Medicine draws on technology for making diagnoses easier and backing up treatment. Radiology, prostheses and endoscopy are all examples of technology transfers into healthcare. GMV is contributing to this endeavor with two star products, one for applying simulation and virtual-reality technology to surgeon training in minimally invasive operations and the other for optimization of intraoperative radiotherapy. Another area of technology that is revolutionizing the healthcare sector is ICTs, connecting up all the health-system stakeholders, the patients and society at large. Information is thus becoming more accessible in terms of the patients medical records and the underlying scientific knowledge, while specialists can now also receive advice in the form of remote diagnoses. Spain is spearheading the implementation of these new services, partly thanks to companies like GMV that collaborate closely with healthcare professionals in the research and development of groundbreaking applications, adapting the new technologies to their needs. De todos los ámbitos en los que la tecnología puede contribuir a mejorar la calidad de vida, la sanidad es uno de los más importantes y universales. La medicina se vale de la tecnología para facilitar el diagnóstico y apoyar el tratamiento. La radiología, las prótesis, la endoscopia, son ejemplos de transferencias de tecnología al ámbito de la sanidad. GMV está contribuyendo con dos productos estrella para aplicar nuevas tecnologías de simulación y realidad virtual al entrenamiento de cirujanos en operaciones artroscópicas mínimamente invasivas y a la optimización de tratamientos de irradiación intraoperativa. Otra de las tecnologías que están revolucionando el sector sanitario son las TIC, conectando a todos los actores del sistema sanitario, los pacientes y la sociedad, haciendo más accesible tanto la información referente al historial clínico del paciente como la base de conocimiento científico y posibilitando la asesoría de especialistas mediante diagnóstico remoto. España es pionera en la implantación de estos nuevos servicios, gracias también a empresas que, como GMV, colaboran estrechamente con los profesionales del sector sanitario para investigar y desarrollar aplicaciones innovadoras adaptando las nuevas tecnologías a sus necesidades. 4 ARTÍCULO / ARTICLE LA SALUD CENTRO DE NUESTRA TECNOLOGÍA HEALTH, THE CENTER OF OUR TECHNOLOGY GMV S HEALTHCARE STRATEGY Telecommunications and information technologies, medical simulation and digital image processing are obviously all technologies offering healthcare professionals a whole new quiver of tools and resources to work with. In recent years information and communication technologies have also been taken up widely in the healthcare field. Electronic medical records, digital medical images and electronic prescriptions are all now here to stay in most of Spain s health services. GMV has been a trailblazer in various fields, either developing completely new technology or being the first to apply existing technology to new fields. In view of this, and in line with the firm s market-diversification and technologytransfer strategy adopted practically from the word go, GMV decided early on in the 21st century to invest heavily in the development of advanced products for the healthcare sector. As fruit of this strategy 2004 saw the birth of the first arthroscopy surgery training simulator insightarthrovr; two years later, in 2006, GMV decided to broaden its portfolio of products for the healthcare sector with radiance, an intraoperative radiotherapy planner, a groundbreaking and unique system in the world for improving the planning of intraoperative radiotherapy. In just a few years GMV has become one of the main stakeholders in this new technological venture, whose overall aim is better healthcare of the general population. This fundamental pursuit, moreover, is largely immune to vogues, crises and other switchback developments in today s society. In recent years, however, the healthcare sector has begun to spawn a huge volume of digital information, giving rise in turn to new needs and opportunities as yet uncovered: information security, ubiquity of medical records, availability of this data both for healthcare professionals and the public at large, georeferencing, interoperability, standardization, development of collaborative tools, simulators, decision-taking aids, applications and devices with a heavy R&D input. GMV has therefore gone down a different path from other firms involved in the healthcare sector, taking on a wide range of projects with great development potential. To do so it has aligned itself with some of the most important