2 WHAT S A YUTE? My Cousin Vinny was a movie I thoroughly enjoyed. If you had not lived in the South or the Northeast, there were two questions in the script that stood out. The judge wanted to know from Danny DeVito (defense attorney), what s a yute (youth)? And when DeVito went to breakfast early in the morning at the local diner, he inquired of the waitress, what s a grit? Knowledge of life is many times determined by our own personal experiences, of how and where we have lived. A government cares for its people because all of its citizens pay taxes. Yet, the news reports of a commissioner that has not paid property taxes in nine years or of a frequent visitor to the White House that owes back taxes to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. So what is a taxpayer? A parent calls the parish office to inquire as to why their child is not being offered the subsidized parish rate in our parochial school. After all I give money, do I not? We see rare Mass attendance. Oh! So, what is a parishioner? I am a parishioner, because I was married at St. James four years ago. No, that simply shows the hospitality of the Cathedral that opened its door to you and your spouse four years ago. I am a parishioner. because my grandparents donated one of the stain glass windows during the restoration. That speaks of their generous heart; it does not imply anything about you. How does a pastor know how many families or single homes he has in his flock? How large a flock is he responsible for? How large a church does he need or how many Masses to schedule on a weekend? How many hours to set aside for hospital or home visitation? A parishioner that registers either in person or online, that reads the bulletin or uses a tithing envelope, this is helpful information for a pastor to ascertain how many of God s people are under his care. How else would he know? Quite often I become aware of how many people think of themselves as parishioners when they are in need of a letter to be a godparent out of state or fill out a registration form in the elevator. So what is a citizen, a taxpayer or a parishioner? Surely I am not one simply because I say so? Surely my actions speak louder than words? Surely the words of Jesus sound loud and clear? Not those who say Father, Father, will enter the kingdom of God, but those who do the will of my Father. So what is a parishioner? Please register, so I will know something about your pastoral needs. Come regularly to Mass, so you are a live member of our community, Play your part through your contribution of time and resources, so we can attend to all our mutual needs. 3 WELCOME DEACON MARTIN NGUYEN We are happy to welcome seminarian Martin Nguyen to the Cathedral for the summer. Martin was born in Bien Hoa, Vietnam and arrived in the United States in He graduated from Dr. Phillip s High School and received a BA in Philosophy from St. John Vianney College Seminary in He is currently enrolled in St. Vincent de Paul Seminary and was ordained as a Transitional Deacon on April 18 of this year. We look forward to having Martin on our campus for the summer and know you will warmly welcome him! BABY BOTTLE COLLECTION Remember to bring back the baby bottles you took home and filled with your spare change last weekend. 4 Kathleen Elbert, parishioner and talented Soprano, will be singing in a recital on Saturday, May 23 at 5:30 PM in the Cathedral. Kathleen is a junior at Rollins College where she is majoring in voice performance. She has been a featured soloist in our Young Artists of Orlando Concert as well as in Faure s Requiem performed at St. James. She is currently a member of the Bach Festival Choir of Winter Park and of St. James Cathedral Choir. All are welcome! S O A R Saints On A Road Upcoming SOAR Events Sunday, May 17 Last SOAR until summer from 6-8 PM in the Social Hall, a light dinner will be shared. ORDINATION Most Reverend John Noonan, Bishop of Orlando, by the imposition of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit will ordain to the Order of Priesthood transitional deacons Joshua Swallows & Christopher Dorsey On Saturday, May 23, 10 AM at St. James Cathedral. The faithful are invited to join in the celebration. Their ordination is the culminating event in a seven-year journey to serve and minister to God s people. The Mass will be live streamed at

5 ANNUAL CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION Bishop John Noonan invites you to the Diocese of Orlando's annual Corpus Christi procession on Sunday, June 7, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Join Catholics from across the Diocese of Orlando to publicly express our belief in Jesus Christ, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. Bishop Noonan will lead the procession at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe (please note the change in venue) as participants pray, sing and reflect on the Mystery of the Most Holy Eucharist. The procession following the 6 PM Mass. Bishop Noonan and participants will pray at Eucharistic Altars of Repose highlighting the music and traditions of various ethnic communities in the Diocese of Orlando. This will be a joyous celebration that will unite our Catholic community as we publicly express our faith in the Eucharist, the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. 6 Qué es yute? My Cousin Vinny fue una película que disfruté mucho. Si no has vivido en el sur o en el noreste, hay dos preguntas que sobresalen en el libreto. El juez quiere saber de parte de Danny DeVito (el abogado defensor), qué es un yute (joven), y cuando DeVito fue a desayunar temprano en la mañana en un restaurante local le preguntó a la mesera qué es grit. El conocimiento de la vida muchas veces es determinado por nuestras experiencias personales en cómo y dónde hemos vivido. Un gobierno se preocupa por su pueblo porque sus ciudadanos pagan impuestos. Aún, las noticias reportan a un comisionado que no ha pagado impuestos en nueve años o un visitante frecuente en la Casa Blanca que debe cientos de miles de dólares en impuestos. Así que, qué es un contribuyente? Un padre llama a la oficina de la parroquia para preguntar porque a su hijo no se le ofreció la tarifa de subsidio parroquial en nuestra escuela parroquial, después de todo yo hago donaciones, no? Vemos que casi no asiste a Misa. Oh, entonces, qué es un parroquiano? Soy un parroquiano porque hace cuatro años me casé en St. James. Cuántas horas debe separar para visitar a los enfermos al hospital o las casas? Un parroquiano que se registra en persona o en línea, que lee el boletín o utiliza el sobre, hace que esta información sea de ayuda para que el párroco sepa cuantas personas del pueblo de Dios están bajo su cuidado. Cómo más podemos saber? Muy a menudo me doy cuenta de cuantas personas se ven como parroquianos cuando necesitan una carta para ser padrinos fuera del estado o para que se les llene un formulario. Entonces qué es un ciudadano, un contribuyente o un parroquiano? Estás seguro que no lo soy sólo porque yo lo digo? Seguro que mis acciones hablan más que mis palabras. Seguro que las palabras de Jesús fueron claras y fuertes. No aquellos que dicen Señor, Señor entrarán en el Reino de Dios, sino el que hace la voluntad de mi Padre. Entonces qué es un parroquiano? Por favor regístrense para conocer cuáles son sus necesidades Vengan regularmente a Misa para que sean un miembro vivo de nuestra comunidad y jueguen su parte en la contribución de recursos para que podamos atender nuestras necesidades mutuas. No es tan complicado, eso espero!
