3 We Give Thanks! This Thursday we pause again as a nation to give thanks for God s blessings upon our country, church, families and ourselves! I am sure all of us can find things to be thankful for, even though a lot of times we get overly involved in complaining about things! I am looking for a couple of people to share what they are thankful for, at the homily time, on Thanksgiving Day. Please give me a call (Fr. Friedl) at We give thanks to the Lord for all His goodness! ************************************************************* Another way to show our thanks on Thanksgiving Day is to attend Mass and bring along cans or boxes of nonspoilable food and put it in the special collection baskets at the Offertory. Please hold onto it until the Offertory! Money donations are always welcome! The needy thank you! ************************************************************* Please remember your beloved dead can still be signed up for prayer in the rest of November. You can enroll them in the Purgatorial Society in one of the All Soul s Day envelopes or put their names in the Memorial Book at the back of church. We pray for both groups! ************************************************************* All Eucharistic Ministers and Care Ministers of Holy Communion please be ready for your re-commissioning on Dec. 2nd and Dec. 9th, depending on what day you signed up for! English speakers will be commissioned at 9am Mass on Dec. 2nd and 11am Mass on Dec. 9th. Spanish speakers will be commissioned at 12:30pm Mass on both days. The diocese requires that everyone be re-commissioned every three years! We thank all of you for your ministry to the people of Sacred Heart! ************************************************************* We finally got our Postcommunion Thanksgiving Prayers ready for the Year of Sunday Mass. We will say them on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month because we have missed half the year! The prayers give God thanks for the Holy Eucharist (Mass) in the name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, because all salvation comes through Him!!! Fr. We thank You for all the countless gifts that grace our lives & continually delight & surprise us, especially our family & friends. Loving God, today & every day, help us remember that Thanksgiving is first thanks & then giving. Amen. Join us! Bring a friend! CLOTHING DRIVE We will have our monthly clothing drive next weekend, November 24/25. Clothes will be taken to Catholic Charities. Let s continue our efforts to help those in need of clothing. May God bless you for supporting this Ministry! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION New religious faith gives fresh lenses for viewing human customs, & the wisdom to transform them. In the ancient world, the Romans feared the dead. Funeral customs were designed to hasten the departure of souls to the next world. Cremation was the rule, although burial increased in popularity in the second century. Procession from the place of death to the place of cremation or burial was the most important part of the funeral. Those who carried the funeral bier carried it low, close to the ground, to promote the soul s departure to the nether world. Christians, on the other hand, did not fear the dead, but cherished them as they consigned them to Christ s love & protection. Gradually, they began to reject customs rooted in fear. Christians carried their dead to their resting places singing, with the bier carried high, away from the ground & toward the heavens. For the Christian, the grave was a sign of hope & a place of remembrance. Superstitious Romans feared burial places, & so the Christians cherished them as places of remembrance & prayer, & in time, even celebrated the Eucharist there. In November, many of us visit the cemetery for prayer & the autumn clean-up. By cherishing our dead, we are responding in faith to a vital part of our Christian tradition. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The Book of Remembrance (Names of the Dead) is now at the rear of church in the gathering space. You may write the names of your loved ones, family & friends in the book & they will be remembered in our Mass & prayers. Padre Friedl