associations in the healthcare sector, such as HL7. HL7 (Health Level Seven) is a Standard Development Organization (SDO) for the healthcare sector. It operates at international level and its remit is to provide global standards for all healthcare domains in the interests of real interoperability between the information systems. In Spain it has been up and running since 2004 and HL7 Spain now boasts over 70 members, including the main software development firms and practically all the Spanish regions (Comunidades Autónomas), plus universities and other organizations. In the words of Carlos Gallego, President of HL7 Spain: In the Spanish healthcare model (with powers devolved to the regions) citizens are calling for new services, and new information technologies are now being ESTRATEGIA EN EL ENTORNO DE SANIDAD DE GMV Es evidente que las Tecnologías de la Información y Telecomunicaciones, la simulación médica o el tratamiento digital de imágenes son tecnologías que ofrecen nuevas oportunidades para mejorar significativamente los medios y técnicas de los profesionales de la Sanidad. Asimismo, el uso de las tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones en el ámbito de la salud ha tenido un gran desarrollo en los últimos años. La historia clínica electrónica, la imagen médica digital, la prescripción y receta electrónica son ya realidades en la mayoría de los servicios de salud de nuestro país. GMV ha sido pionera en muy variados campos, ya sea por desarrollar una nueva tecnología, o por aplicar de forma precursora tecnologías existentes a nuevos campos. Por ello y siguiendo con la estrategia de diversificación de mercados y transferencia tecnológica iniciada prácticamente desde su creación, en los primeros años del siglo XXI, GMV decide invertir en el desarrollo de productos avanzados en el sector de la sanidad. Fruto de esa estrategia, en 2004, nace el primer simulador para entrenamiento de cirugía artroscópica insightarthrovr y dos años más tarde, en 2006, GMV decide ampliar su cartera de productos para el sector Sanidad con radiance, un planificador del tratamiento de radioterapia intraoperatoria, sistema innovador y único en el mundo que permite una mejor planificación de la radioterapia intraoperatoria. En pocos años, GMV ha pasado a ser uno de los actores principales en este nuevo entorno tecnológico, cuyo fin es la mejor atención y el óptimo cuidado de los ciudadanos en una faceta fundamental como es la Salud, faceta que además está exenta de modas, crisis y otros avatares. Sin embargo, en los últimos años en el ámbito de la Salud, empieza a haber un importante volumen de información digital, surgen nuevas necesidades y oportunidades aún sin cubrir: seguridad de la información, ubicuidad de los datos clínicos, disponibilidad de esos datos tanto para los profesionales como para los ciudadanos, georeferenciación de los mismos, interoperabilidad, estandarización y normalización, desarrollo de herramientas colaborativas, simuladores, herramientas de ayuda a la toma de decisión, aplicaciones y dispositivos muy enmarcados en el I+D+i. GMV se desmarca de otras empresas involucradas en el sector sanitario abordando una interesante tipología de proyectos pendientes de potenciar. Para ello se ha posicionado al lado de algunas de las asociaciones de mayor relevancia en el sector sanitario como es el caso del HL7. HL7 (Health Level Seven) es una Organización de Desarrollo de Estándares (SDO), para el ámbito de la salud. Opera a nivel internacional y su misión es proveer de estándares globales para todos los dominios del ámbito de la salud con el fin de lograr una interoperabilidad real entre los sistemas de información. 5 implemented in the healthcare area. These two developments make system interoperability one of the main challenges to be tackled in coming years. This interoperability will be attained only if we work towards standardization of systems; here is where HL7Spain comes into its own and where GMV s participation is so clearly to the fore. One of the most interesting R&D-related healthcare-improvement projects that GMV has undertaken recently is Rehabilita. This is a 15-million-euro CENIT project funded by the Industrial Technology Development Center (CDTI in Spanish initials), with the aim of modifying the current system of cognitive, physical and cardiovascular therapies. The healthcare systems of developed countries are nowadays facing a series of sterling, epoch-making challenges. Increasing life expectancy together with a falling birth rate is leading to an aging of the population with a concomitant need for more rehabilitation. The population s lifestyle is also conducive to the development of chronic and degenerative illnesses and disabilities. Rehabilitation is very costly in two ways; firstly the state and hospitals have to bear the direct costs of in-hospital attention, depending on the length of the stay; secondly the state again and companies have to bear the indirect costs of the patient s productive downtime, which may be longer or shorter depending on the period of sick leave. