3 01// Introduction by Managing Director HULP and Scientific Director of IdiPAZ Once again, the presentation of the annual Scientific Report of the Hospital La Paz Institute for Health Research (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del, IdiPAZ) provides an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of each and every researcher. This report reflects the effort of the forty-eight consolidated and emerging research groups that constitute IdiPAZ, as well as their associated clinical groups. We congratulate all members for the magnificent work performed and the achieved results. Since its establishment in 2009, IdiPAZ has promoted the configuration of multidisciplinary teams capable of addressing several facets of translational research, taking into consideration the need to generate innovation and transfer the results to the healthcare system. Over the years, we have maintained a progressive growth of our scientific activity, which is structured into six research areas: neurosciences, cardiovascular, infectious diseases and immunity, large system pathology, human cancer and molecular genetics and surgery, and transplants and health technology. The increasing scientific contributions performed by our research groups over the last years have placed IdiPAZ among the top three health research institutes with the best scientific evaluation in Spain. Despite the difficult current economic situation, the joint efforts of all our members have allowed us to consolidate the achievements of previous years and maintain a good portion of the activity conducted. In, IdiPAZ s researchers published 931 articles from which 743 were original. In addition, the overall impact factor continued to increase, which in reached 4,060.46, representing a new record for our centre, it actually exceeded the 4,000-point threshold. There was also a consolidation in the quality of the source journals, with a mean impact factor of 4.36 for the third consecutive year and with more than 40% of the manuscripts published in journals in the first quartile of their subject area. Moreover, the activity of the six research areas that constitute IdiPAZ was extremely satisfactory, with a production of more than 100 documents in each area and a high impact factor. The current scientific report also shows data reflecting the commitment of IdiPAZ to training and transferring of biomedical research. The university involvement of most of the research groups as resulted in high participation in graduate programmes, generating 53 doctoral theses this year. The activities that have experienced the greatest increase in IdiPAZ over the last years are those related to innovation and transfer, which have placed us in a position of national leadership. 65 patents and 11 registered trademarks have been obtained, three of which started to generate important profits last year. In addition, our clinical research continues to be very active, placing us as one of the national centres with the largest number of conducted clinical trials. More specifically, 332 new contracts for clinical trials were signed in. We would like to express our admiration for all the professionals who enable the Hospital La Paz Institute for Health Research (IdiPAZ) to continue advancing, which allows us to be optimistic about the future. There have been many achievements and we are confident of achieving many more. Our human potential and determination to continue progressing represent the best guarantee of continued success. In 2008, 11.8% of the articles were published in journals that were in the first decile of their subject area. In contrast, 22.55% of IdiPAZ articles were published in the first decile in. Moreover, 44.36% of the articles were published in journals in the first quartile of their field. 11 02// EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 02.3// Training Report and Teaching // Training Courses Conducted by IdiPAZ in // Training Report and Teaching IdiPAZ s training committee is in charge of defining, elaborating and implementing the organization s training program. It must also ensure the proper development of the programs objectives. This committee is designed in such a way that all members of the IdiPAZ are represented. It is composed of a coordinator and a representative from La Paz University Hospital (HULP) and a representative of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). IdiPAZ s training plan encompasses all studies la ongoing training (HULP) to postgraduate courses (UAM) which also includes IdiPAZ s own specialist courses. In order to design its own courses the committee annually consults via an online needs analysis survey IdiPAZ members on their area of interests regarding the training needs observed by group leaders. IdiPAZ s own courses are meant to complement HULP and UAM courses. These courses are coordinated by an IdiPAZ member who is not only the manager of these courses but also the person in charge of all the administrative documentation required by Spain s National Health System /Board. Thus IdiPAZ courses have the necessary state accreditation. The committee also is in charge of our professionals satisfaction follow up surveys. Since its creation, the Innovation Node has contributed to promoting and protecting innovative/ground breaking research conducted in IdiPAZ. The node also intends to harness our center s considerable innovative potential generated, as a step prior to its subsequent transfer to society. Therefore, one of the main commitments of the Innovation Node is that researchers and health personnel perceive it as a resource at their service, to provide support and advice in all that relates to the identification, management, protection, transfer, marketing and dissemination of their research results. ACTIVITIES The main task of the Innovation Node is to identify the potential transferable research results generated within our centre and to accompany and support the researcher throughout the whole innovation process: from the birth of the idea to its placement on the market. Since the Node