4 CORPUS CHRISTI, EL PASO 4a IGLESIA VIVA Todos aprendimos durante la escuela primaria que un sustantivo es una persona, lugar objeto o cosa o acción. Correr es un sustantivo que describe la actividad de un deportista en las pasadas Olimpiadas. Una manzana es un sustantivo, al igual que Washington, no importa si te refieres a Jorge o D.C. (o el estado, la calle en varias ciudades o en un billete). Todos son Washington. La mayoría del tiempo, aprendemos la palabra después de entender el significado. Los niños entienden que una fruta roja y redonda es una manzana, o podrá ser un tomate. Sin embargo, si hay una ocasión donde el nombre viene primero: el nombramiento de un bebe. Nosotros le ponemos el nombre muchas de las veces un nombre que tiene un significado especial sin saber en verdad si él bebe crecerá a cumplir el significado del nombre. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús en nombrado. Sus discípulos recuentan los diferentes nombres que la gente piensa que aplican a Él. Algunas personas piensan que él es Juan el Bautista porque enfrenta a los Fariseos como Juan lo solía hacer. Otro pensaban que él era Elías por que defiende a los pobres de los ricos y poderosos, como lo hacía ese profeta. Y otros pensaban que él era otro profeta del pasado, por la forma en que proclamaba la palabra de Dios. Pero Pedro lo nombra Cristo, el ungido de Dios. Este es un título que se viene después de lo hecho, pues el Evangelio fue escrito treinta años después de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús. No podemos esperar a que nuestros hijos o hijas crezcan para poderles poner nombre. Nosotros los llamamos por el nombre que escogimos antes de su nacimiento. Pero, por la formación de nuestra fe debemos enseñarles, a que su nombre tiene un significado especial y que deben vivir con la virtud del bautizo para poder cumplir. 5 4a September 13, 2015 A LIVELY CHURCH We all learned in elementary school that a noun is anything that names a person, place, object, thing, or action. Running is a noun when it describes the activity of sprinters at this past summer's Olympics. Apple is a noun; so is Washington, whether you mean George or DC (or for that matter state, a street in many towns, or a dollar bill). They are all Washingtons. Most of the time, we learn the word for the item after we understand what it is. As children we learn that one round, red fruit is called an apple, while another one is called a tomato. There is at least one occasion in which the name comes first: the naming of a child. We give a name-often a name that has special meaning-without really knowing if this child will truly g r o w i n t o t h e m e a n i n g o f t h a t n a m e. In the Gospel today Jesus is being named. His disciples recount the different names that people think apply to him. Some think he's John the Baptist because he takes on the Pharisees like John used to do. Others think he may be Elijah because he stands up for the poor against the powerful as that prophet did. Still others think that he's one of the other prophets from the past, speaking the word of God as they did. Peter names him the Christ, the anointed of God. It's a title that comes after the fact, put down when the Gospel was written thirty years after the death and resurrection of Jesus. We can't wait until our sons and daughters are full grown before we decide on a name for them. We call them from birth by whatever name we choose for them. But through formation in the faith we strive to help them see that there is a name that they carry and one that they must live up to by virtue of their baptism. That name is "Christian."
