked to look at "the quiet needed for hearing" and the necessity of a "place to stand in order to hear." Do you have those in your life? That's the Lenten question we struggle with this week. - Fr. Bill Axe D ependiendo a qué misa vengan va a depender qué lecturas escuchen. Si vienen a una misa donde el RICA está preparando a nuestros catecúmenos, escucharán del agua que viene de la piedra del desierto, y de la mujer samaritana en el pozo de agua meditaciones de las nutriciones de Dios que nos llega en tiempos secos, y debemos de aceptar que Dios entre para que podamos crecer. Si vienen en las otras misas, van escuchar sobre los Diez Mandamientos en el Monte Sinaí, y la historia de la limpieza por Jesús en el Templo. El punto de la primera lectura de los mandamientos, es más de una espiritualidad de la ley, aunque sea importante, es de que la Voz habló en el silencio del desierto. Pero fue sólo cuando cruzar el desierto por un buen tiempo en silencio que la gente de Israel pudieron escuchar. Qué es lo que debes hacer o cambiar para poder escucharme? La historia de la limpieza en el Templo viene del Evangelio de Juan, donde no se presente al principio de la Semana Santa (o en Domingo de Ramos) pues son Mateo, Marcos y Lucas. Más bien es el primer acto público del ministerio de Cristo, siguiéndolos cercas en Su acción en las Bodas de Caná. Entonces, estos dos: la Bodas de Caná y la limpieza del área del Templo conocida como la Corte de los Gentiles fueron usados por Juan para introducir a Jesús al mundo. El día de hoy se nos pide a que veamos al silencio para escuchar y la necesidad de un lugar para poder escuchar. Lo tienen en sus vidas? I n the first reading and in the Gospel, we are presented with two of the fundamental institutions of the religion of ancient Israel, the Torah and temple. The Torah gave shape to both the peoples religious life and their social, economic and political life. The temple in Jerusalem was the central site of worship for Israelites and was a place where the realm of creation opened up to the realm of God. In the Gospel, Jesus quite literally overturns all that. Jesus' body has become the new temple, the meeting place of heaven and earth. The people who witnessed Jesus' actions and heard his world did not really get this. As Paul says, the wisdom of God often appears to us as foolishness. Let us this Lent ask God to purify our hearts so that we can receive the wisdom and power that will allow us to recognize Jesus as God present among us. 4 Religious Education Congress 2015 Our Confirmation students will be attending Youth Day, on March 12, joining over 15,000 youth from all over Southern California and beyond. Our Ministers will also be attending the Annual Religious Education Congress in Anaheim from March Over the weekend they will participate in liturgies, praise, workshops and a variety of experiences with internationally renowned leaders. Keep them all in your prayers as they get ready to enrich and revitalize their faith once more. Members of the parish staff will be attending Religious Education Congress: Sr. Karen, Fr. Bill, Fr. There are many safety issues we teach children: bike safety, water safety, fire prevention, driver's training, etc. Personal safety programs should have age appropriate lessons that give children the skills they need to protect themselves without frightening them. Keeping children unaware of the dangers around them does not keep them safe. Predators count on children not knowing what to do.
