1 TOUCH MATH What is it and why is my child learning this? Memorizing math facts is an important skill for students to learn. Some students have difficulty memorizing these facts, even though they are doing fine in other areas of mathematics. Students learn Touch Math to help them with everyday math. Touch Math allows them to count without using their fingers. As they get older, counting on fingers is something that may embarrass them and make them feel less capable than other students. On timed tests, putting down a pencil to count on fingers will slow them down. Finger counting or counting in their head may also be inaccurate if not done carefully. It is important for students to use the Touch Math system EXACTLY as shown. Learning to use the touch points in the same order every time speeds up the process because the mind doesn t have to think, Did I count that touch-point already? Students will only use Touch Math on math facts that are not memorized. Does this mean my child is having trouble with math? This doesn t necessarily mean your child has problems with all mathematics or that she/he is below grade level. Touch Math is just one more way to help your child think about mathematics. Everyone learns in different ways. Touch Math benefits many different learning styles. How do they add, subtract, and multiply? Add: Students put the big number in their head, and then touch add the smaller number by touching the touch-points. Subtract: Students put the big number in their head and then touch the touch-points as they count backwards (count down). Multiply: Skip count and touch each point. Multiplying 3 x 6, touch the points on the six and count by 3 s. If you have any questions please contact me. lb 12
