DIAPER DRIVE What better way to honor our Mother Mary during the month of May, than to help a mom in need. The Human Concerns outreach this month is a Diaper Drive to aid the ELIZABETH CLOSET. This is our parish joint effort with St. Mary s Parish. Diapers, wipes and coupons for diapers can be placed in the box in the back of church. Monetary donations ns in the Outreach box would also be appreciated. On the 4 th Thursday of the month a group of volunteers from St. Mary's and St. Mark's organize clothing, diapers, wipes, baby formula and other donated items to be distributed on the 1 st Friday of the month to needy families. 9 There are two images of the Holy Spirit in today s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. It says that all who gathered in the one room heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven and goes on to say that something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire. Just as the evangelist does not say that there was an actual dove at the bapsm of Jesus, Luke does not say that there was an actual wind and fire at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit does not lend himself/herself to physical representaon, because the Spirit cannot be seen as such. Yet the Holy Spirit is profoundly real. Rather than aempng to describe what the Holy Spirit looks like, the Bible says great things about what the Spirit does, how it impacts on our life. Paul uses an image from nature, speaking about the fruits of the Spirit. He is talking about the visible flowering of the Spirit in a person s life. We may not be able to see the Holy Spirit, but we are able to see the Spirit s powerful impact on our outlook and behavior, just as we cannot see the wind, but can surely see its impact on the world about us. Whenever we find love, joy, peace, paence, kindness, generosity, trusulness, gentleness, and self-control, the Spirit is there at work, made visible through these qualies and virtues. The person who most of all possessed these qualies was Jesus himself Pastoral Care WHAT THE SPIRIT DOES ST MARK S 9 because he was full of the Holy Spirit, full of the life of God. That divine life and love were poured out on Pentecost, just as Jesus had promised, inially on his group of apostles, and then through them on all who are open to receive this powerful and wonderful gi. The Spirit is constantly at work in our life, helping to make us more like Jesus. The ordinary, day to day expressions of goodness and kindness, of paence and gentleness, of faithfulness and self-control, are all manifestaons of the Spirit that has been given to us by God. We need to recognize the Spirit s presence in the common happenings of everyday life. The Spirit is not other-worldly; it is humanity at its best. Today s first reading also gives us an example of humanity at its best. On Pentecost there was a wonderful communion among people from all over the Roman Empire. They were united in hearing in their own language the preaching of the apostles about the marvels of God. In spite of differences in language and culture there was a profound understanding among them. Wherever we find such communion of heart and spirit today among those who are strikingly different, there the Holy Spirit is at work. Unity in diversity is the work of the Spirit --- it s what the Spirit does Cuidado Pastoral
