4 From the Pastor s Desk I hope you have noticed the recent inserts in the bulletins. These reflections on The Family Fully Alive are meant to help prepare us for the World Meeting of Families which will take place next month in Philadelphia. This international Catholic meeting will bring together thousands of families for prayer and reflection on the Church s teachings on the family. The overarching theme of the event is The Family Fully Alive, but there are ten topics under that heading: Created for Joy; The Mission of Love; The Meaning of Human Sexuality; Two Become One; Creating the Future; All Love Bears Fruit; Light in a Dark World; A Home for the Wounded Heart; Mother, Teacher, Family: The Role of the Church; Choosing Life. The bulletin inserts are meant to touch upon these ten topics and give us a taste of what the World Meeting of Families will be about. Pope Francis and other Church leaders think it worthwhile to reflect upon the meaning and purpose of the family. For example, what is the function of the family in the life of a child or in the larger context of society? What is God s plan for family life and how does a family achieve its ultimate goal? These questions are worth our pondering. May the Lord bless you throughout this week. Father David Schalk Answer to last week s question: The name of the Blessed Virgin Mary is mentioned at least twice at every Sunday Mass. She is mentioned when we say the Creed and during the Eucharistic Prayer. This week s question: We celebrate the Feast of St. Bartholomew on Monday, August 24. How was St. Bartholomew martyred? The Sisters Corner The sisters will begin a new series of bible studies. This introductory course will meet every Monday and Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., beginning this Monday, August 24. The same course will also be offered on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., beginning this Wednesday, August 26. If you have not had a bible study with the sisters, now is the time to learn more about your Catholic faith! If you have questions or would like to sign up, contact the convent at (This event is in Spanish.) Young people ages 7-11 are encouraged to join Chiquitin Misionero. Come to the convent every Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in order to make new friends and enjoy activities with the Missionary Servants of the Word. (This event is in Spanish.) Parish News The Knights of Columbus will be hosting the Red Cross Blood Drive this Sunday, August 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the church basement. When you give blood, you save a life! The Divine Mercy Prayer Group is hosting a retreat for healing and spiritual growth next weekend, August The primary theme is Go into the Whole World and Proclaim the Gospel to Every Creature. Father Antonio Mendez from the Dominican Republic will be directing the retreat and praying with us that weekend. Everyone is invited to attend. (This event is in Spanish.) Please note that there will be no confessions at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday, August 29. This is due to other activities in the parish at that time.
