3 July 12, 2015 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Amos 7:12-15 Psalm 85 Ephesians 1:3-14 or 1:3-10 Mark 6:7-13 The prophet Amos is the first classical prophet we encounter in the Bible. A citizen of the southern kingdom of Judah, he prophesies in the northern kingdom of Israel. Delivering a message of judgment and doom, he is rejected by Amaziah, priest of Bethel (v 10), a shrine in the north. Amaziah says to Amos, Off with you flee to the land of Judah! never again prophesy in Bethel (vv 12, 13). But the prophet states that he is only doing the will of the Lord, who took me from following the flock and sent him to prophesy to my people Israel (v 15). Amos speaks not his own words but the words of the LORD. The letter to the Ephesians is generally attributed to a disciple of Paul, writing after the apostle s death. Our author, writing in Paul s name, reminds the church in Ephesus that God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (v 3) and that we have redemption by his blood (v 7). This is the plan of God, a plan intended to bring us redemption as God s possession (v 14). Over the next few weeks readings, the letter will elaborate on how God s plan is realized. Discipleship is not just about learning; it is also about doing. In today s Gospel, Jesus sends out his disciples two by two (v 7). Their task mirrors his mission they are sent to preach repentance, heal the sick, and drive out demons. Like the prophets of old, they will encounter a mixed reception: some will welcome them; others will reject them. The experience of the first disciples mirrors the experience of the ministers of the word in Mark s day as well. God s word always encounters a mixed reception. For Reflection: What is my response to God s word when I find it challenging? Does the fact that the prophets and apostles sometimes met rejection help me in my faith journey? From the beginning of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, members visit in pairs two by two, those who are poor and needy in their homes. It is there, in the family setting, that Vincentians listen, offer humble advice, and render assistance. Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St Vincent de Paul? URGENT!!!! If you can donate some time to assist in this ministry, please call the parish office at Weekly Stewardship Scripture Reflections Today s readings are about being chosen and sent. The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord and sent to use his talents for the people or God. The Gospel recounts the story of the sending of the twelve. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us that we, too, are chosen. For what have I been chosen? To whom have I been sent? Back Pack Program More than 21 million children qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the Na onal School Lunch Program and the Na on al School Breakfast Program. For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend? Our parish has been helping children get the nutri ous and easy-to-prepare food they need to get enough to eat on the weekends. Through your generosity we have been filling bags for students at one our local elementary schools. Last year your response was so overwhelming that we went from helping 3 students to doing 7 bags a week. As the beginning of the school year is fast approaching we are asking for your help now so we can stock up to begin the first week of school. Listed below are items we are in need of: Canned chicken or tuna, peanut bu er, jelly, individual pkgs. of Mac and Cheese, chicken noodle soup, individual boxes of cereals, Chef Boyardee small variety cups, Small packets of raisins. 5 Introducing Our New Pastor, Father Ignacio Morales Fr. Ignacio was born and raised in a small town located in South Guanajuato, north of México City. Fr. Ignacio is the youngest of nine children, five brothers, and four sisters. He a ended the Diocesan Seminary at San Jose de la Montaña in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico where he did High School and College. Fr. Ignacio came to the USA in 2002, and began studying English, first in El Paso, Texas, then at Georgia State University and at St. Joseph Seminary College in Louisiana. He stayed for four years in the USA and then went back to Mexico City to complete his theology at the Pon fical University. He returned to be ordained as a Deacon on May 24, 2008 and served, as transi onal deacon, at St. Vincent de Paul in Dallas, GA. Fr. Ignacio was ordained as a Priest on June 27, 2009 at the Cathedral of Christ the King. He was then appointed as his first assignment to Prince of Peace Catholic Church. For the last 5 years, he was the Parochial Vicar at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Cumming, Ga. Presentando a nuestro nuevo Párroco, Padre Ignacio Morales El padre Ignacio nació y se crio en un pequeño pueblo situado en el sur de Guanajuato, al norte de la ciudad de México. El Padre Ignacio es el más joven de nueve hijos, cinco hermanos y cuatro hermanas. El Padre Ignacio llegó a Estados Unidos en el año 2002 y comenzó a estudiar inglés, primero en El Paso, Texas, luego en la Universidad de Georgia y en la Universidad del Seminario de San José (St. Joseph Seminary College ) en Luisiana. Vivió durante cuatro años en Estados Unidos y luego regresó a la ciudad de México para completar su teología en la Universidad Pon fical de la ciudad de México. Regresó para ser ordenado como diácono el 24 de mayo del 2008 y sirvió como diácono transitorio, en San Vicente de Paúl en Dallas, GA. El Padre Ignacio fue ordenado como sacerdote el 27 de junio del 2009 en la Catedral de Cristo Rey. Su primera asignación fue en la Iglesia Católica de El Príncipe De Paz. Durante los úl mos 5 años ha servido como Vicario Parroquial en la Iglesia Católica Del Buen Pastor en Cumming, Georgia.

