Your child will drink barium, a white liquid, while we take X-ray pictures. The barium will help us see the parts of the body that digest food. Your child will lie down on an X-ray table in a room with soft lighting. As your child drinks the barium, we will take X-rays. We will move a large X-ray machine over your child s body. We will help your child roll over several times as we take more X-rays. (We may need your help for this.) The X-rays will show the barium as it travels through your child s body. You may stay with your child during the exam, unless there s a chance that you are pregnant. Your child may have one or more of the following tests: A barium swallow (esophagram) looks at the esophagus (a tube inside the throat). When you swallow, food travels down the esophagus to the stomach. An upper GI looks at the esophagus, stomach and the beginning of the small intestine. A small bowel follow-through looks at the small intestine. If your child is having a small bowel exam, he or she will drink more barium. We will take X-rays every 20 to 60 minutes until the barium reaches the large intestine. You and your child may go into the waiting room in between pictures. What should I know about barium? It is important for your child to take big sips and drink as much as possible. The barium will leave a chalky taste in your child s mouth. We can add flavors to the barium to make it taste better. If your child has trouble drinking the barium, we may need to pass a small feeding tube through the nose and esophagus into the stomach. 3 Spanish

There may be some discomfort while the tube is being inserted. How long will it take? The esophagram and upper GI usually take 45 to 60 minutes. Some tests take longer than others, as everyone s body works differently. If your child will also have a small bowel follow-through, it may take several hours. Be prepared to spend all day at the hospital. When will I know the exam results? The radiologist (X-ray doctor) will write a report of your child s test results. Your family doctor will discuss the results with you at your next visit. How can I get my child ready for the exam? Explain the exam in words your child will understand. Ask what she or he wants to know. Many children want to know if the exam hurts or what it will feel like. Be honest but calm with your child. Very young children should be told the day of the exam. They do not need to know too far in advance. Talk with your child about the importance of doing what the staff asks. 4 Spanish

The barium makes it hard to have a bowel movement. Please urge your child to drink lots of water in the next 24 hours. Your child s stool (bowel movements) will be white at first. Take walks, if possible. If your child does not have a bowel movement within two days, tell your doctor. After the exam, you or your insurance carrier will receive two bills, one for the hospital charge and one for the doctor s charge. 5 Spanish
