English 3 Unit 6 Managing life Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you will be able to: Communicate your plans for the future using the future tenses. Remember the differences between will, going to, present continuous and the simple present while talking about the future. Use ought to, have got to, would rather, had better, going to + have to, when giving advice. 1

Introduction Nina: Today I had a really bad day, so I will go home, have a nice dinner, take a bubble bath and relax. Tomorrow I am going to see my travel agent to pick up the airplane tickets. I can t wait to see you. I m going to buy some bathing suits, shorts and nice t shirts. I m getting your favorite chocolates and a few souvenirs for your family. Do you need something else from here? Well, I start working tomorrow at 7:00, write to you later. See you soon in Hawaii. Love Michael. Making plans is something we do all the time. We live in a moment where our job, school and life in general can be very stressful; managing our activities according to a schedule can help us to do all the activities we want. In this lesson you will learn to use the different future tenses to make plans, it is important that you learn the rules to apply each tense. In addition, you will learn to use the grammatical structures ought to, had better, have got to, have to and would rather to give an advice when someone tells you their problems. Let start! 2

Future tenses: Will Use will, while at the moment of speaking you decide to do something in the future, for facts and predictions. Example: After I finish college, I will travel around Mexico. (decision) I won t go to the party I m not feeling well. (fact) Dad, will you pick me up from the school? (request) In 2030 the world will be really different. (prediction). Review Future tense: Will Form to write affirmative statements: Subject will verb in base form We will play a video game and watch tv. Form to write negative statements: complement. I will go to France next year. Subject will + not verb in base form complement. I will not (won t) study English next year. You won t go out tonight. 3

Review Future tense: Will Form to write short questions. Will subject verb in base form complement Will you come to see me? Answer Yes, I will No, I won t Will you stay to eat? Form to information questions Wh will subject Verb in base form complement Where will you eat today? I will eat in the cafeteria Future tenses: Going to Use going to for facts, intention of doing something (plans) and predictions. Example: I m going to pick up my new car on Monday. (fact) We aren t going to marry on June, it is going to be on September (intention, plan). It is going to be a hot day, look it is early and it is 26 degrees. (prediction) What are you going to study? (asking for a plan) 4

Review Future tense: Going to Form to write affirmative statements: Subject verb be (am, is, are) going to verb in base form Nidia is going to have a party next Sunday complement. I am going to travel to Canada on July. