It seemed to be an almost overdue tribute, when a unique flycatcher, formerly placed in Myiozetetes and then Conopias, was showed by Traylor to deserve monotypic status, re-classifying and re-naming the bird as Phelpsia inornata. Having a genus dedicated to somebody is a singular recognition, and this beautiful and quite distinctive endemic species seemed to me to be the only possible bird that I could consider as the icon for this singular and quite unique congress Robin Restall...Fue un tributo casi tardío cuando Traylor demostró que un atrapamoscas único, inicialmente clasificado como Myiozetetes y luego Conopias, merecía ser considerado un género monotípico, y lo reclasificó como Phelpsia inornata. Dedicar un género a alguien es un reconocimiento muy singular, y por la belleza y distinción de esta especie endémica, me pareció ser la única ave que podía considerar como símbolo de este singular y único congreso. The VIII th Neotropical Ornithological Congress honors the memory of two great ornithologists, William Henry Phelps and William H. Phelps, Jr William Henry Phelps , Kavanayén - Feb William Henry Phelps Jr , Ptari- Tepui - Jul Este equipo de padre e hijo formó la colección científica más completa de aves de Venezuela y la mejor biblioteca ornitológica de Latinoamérica, publicó la primera lista de aves de Venezuela y una de las primeras guías de aves de los países suramericanos, describió más de 250 especies y subespecies nuevas para la ciencia y desarrolló ampliamente la información existente sobre la distribución geográfica de las aves del norte de Suramérica. Juntos exploraron cada rincón de Venezuela; la tarea que padre e hijo se propusieron fue cumplida. This father-and-son team assembled Venezuela s most complete scientific collection of birds, as well as the best ornithological library in Latin America and the Caribbean, wrote the first list of birds ever published for Venezuela, and one of the first birds guides for countries of South America, described more than 250 species and subspecies new to science, and developed extensive information on the geographic distribution of the birds from northern South America. 11 GENERAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION Registration -Information Desk The Registration/Information Desk, run by Congrex our Congress organizer - is located in Salón Yarúa, in the main floor of the Conference area. Registration hours are 2:00 pm 7:00 pm Sunday 8:00 am 5:00 pm Monday and Tuesday. Receipts and certificates of participation Receipts and certificates of presentation and participation are in your registration materials. If you have a question or problem with your receipt, identification tag or certificates, please inform personnel at the Registration Desk. They will be glad to take care of any problem. Message board A message board will be set up near the exhibitors' area in Salón Pachá. Coffee Breaks Coffee breaks will be held in the upper floor. Internet Wireless internet is available in some of the common areas of Hotel Morichal Largo, as well as in all rooms. There is also a small paid -internet café in the hotel lobby. In addition, you will be able to find internet cafés (and international call centers) in Maturín without difficulty. Exhibitors Please visit our exhibitors in Salón Pachá. Field trips The field trips on Thursday will leave from Hotel Morichal Largo, but stops will be made at Avenida Bicentenario to pick up passengers from Hotels Luciano Jr., Emperador, and Friuli. Box breakfasts and box lunches will be provided in Tours 1 and 3 (early departure), but only box lunches in Tours 2 and 4 (late arrival). Silent Auction UVO is holding a silent auction all day Wednesday in Salón Yarúa. The single item to be auctioned is an original painting by reknowned bird artist Robin Restall (author of the Birds of Northern South America and Munias and Mannikins ). The painting portrays a study of the endemic Whitebearded Flycatcher (Phelpsia inornata), the icon of the meeting. Base price for this beautiful painting is US$ The auction opens at 10:00 am and closes at 6:00 pm sharp. Profits will support UVO. Bidding will take place during the designated time period by adding one's name and bid to the form. Further instructions will be posted. Posters Posters will be displayed from 12:00 h Monday to 12:00 h Saturday in Salón Pachá. Double face tape will be provided. The poster reception will be held on Wednesday night from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Please plan on being by your poster(s) during this period. Neither the participating societies nor the Local Committee are responsible for any posters left after 12:00 on Saturday. Audio-visual instructions The preview room, Salón Amana, will be available Sunday May 13 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm during the rest of the week until Friday. On Saturday it will operate from 8:00 to 12:00 h only. This room hosts a computer in which you can preview your PowerPoint presentations. A CD-burner and technical assistance will be available in the preview room. Speakers are asked to use PowerPoint presentations. No slide or overhead projectors are available. You will not be permitted to hook up your own laptop to give your talk. You must bring 1