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are one of the best ways of improving rehabilitation processes. They open up a wide range of possibilities for medical modernization: firstly, breakthroughs in devices and technology and, secondly, the design of rehabilitationbackup knowledge and service platforms. COLLABORATIVE HEALTHCARE Along the same lines GMV is well aware of the need to bring healthcare closer to the public and unite efforts to decentralize knowledge and bring it to wider notice. It has therefore developed diverse projects and products with precisely this overall aim in view: Secure Applications: GMV is applying its security experience to the development of applications with extremely strict security needs such as a Disease Registry of the Regional Health Ministry of Valencia (Conselleria de Sanitat de la Generalitat Valenciana). Confidence in applications of this type is crucial, so the applications developed and implemented by GMV use secure development techniques and are based on the strictest security standards, even allowing the detection of anomalous user behavior on the basis of common patterns. Internet access for hospital patients: GMV has designed secure wi-fi-based internet access systems allowing inpatients to access internet from any device by using the code on their identification wristband and date of birth, in a transparent manner for the whole hospital. This helps to make hospital stays easier to bear for one and all. Systems of this type have been set up in hospitals as important los nuevos servicios que requieren los ciudadanos, junto con el proceso de implantación de las tecnologías de la información en el ámbito de la salud, hacen la que interoperabilidad de los sistemas sea uno de los retos a alcanzar en los próximos años. Esta interoperabilidad sólo se podrá alcanzar si trabajamos para la normalización de los sistemas y es en este ámbito donde centra sus actividades HL7Spain y en donde la participación de GMV queda claramente reflejada. En su estrategia por mejorar los sistemas de atención sanitaria y siempre vinculado al I+D+i, uno de los proyectos más interesantes en el que se ha embarcado GMV recientemente ha sido, Rehabilita. Un proyecto CENIT financiado por el CDTI con 15 millones de euros, que tiene el objetivo de modificar el sistema actual de las terapias de rehabilitación cognitiva, física y cardiovascular. Hoy en día, los sistemas sanitarios de los países desarrollados se enfrentan a una serie de retos que están condicionando su evolución como es el envejecimiento de la población, debido al aumento de esperanza de vida, la disminución de la natalidad, que conlleva una creciente necesidad de rehabilitación o el estilo de vida de la población, que contribuye a un aumento de las patologías crónicas y degenerativas. El proceso de rehabilitación conlleva unos costes muy elevados, ya sean directos para el hospital o el Estado por estar asociados al número de días de ingreso en centro o indirectos desde la visión Estado o empresa, dado que el paciente deja de ser productivo dependiendo del número de días de su baja médica. Las Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones (TICs) se convierten en una interesante apuesta por las mejora de los procesos de rehabilitación y abren un amplio abanico de posibilidades para la modernización médica. Por un lado en la innovación en dispositivos y tecnología, y por otro, en el diseño de plataformas de servicios y conocimiento de apoyo a la rehabilitación. SANIDAD COLABORATIVA En esta misma línea, GMV, consciente de la necesidad de acercar la salud al resto de la sociedad y aunar esfuerzos por descentralizar el conocimiento para ampliar su difusión, ha desarrollado diversos proyectos y productos que permiten lograr este objetivo: Aplicaciones Seguras: GMV está aplicando su experiencia en Seguridad para el desarrollo de aplicaciones con altísimos requisitos de seguridad, tales como un registro de declaraciones de enfermedades de la Conselleria de Sanitat de la Generalitat Valenciana. 