6 Introducing Our New Parochial Vicar, Father Mark Thomas I was born Dec. 1, 1961 in Holland, Michigan. In 1975, when I was 13, we moved to Douglasville. I attended 8th grade at Chapel Hill Middle School and then all four years of high school at Lithia Springs High, from which I graduated in After earning most of my credits at the University of Georgia, I completed a degree in economics at Georgia State University in I began a career as a high school Social Studies teacher in 1987 at Lakeshore High in College Park. In 1996, I embarked on a trip to Tokyo, Japan which lasted about 3 months. It is in Japan, where I earned money as an English teacher, that I rediscovered Catholicism from which I had fallen away after our family had left Michigan in Another grace-filled moment came with the call to go to New Orleans, Louisiana, which I did, in August 2006, I was named assistant principal at one of the city's PK-8 schools, Murray Henderson Elementary. During this year of my life, I spent an hour every Friday evening in front of the Blessed Sacrament at Holy Name of Jesus parish, which was not far from Notre Dame Seminary in Uptown New Orleans. It is really there, in the presence of Our Lord on those Friday nights when I would pray for the children of New Orleans, for my fellow educators, and for the recovery of the city itself, that my vocational call really began to establish itself. I began to see that God had brought me to New Orleans for more reasons than I might have realized. One day in 2008, I applied for admission to seminary formation with the Archdiocese of New Orleans. After about three years as a New Orleans seminarian, I began to discern that maybe God wanted me to come back home to North Georgia. With the permission of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, I became a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. As you get to know me, brothers and sisters, you will hear more about my life. I do have a wonderful family (2 brothers, 1 sister, 5 nephews, 4 nieces, 1 great nephew. My parents (married 54 years!) reside in Franklin, NC. I am the oldest of their four adult children. May you keep me in your prayers as I will keep you in mine during this exciting time of transition at SJV. Es realmente allí, ante la presencia de Nuestro Señor en las noches de los viernes cuando oraba por los niños de Nueva Orleans, por mis compañeros educadores y por la recuperación de la ciudad, que mi llamado vocacional realmente comenzó a establecerse. Comencé a ver que Dios me habían traído a Nueva Orleans por más razones de las que me imaginaba. Un día en el año 2008, solicité admisión a formación de seminario con la Arquidiócesis de Nueva Orleans. Luego de tres años como seminarista de Nueva Orleans, empecé a discernir que tal vez Dios me quería regresar al norte de Georgia. Con el permiso del Arzobispo Wilton Gregory, me convertí en un seminarista de la Arquidiócesis de Atlanta. Al conocerme y con el tiempo, hermanos y hermanas, les contare más acerca de mi vida. Tengo una familia maravillosa (2 hermanos, 1 hermana, 5 sobrinos, 4 sobrinas, 1 gran sobrino. Mis padres (casados 54 años!) residen en Franklin, NC. YO soy el mayor de sus cuatro hijos adultos. 7 Reasons to Become a Catechist Religious Education News Please remember that religious education is a life long and continuing process. If you had a child receive First Eucharist or Reconciliation this school year it is not the end or their learning about our faith, it is the expectation that they will return next school year. Also Mass attendance is not an option. We as Catholics attend Mass every week. If you do not attend Mass in the Summer your child misses all the beautiful stories of Jesus Christ s mission and more importantly they miss receiving the body and blood or our Lord Jesus Christ. You can register on line and pay on line this year. 1) You will grow in your own faith, learn the teachings of the Church, and deepen your relationship with Jesus. 2) Your baptism calls you to share in Jesus ministry. 3) Children, teens, and adults in today s world, more than ever, need to hear the Good News of Jesus. 4) Children, teens, and adults in today s world, more than ever, need to encounter good role models of faith. 5) You have much to share with those you ll teach and you ll have opportunities to share faith with other catechists. 6) Today s catechetical textbooks/resources offer outstanding support. 7) You ll be challenged, you ll have fun, and you ll make new friends. 8) You ll be helping people deepen their relationship with Jesus (you ll be evangelizing!) 9) You ll be handing on a 2000-year-old Tradition that changes lives. 10) It s our job: Jesus sent us to go and teach all nation.