12 your presentation on a Pen-drive or CD-ROM. These will be loaded by the projectionist onto a master computer in the room where you are scheduled to speak. Name the file with the last name of the first author and the day and time of the presentation (e.g., miyaki-tues_2:30). Speakers presenting before lunch must deliver their presentations to the projectionists by 18:00 the day before the presentation. Speakers presenting in the afternoon must deliver their presentations to the projectionists by 09:45 on the morning of the presentation. Do not deliver your presentation to the projectionist during the break prior to your session or during the lunch break. Speakers presenting Monday morning must deliver their presentations on Sunday, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. QUIET PLEASE! WE ASK YOU NOT TO CONGREGATE IN THE HALLWAYS OUTSIDE THE MEETING ROOMS. PLEASE DO NOT TALK AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE HALLWAYS WHEN SESSIONS ARE DEVELOPING. Recesos Los recesos, con café y jugo, serán en la planta alta del piso principal del área del congreso. Internet La conexión inalámbrica a internet está disponible en algunas de las áreas comunes del Hotel Morichal Largo, así como en todas las habitaciones. También hay un pequeño café internet (pago) en el lobby del hotel. Adicionalmente, no es difícil encontrar pequeños café-internet (y centros de llamadas telefónicas internacionales) en Maturín. Exhibidores Por favor, visite a nuestros exhibidores en el Salón Pachá. Salidas de campo Las salidas de campo del Jueves saldrán del Hotel Morichal Largo, pero harán paradas en la Av. Bicentenario para recoger a los pasajeros de los hoteles Luciano Jr., Emperador y Friuli. Se proveerá de desayunos y almuerzos tipo pic-nic a los participantes de los Tours 1 y 3 (salida temprano), pero sólo almuerzos a los de los Tours 2 y 4 (regreso tardío). 2

13 Subasta silenciosa UVO realizará una subasta silenciosa el Miércoles durante todo el día en el Salón Yarúa. El único objeto a ser subastado es una pintura original del renombrado artista de aves Robin Restall (autor de Birds of Northern South America and Munias and Mannikins ). La pintura es un estudio del Atrapamoscas Barbiblanco (Phelpsia inornata), especie endémica y emblema del congreso. El precio base de esta hermosa pintura es de US$ 1000, o su equivalente en Bolívares. La subasta comenzará a las 10:00 am y cierra a las 6 pm en punto. Las ganancias serán a beneficio de UVO. Las ofertas tendrán lugar en el lapso designado, agregando el nombre del ofertante y la cantidad ofrecida en un formato preestablecido. Se darán más instrucciones durante el congreso. Carteles Los carteles serán exhibidos desde el Lunes a las 12:00 h hasta el Sábado a las 12:00 h en el Salón Pachá. Se proveerá de cinta adhesiva doble faz para adherir los posters a los paneles. La recepción de carteles será el Miércoles en la noche desde las 6:30 pm hasta las 8:00 pm. Por favor, planifique para estar en su cartel durante ese período. Ni las sociedades participantes ni el comité organizador local serán responsables por los carteles dejados expuestos después del Sábado a las 12:00 h. Instrucciones audio-visuales Tendremos el Salon Amana para la pre-visualización de las ponencias. El horario del Domingo será desde las 3:00 pm a las 8:00 pm, y desde las 8:00 am a las 6:00 pm durante el resto de la semana hasta el Viernes. Se dispondrá de un quemador de CD y habrá asistencia técnica permanente. Se les solicita a los ponentes utilizar presentaciones en formato PowerPoint. No estarán disponibles proyectores de diapositivas ni de transparencias. No estará permitido conectar su computadora personal para su ponencia. Debe traer su presentación en un pen-drive o CD. Ésta será cargada por el proyeccionista en una computadora en el salón donde se realice cada presentación. Nombre el archivo con el apellido del primer autor y el día y la hora de la presentación (ejemplo: miyaki-mar_ 2:30). Los ponentes que presenten antes del mediodía deben entregar sus presentaciones al proyeccionista antes de las 6:00 pm del día antes de su presentación. Los ponentes que presenten en la tarde deben entregar sus presentaciones al proyeccionista antes de las 9:30 de la mañana de su presentación. No entregue su presentación durante el receso antes de su sesión o durante el almuerzo.