6 ARTÍCULO / ARTICLE as Valencia s Hospital Universitari La Fe and Castellón s Hospital La Magdalena. Setting up and Promoting Collaborative Communities: The public at large and the various healthcare groups are increasingly demanding interconnected and nimble working methods, allowing them to take decisions in a collaborative way. GMV has therefore been working for some years on the design and implementation of collaborative communities that allow healthcare professionals to work in a distributed way through multidisciplinary working groups and also to manage new collaborative initiatives and projects. GMV, mindful of the fact that platforms of this type need a high degree of participation to be useful, offers promotion services, acting as a nexus between users, encouraging collaboration and boosting the community s participation, communication and organization. One of the most important benchmarks here is the work carried out in the creation of the New Galicia Plan on Addictive Disorders (Nuevo Plan de Galicia sobre Trastornos Adictivos), where GMV s goal is to boost citizen collaboration and involve the various stakeholders both within the platform itself and in other social networking sites. MONITORING AND SUPERVISION OF CRITICAL PATIENTS IN TRANSIT Medical error is currently one of the main causes of death in dealing with critical patients. This problem is exacerbated when we factor in budgetary restrictions and the shortage of skilled healthcare staff, which mean that patients being taken to hospital in mobile ICUs usually lack this crucial attention until arrival at the hospital itself. GMV and the foundation called Fundación Parc Taulí are working jointly to solve this problem. Parc Taulí is inputting its knowledge of the standardization of clinical parameters and generation of intelligent alarms while GMV is inputting its expertise in security, communications, control and positioning systems. The upshot of this joint work will be a remote monitoring system set up in the hospitals together with equipment fitted in the mobile ICUs for acquisition and synchronization of biomedical signals, generation of intelligent alarms, real time data- voice- and image-transmission. There will also be a control center for geotracking and management of communications between the mobile ICUs and the hospitals. The intelligent integration of biomedical data in a single platform and the possibility of making remote diagnoses represent a real breakthrough in the treatment of critical patients and decision-taking by the medical staff, with the consequent possibility of saving the patients lives. TECNOVA SALUS PROMOTING PATIENT SAFETY WITH TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH RESULTS GMV s technological development of clinical applications is based on the search for groundbreaking solutions that enhance patient safety. This involves two major lines of research: 3D anatomical modeling for virtual-reality simulation used in the training of minimally invasive surgery skills and the processing of digital medical images for surgical planning. Patient safety is top priority nowadays in all agendas of health authorities worldwide. In this context GMV is leading the ENTEPRASE project (Research into image-guided processing and simulation technology for safe medical practice). This is a 5-million-euro Singular Strategic Project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and ERDF and involving twelve institutions: five medical research centers, five public universities and two companies. The project activities will be brought to confianza en este tipo de aplicaciones es clave, las aplicaciones que GMV desarrolla e implanta utilizan técnicas de desarrollo seguro y están basadas en los estándares de seguridad más exigentes, lo que permite incluso detectar comportamientos anómalos de los usuarios sobre patrones comunes. Acceso a Internet para pacientes hospitalarios: GMV ha diseñado sistemas de acceso seguro a internet mediante wifi, que permiten a los pacientes ingresados acceder a Internet desde cualquier dispositivo, utilizando el código de su pulsera de identificación y su fecha de nacimiento de forma transparente para el hospital, amenizando su estancia en el centro. Este tipo de sistemas está implantado en hospitales tan representativos como el de La Fe, de Valencia o en el de la Magdalena de Castellón. Implantación y dinamización de Comunidades Colaborativas: La sociedad en general y los distintos colectivos del mundo de la salud demandan cada vez más la posibilidad de trabajar de forma ágil y conectada, pudiendo tomar decisiones de forma colaborativa. En este sentido, GMV lleva varios años diseñando pag. 6 I GMV NEWS nº44 abril 2010 e implantando comunidades colaborativas que permiten a los profesionales de la salud trabajar de forma distribuida a través de grupos de trabajo multidisciplinares, así como gestionar nuevas iniciativas y proyectos colaborativos. GMV, consciente