1 August 20, 2015 Dear Families of KIPP Heritage, We have been thoroughly enjoying meeting and working with your students, both new KIPPsters, over the past week. This week, students have begun traveling in their assigned homerooms/colleges to their six classes: Math, Music, P.E., Reading/Writing, Science, and Social studies. As the school day extends to being four hours longer than our students have experienced thus far, we highly recommend plenty of sleep in order for our KIPPsters to be here by 7:45AM each day. Team & Family Handbook: Please read our student and family handbook to learn about our school policies and your rights as a parent/guardian at KIPP Heritage Academy. We require that all families submit a Team & Family Handbook Acknowledgment form and Technology Agreement (found at the back of the handbook) by August 24, 2015 in order for students to receive their second free uniform shirt for students to begin using Chromebooks. Materials: Students should come to school every day with the following materials: Backpack with materials provided by the school: Agenda ($5 to replace. Students should not decorate or write on the covers.) Homework binder (If purchasing a new binder, please ensure it is the same size and color as the given binder.) Notebooks or binders for classes 5 sharpened pencils Zippered pencil pouch Completed homework KIPP Heritage uniform A book for independent reading Students are also encouraged to bring the following materials from home: 1 handheld pencil sharpener in a plastic, zip-lock bag 1 eraser 1 gluestick If any materials are distracting to students learning, they will be confiscated and returned only to the parent or guardian upon their request. 2 Items to be left at home: To ensure students stay focused on their academics while at school, the following items are not allowed on campus: Gum Soda or coffee Weapons or any toy weapons Permanent markers of any kind Candy, chips, or other unhealthy foods Any illegal substance Electronics such as ipods and games Pens Homework and Classwork Completion Homework completion, during summer school and beyond, is extremely important. Each day, students write their homework for every class. Please ensure that your child completes his/her homework every night, and that a parent/guardian signs the child s agenda every night. The agenda and homework are meant to teach our students the responsibility and organizational skills they will need to be successful in college and beyond. During the school year, students who do not complete their homework will be required to complete it during recess and, if necessary, lunch. Students who do not complete classwork will be required to complete work after school. First Day of the School Year On Monday, August 24 th, students will begin their full-day schedule. Major things to note as we begin the school year are: Students should be in full uniform: KIPP Heritage polo shirt tucked into khaki bottoms with comfortable shoes. A non-kipp sweater or jacket is permissible, but students will be required to remove their jacket when indoors. KIPP cardigans are allowed at all times and can be purchased from the main office for $25. Please note that if students are to wear a shirt under their uniform polo shirt, these shirts must be plain black, white, or grey. The undershirts may not be excessively large and may not have hoods. Students can arrive as early as 7:20am in order to eat breakfast in the cafeteria. Breakfast is available until 7:35am. Students should be in their college homeroom seats and ready to learn at 7:45AM. Students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to eat during recess. Students may also bring lunch if they are not going to eat school lunch from the cafeteria. Students should be picked up at 4:00PM. There will be no adult supervision beyond 4:15PM. Students in the afterschool program should be picked up at 6:00PM. Back to School Night September 2 from 5:30-7:30PM Save the date for our Back to School Night! KIPPsters and their families are invited to attend our Back to School Night on September 2 nd from 5:30-7:30PM!
