1 Extraordinary Learning for All 7150 N. 22 nd Street Phoenix, AZ Phone: Fax: Attendance: Health Office: October 14, 2013 Dear Heights Families, This week is Parent Teacher Conference Week; teachers have worked hard to schedule time to meet with you about your child s academic and social achievements so far this year. Monday and Tuesday, October 14 and 15, are full days of school with evening conferences, Wednesday, October 16, is a half day (11:00 am dismissal) with afternoon conferences. Thursday and Friday, October 17 and 18, there is no school for Fall Break. The VIG Uptown restaurant on 16th St north of Bethany Home is doing a Dine Out Week this week (from October 13-19). Just tell your server that you re there for Madison Heights and 15% of your check will go directly to the Heights PTO. Our Fall Festival is quickly approaching! Please mark your calendars to join us Friday October 25th from 5:30-8:00 pm. This event is always a big hit with students and families. Many students and adults show off their Halloween costumes at the Fall Festival. The Fall Festival is filled with exciting events. The cost is $5.00 to get in and includes carnival games, prizes, costume parades, inflatable rides, hayrides, dancing and more. Dinner will be served for an extra cost. Other activities available for an extra cost are face painting, cake walk, critter walk, picture booth and plenty of yummy snacks. Also, our Scholastic Book Fair will be going on at the same time so you can add to your home library collection or to your child's classroom. Here is a quick reminder about ways to keep the Madison Heights school environment safe and positive. Remember when driving in the parking lots to park in designated spaces only. The red curbs are Fire Lanes and cars should not be left there. We also expect our students to be in their school uniforms each day, with the exception of Friday when they may wear their school spirit shirts. Check the Student/Parent handbook if you have questions about the student uniform. And finally, we thank you for your continued support at home with Stop, Walk, Talk and the Keys to Success. Stop, Walk, Talk helps students resolve their problems by stopping negative behavior before it escalates. Our students work hard every day to be Respectful, Responsible, Prepared, Prompt and to Participate. Have a wonderful week, enjoy the conferences with your child(ren) s teachers and have a great Fall break! Priscilla Gossett and Bill Wight Principal and TOA

3 October 2013 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 14 (Day 2) Parent/Teacher Conferences 15 (Day 3) Parent/Teacher Conferences 16 (Day 4) Half Day 11:00am Dismissal 17 No School Fall Break Vacaciones de Otoño 18 No School Fall Break Vacaciones de Otoño Medio día salida a la 11am 21 (Day 5) 22 (Day 6) 23 (Day 1) 24 (Day 2) 25 (Day 3) Fall Festival 5:30pm- 8pm Festival de Otoño For the week of September 30th and October 7th Kinder: Zoe Gadow, Lily Anderson, Dazz Mada, Orion Mento First Grade: Elliot Lerma, Kamaria Von Hubschmann, Blake Melcher, Mikki Lifshitz Second Grade: Madison Turner, Jessica Frank, Quinn Cotter, Jack Morton Third Grade: Oswaldo Romero, Ryan Benn, Audri Black, Naomi Cardona, Nathan Duran, Xavier Aguilar, Marcus Giorza, Mykela Shields, Phillip Nations, Allie Ready Fourth Grade: Neko Hernandez, Preston Lossing, Nozhoni Austin Flamenco Comes Back to Heights... Olé! Have you noticed some students clapping out strange patterns lately? Students in third grade Spanish classes have been practicing flamenco rhythms. The bulerías is a compound 12-count, shown here: XxxXxxXxXxXx. Most adults will recognize this rhythm from West Side Story s America (I want to be in A-me-ri-ca...) On Tuesday, October 15 th, Heights will welcome back flamenco artists Monte and Bernadette. They will perform traditional dance from Spain and teach audience participation behaviors to the third graders. Monte will give the students some practice discriminating major and minor chords. Their performance will be at 1:10 in the cafeteria. These programs are made possible through your tax credit/activity fee donations. Thank you!
4 Madison Heights Recycling We are making a difference here at Heights!!! In the 2 months that we have been back at school we ve collected over 1,400 lunchables and 4,750 aluminum juice pouches. Amazing! Keep up the great work! News A big THANK YOU to our volunteers: Todd Giorza, Maureen Hodgins, and Diana Nelson, for checking our bins and bringing boxes to The UPS Store to be shipped. Stop by our Recycling Booth at the Fall Festival to pick up a Recycling Bag to use at home for collecting Heights recycling. Don t forget We encourage you to send in recyclables from home to place in our bins that are housed in the cafeteria. You will find a detailed list of all recyclables for our program on the back of this update. Parents and/or students are welcome to bring recyclables from home in before or after school. Share the list with family and friends so they can save their waste for you to bring in too! Quick Tip Place a bag / box next to your City of Phoenix recyclables designated for all of your Heights recyclables. Post the Heights list above it to make sure you know what can be recycled in our program. Did You Know: Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Most of them are thrown away! Buy reusable water bottles to make a big impact on the earth. A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can in as little as 60 days. That's closed loop recycling at its finest! Glass can be recycled and re-manufactured an infinite amount of times and never wears out.