de que este tipo de plataformas necesitan un alto grado de participación para resultar útiles, ofrece servicios de dinamización. Estos servicios suponen actuar como nexo de unión entre los usuarios, potenciando la colaboración y aumentando la participación, comunicación y organización de la comunidad. Una de las referencias más relevantes en este sentido es la del trabajo realizado en la creación del Nuevo Plan de Galicia sobre Trastornos Adictivos, donde GMV tiene como meta obtener la colaboración de los ciudadanos e involucrar a los distintos actores tanto dentro de la plataforma como en otras redes sociales. MONITORIZACIÓN Y SUPERVISIÓN DE PACIENTES CRÍTICOS EN MOVILIDAD Actualmente, la atención a pacientes críticos tiene en el error médico una de las principales causas de muerte. Este problema se agrava aún más si tenemos en cuenta que durante el desplazamiento de estos pacientes en UCIs móviles, tanto la falta de personal sanitario cualificado como los problemas presupuestarios, hacen que en muchas ocasiones no se cuente con la atención médica requerida hasta la recepción del paciente en el centro asistencial. GMV y la Fundación Parc Taulí, trabajan conjuntamente para resolver esta problemática. Parc Taulí aportando su conocimiento en la normalización de parámetros clínicos y generación de alarmas inteligentes y GMV a través de su experiencia en el ámbito de la seguridad, comunicaciones, sistemas de control y posicionamiento. El resultado estará compuesto por un sistema de monitorización ubicado en los Centros Sanitarios; equipamiento en las UCIs móviles para la adquisición, sincronización de señales biomédicas, generación de alamas inteligentes, transmisión de datos, voz e imágenes en tiempo real; y un centro de control para la geolocalización y gestión de comunicaciones entre las UCIs Móviles y Centros Sanitarios. La integración inteligente de datos biomédicos en una única plataforma y la posibilidad de realizar su diagnóstico a distancia, se convierte en una novedosa

Under this project papers will be given on the technology to be developed in the project and their value in obviating adverse effects for patients. PROVIDING TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS FOR SAFE LEARNING OF MODERN SURGICAL TECHNIQUES Practical medical training looms large in the Bologna Process. This training has to be active and structured. The results of GMV s research into virtualreality-based solutions for safe learning of modern surgical techniques, now to be phased into the insight simulation platform, will facilitate standardization of specialized medical training syllabi and objective assessment of this training. This technological development will enable an international model of specialized medical training and accreditation to be set up on solely scientific grounds. OPTIMIZING TREATMENT FOR CANCER PATIENTS Elsewhere, the simulation of medical cases by the radiation oncologist using GMV s radiance technology helps to optimize intraoperative radiotherapy (IOR). This is done by studying the various therapy alternatives and reaching an agreement with the surgeon on the most important aspects, especially the radiation doses. Another improvement on the current IOR protocol is the possibility of documenting results on a quantitative basis. In times of crisis any technological investments that help to cut training times and streamline medical practice have an unquestionable value. The system will have many knock-on benefits for the health system itself: fewer adverse effects, a greater volume of medical practice and higher satisfaction levels among both patients and health professionals. contribución para la mejora del tratamiento de pacientes críticos y la toma de decisiones del personal sanitario, con la consiguiente posibilidad de salvar su vida. TECNOVA SALUS PROMOVIENDO LA SEGURIDAD CLÍNICA CON RESULTADOS DE INVESTIGACIÓN TECNOLÓGICA El desarrollo tecnológico de aplicaciones clínicas en GMV se basa en la búsqueda de soluciones innovadoras que mejoren la seguridad del paciente. En este sentido, hay dos grandes líneas de investigación: el modelado anatómico tridimensional para la simulación basada en realidad virtual orientada a la formación en técnicas quirúrgicas mínimamente invasivas y el tratamiento de la imagen médica digital para la planificación quirúrgica. Hoy en día la sensibilización hacia la seguridad del paciente es una prioridad en las agendas de todas las autoridades sanitarias a nivel mundial. En este contexto, GMV lidera el proyecto ENTEPRASE (Investigaciones en Tecnologías de Tratamiento Guiado por Imagen y Simulación para una Práctica Clínica Segura). Se trata de un Proyecto Singular