10 What is Title I? It is the largest federal aid program The Federal government gives money to school districts based on the number of lowincome families in each district Title I money is used for extra educational services for children who are behind in school

11 Three Important Ideas of Title I All students should work toward the same high standards Title I s job is to provide help to students who need it to reach proficiency in reading and math Tutoring, supplementary materials, etc.

12 Three Important Ideas of Title I Local districts and schools know best what their students need to succeed Title I allows them to decide how to use Title I money to help students succeed

13 Three Important Ideas of Title I Parents are partners in helping all students achieve: School and home work closely together. Parents are welcomed in the school and participate in school activities and events

14 How can Title I money be used? Lathrop School uses the money for the following: Supplementary materials to help students become proficient in Math and Literacy Tutors Qualified tutors Professional Development opportunities

15 How can Title I help me as a parent? Family literacy activities Parent meetings and training activities Family Math Night

16 If my child is in title I, how can I help? Parents can help their children be more successful by supporting classroom instruction and being involved in your child s educational experience Find out what your child is being taught Keep in close contact with your child s teacher Make sure your child does his or her homework Attend parent-teacher conferences Talk with your child about school Join your local parent-teacher organization (PTO)

17 Frequently asked questions Are students pulled out of class for Title I instruction, or are they taught in the regular classroom? Title 1 instruction is usually delivered in a small group setting outside of the classroom. Students are generally tutored 3 times a week for approximately 20 minutes, above and beyond the regular Math/Literacy lessons taught in the regular classroom setting. Who provides Title I services, the regular classroom teacher or another teacher? Qualified certified teachers. How are students chosen for Title I? Scores of individual students, from ISAT, DEA, and other assessments, are analyzed to determine whether there is a need for supplementary instruction in the areas of Reading and/or Math. How is progress measured for children in Title I? A variety of informal assessments will be given, along with DEA. Will progress be measured the same as for all other children in the school? Yes. Students receiving Title 1 tutoring will take the same assessments as everyone else.
