3 Letter from Celeste Bruno Dear Library Community, June 11, 2009 The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) has embarked on a partnership with the Boston Bruins to promote our Summer Reading Programs. Our goal is to increase the visibility of the Summer Reading Program and, in the process, attract more teens and non-users into libraries and the programs. The new partnership ultimately sends the message that libraries and reading are for everyone, even tough guys like the Bruins. A few short weeks ago, we were approached by the Bruins as part of their goal of expanding their presence in the community. They are active community citizens and strong believers in promoting literacy. We, (the MBLC and you), the network of community libraries, bring a ready-made reading program to the partnership while the Bruins bring their widespread awareness and popularity and substantial marketing reach. We both agree we can accomplish more as a team than each one could alone. By all accounts it has been short notice to get things started for this summer. Although next year we ll be working with the Bruins on a fully-integrated program with a long head start for planning, promotion and production, we did not want to give up on the idea of getting something on a smaller scale started this year. Participants who register online simply click yes I would like to participate in the Bruins Read program found on the registration page of the online summer reading program. The Bruins have been generous in their support for this year s program. They have included many prizes for online summer reading participants (prize information is included in this toolkit). While the prizes are fun for the participants, we are equally pleased that the Bruins recognize the importance of encouraging reading and want to join us in developing a fully integrated program for 2010 Summer Reading which will include all summer reading participants, not just those who register online. Sincerely, Celeste Bruno MBLC Communications Specialist Communications Specialist Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners 98 North Washington Street Boston, MA x (in state) Fax:

7 Summer Reading Programs at the Library In June, public libraries across the Commonwealth will kick off their summer reading programs for preschool children, school-aged children, young adults, and families. Participants choose their own books, track progress online and enjoy a sense of achievement. In addition to the intrinsic value of reading, your students will enjoy many benefits: Skill maintenance and improvement: reading over the summer helps kids maintain skills they ve learned over the academic year and grow towards the skills required for the next school year Test score improvement: children who participate in summer reading programs show an increase in vocabulary scores on standardized testing and an increase in comprehension scores The fun of reading for pleasure: participants explore current interests and discover new subjects by choosing what they want to read Recognition: participants set goals and track their progress online to earn a certificate of completion and other awards that may be offered Cost savings: participation in the program is free of charge Summer visits to the library help students and families rediscover all that the library offers - movies, music, activities, internet access, and more! Your support is invaluable You can support the summer reading program by bringing it to the attention of your students and their families and encouraging them to participate. 9 Promoting the 2009 Summer Reading Program Building on the success of last year s online media program, we are once again promoting the Summer Reading activities largely by the use of online banner ads. This year, however, we have switched from 100% use of newspaper web sites to use of a new behavioral targeting delivery system on yahoo.com. Using characteristics displayed by site visitors, Yahoo.com can help us target our ad towards online visitors who model parenting behavior in the course of searching and navigating on the site. This allows us to present our message to yahoo.com users who we know will have a much stronger than average interest in a reading program at a local library. In order to provide relatively the same exposure across the state in major markets, we have added newspaper sites to the schedule.