Estratégico, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Fondos FEDER, que con un presupuesto total próximo a los 5 millones de euros, involucra a doce instituciones: cinco centros de investigación clínica, cinco universidades públicas y dos empresas. La difusión de las actividades realizadas en el proyecto se realizará bajo el lema TECNOVA SALUS: Tecnología Innovadora para la seguridad clínica. En el marco del proyecto se impartirán comunicaciones que versarán sobre el interés de las tecnologías a desarrollar en el proyecto y su valor en la prevención de efectos adversos para el paciente. PROPORCIONANDO SOLUCIONES TECNOLÓGICAS PARA EL APRENDIZAJE SEGURO DE LAS TÉCNICAS QUIRÚRGICAS MODERNAS En línea con el proceso de Bolonia, las actividades prácticas en la formación médica toman gran relevancia, deben ser activas y estructuradas. Los resultados de la investigación de GMV en soluciones tecnológicas de realidad virtual para el aprendizaje seguro de técnicas quirúrgicas modernas, a incorporar en la plataforma de simulación insight, facilitará la estandarización de contenidos docentes en formación médica especializada y su evaluación objetiva. Este desarrollo tecnológico permitirá implantar un modelo internacional de formación médica especializada y de acreditación de acuerdo exclusivamente a criterios científicos. OPTIMIZANDO LOS TRATAMIENTOS PARA PACIENTES ONCOLÓGICOS Por otra parte, la simulación de casos clínicos por el oncólogo radioterapeuta con la tecnología radiance de GMV permite optimizar el tratamiento de radioterapia intraoperatoria (RIO) al estudiar las diferentes alternativas terapeúticas y consensuar su criterio, especialmente sobre los volúmenes de irradiación, con el cirujano. Otra mejora sobre el protocolo actual de RIO es la posibilidad de mantener resultados cuantitativos documentados. En momentos de crisis, las inversiones tecnológicas que permiten optimizar los tiempos de formación y la práctica clínica tienen un valor innegable. Los beneficios resultantes revertirán en el propio sistema sanitario: menores efectos adversos, mayor volumen de práctica clínica y mayores niveles de satisfacción tanto en los pacientes como en los profesionales. 8 ENTREVISTA / INTERVIEW Mr. Pablo Rivero, born in Gijón, Asturias (Spain), is a 36-year-old lawyer, and economist, which has enabled him to hold leading positions within the private and public sector. He has been Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Finance & Economic Affairs, Deputy Minister of Strategic Planning & Coordination for the Regional Presidency of the Government of the Balearic Islands (Spain), and Deputy Minister of Planning and Finance for the Ministry of Health of the Balearic Islands (Spain). Mr. Rivero was the Regional Director of Autonomic Development for the consulting firm Gedas S.A. (Volkswagen Group) in Spain; a firm specializing in information and communication technologies, public sector management, and industrial processes. He was appointted Director General of Innovation of the Ministry of Health in Andalusia (Spain) in 2004, where Mr. Rivero, has led the development of the autonomic e-health Innovation Strategic Plan. In 2007 was appointed Vice president and Senior Advisor of Health of the Calgary Health Region in Canada, with the objective of improving citizen engagement through innovation and to promote international collaboration to share best practices. Presently he is the Director General of Quality of the National health System of Spain. Nacido en Gijón, Asturias (España), abogado y diplomado en ciencia empresariales, ha ocupado puestos responsabilidad en el sector público y privado. Ha sido Secretario general de Economía, Hacienda e Innovación, Director general coordinación en Presidencia y Director general de planificación y financiación de Sanidad y Consumo del Gobierno de las Islas Baleares (España). Ha sido Director Regional de la consultora Gedas SA (Grupo Volkswagen), en España, una empresa especializada en tecnologías de información y comunicación, la gestión del sector público y los procesos industriales. Además, fue Director General de Innovación Sanitaria, Sistemas y Tecnologías de la Consejería de Salud de la Junta de Andalucía en 2004, donde dirigió el desarrollo de la e-salud a nivel autonómico. En 2007 fue nombrado Vicepresidente y Asesor Principal de Salud de la Región de Calgary (Canadá), con el objetivo de mejorar la participación de los ciudadanos a través de la innovación y promoción de la colaboración internacional para compartir las mejores prácticas. Actualmente es el Director General de la Agencia de Calidad del Sistema Nacional de Salud del Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo.
