Please provide a phone number in case this happens and we need to contact you. The staff must be able to reach you. If you cannot be reached, you risk having your surgery cancelled. InPerson Visit: Some patients must go to the clinic in person. Bypassed: Some patients who have had recent surgery at UWMC have already been cleared by PreAnesthesia and will be cleared again on the day of surgery. 2 Days Before Surgery If you shave: Do NOT shave with a blade razor 48 hours before your surgery. You may use an electric shaver if desired. Avoid shaving any area of your body near your surgical site.

6 Page 2 Hand Surgery: Preparing for your operation Do NOT eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the day before your surgery. Day Before Surgery Reduce the Risk of Infection Shower or bathe both the night before and the morning of surgery. Use a special soap called Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG). CHG can be purchased at most large pharmacies in both a 2% and 4% solution. Either concentration is acceptable. A common brand name is Hibiclens, but any brand is OK. Be sure to follow the instructions on the box or container. Do NOT use CHG on your face or to wash your hair. Use the CHG soap from your neck down, washing well, especially around the area of your surgery. Rinse well and repeat. Pat dry with a clean towel and put on clean clothes. Fasting Guidelines Do NOT eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the day before your surgery. PreSurgery Phone Call PreAnesthesia will call you the day before your surgery, or on Friday if your surgery is on Monday, to confirm the time of your arrival. If your surgery is at Roosevelt Surgery Center, PreAnesthesia will call you between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your surgery takes place at the Surgery Pavilion or medical center operating room, PreAnesthesia will call you between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. If you do not receive a call by 4:30 p.m., please feel free to call the PreAnesthesia Clinic at Cancellations If you need to cancel your surgery less than 24 hours before it is scheduled: Call your Surgery Coordinator at the Bone and Joint Center. If it is after 5 p.m. the day before your surgery, call the Ambulatory Surgery Center at

UWMC Clinic staff are also available to help at any time. For questions about your surgery, please call For questions about anesthesia, please call the PreAnesthesia Clinic at Day of Surgery Shower or bathe the morning of your surgery. Follow the instructions on page 2 about using CHG soap. After your morning shower or bath, do NOT use hair products, deodorant, lotion, makeup, or fragrances. Remove all jewelry, including earrings and rings. Your arrival time is about 1½ hours before your surgery. Your surgery is at UWMC Roosevelt Ambulatory Surgery Center: Check in at the Ambulatory Surgery Center, 2nd floor at 4245 Roosevelt Way N.E. The Ambulatory Surgery Center is to the left of the Bone and Joint Center. Your surgery is at the Surgery Pavilion or medical center operating room: Check in at Surgery Reception, 2nd floor of the Surgery Pavilion at 1959 N.E. Pacific Street. After Your Surgery Going Home A responsible adult must be with you on the day of your surgery. This person must be able to drive your home after your surgery. You cannot drive yourself home or have a taxi cab take you home if you are alone. Someone will need to stay with you up to 24 hours after surgery. Do NOT use the CHG soap after surgery. PostOperative Visit : Eastside Specialty Clinic: Not yet scheduled. Please call to schedule your postop appointment 10 to 14 days after your surgery date. Box Roosevelt Way. Seattle, WA (HAND) Prescription Refill Policy Routine prescription requests will not be honored after hours unless you have had a surgery within the last 24 hours. Please call and ask for the nurse working with the Hand Service. It may take up to 42 hours to refill your prescription.