has been in operation, we have managed projects sponsored by the centre itself and have signed collaboration agreements with important private institutions and organisations to promote innovation. Our main objectives are: Promotion of a culture of innovation protection within the various sectors that constitute IdiPAZ and its Hospital through seminars on subjects related to the protection of research results and technology transfer. Active search and identification of innovation throughout the medical setting of our centre. Provision of institutional support for groups that generate innovation. Localisation of new technologies for daily use. Active search for partners required for the development of projects, including technological companies as well as industrial and financial partners. Organisation of seminars with other centres from which potential collaborations might arise to our technological and training needs. Preparation and consultancy for any type of collaboration agreement with the industrial sector or other research centres, including attendance bids for funding. Evaluation of research results in terms of their protection and transfer. Protection of research results and management and promotion of the IdiPAZ technology portfolio. Search for licensees for the transfer of results, including existing and yet-to-be-created companies. Achievement of the greatest possible impact on society and financial return for the institution itself. 15 02// EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 02.4// Innovation and Transfer Activities In addition to the four license agreements signed over the past three years, two new licenses were signed in. One of them is based on a patent related with a composition to reduce inflammatory processes, in particular, processes associated with the menopause. The other one is based on a computer application (called TIMI) intended for the management of antibiotic treatments. The Institute s technology portfolio has continued to grow, not only at the patent level but also in the area of intellectual property, mainly through the registry of computer programmes, quality of life questionnaires, etc. A catalogue of technological offers -based on specification sheets- has been completed, which includes the complete portfolio of exploitable IdiPAZ results. This catalogue aims to promote the transference of IdiPAZ s technology portfolio to the industrial sector, generate collaborative projects for technological development and foster the exploitation of research results. Those sheets that have been already validated are published on the IdiPAZ website. The catalogue will be updated as the Institute s technology portfolio grows. By virtue of its membership in the ITEMAS Platform, the Unit has continued to strengthen ties and creating synergies with the members of this Platform in order to achieve its established objectives. The Unit has participated in various forums and round tables organised by various participants of the biomedical sector. 19 02// EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 02.5// Quality Assurance Activities // Protocols and Clinical Pathways Name of Protocol Status Name of Protocol Status // Quality Assurance Committee IdiPAZ s vision is to be a national and European reference centre for multidisciplinary translational biomedical research. To achieve this objective, the institution combines its efforts to ensure the quality of all its processes, thus ensuring the best service, research and teaching. IdiPAZ is committed to a comprehensive quality model backed by the maturity and quality of the managing team of the IdiPAZ institutions. In order to support and facilitate quality, the institution has a permanent Quality Committee. During, the Quality Committee developed its principles and achieved specific quality objectives. In July the Quality Committee obtained the ISO 9001:2008 standard certification for its quality management. The scope of this certification includes the three main processes assigned to the Quality committee: monitoring technical and scientific quality; support and development of initiatives for the improvement of IdiPA; and, the analysis of complaints, suggestions and acknowledgements received from the IdiPAZ researchers. In these settings, the Quality Committee maintains a close relationship with the Technical Secretary of IdiPAZ. This achievement is a starting point for the future certification of other areas of IdiPAZ, thus spreading the ISO Quality Management culture throughout the organisation. Moreover, considering that IdiPAZ is a continuously evolving organisation, our ISO Quality activities have been enriched by the different achievements made by and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The hospital, with its accumulative experience of quality of care improvement, has continued its intensive work during. Protocols, clinical pathways and participation in clinical practice guidelines has been developed and reviewed. The attached tables show the clinical pathways reviewed in as well as the protocols developed or updated in the same period. In addition, staff members collaborate continuously in the institution s improvement by participating in clinical committees and creating improvement groups, as well as implementing satisfaction surveys for patients and professionals. Also during, 16 departments maintained the standard ISO 9001:2008 of their quality management system. In addition to these certificates, the hospital is one of the main Spanish centres of accreditation of reference centres, services and units of the Spanish National Health System. In fact, in the hospital had 18 accredited units. The centre also has departments that are preparing their accreditation at other scientific-technological levels, humanization, etc. Finally, in, the quality management at IdiPAZ was maintained with the primary objective of facilitating activities for all the professionals that are part of IdiPAZ and at the same time offering an overall and common reference framework for the achievement of excellence.
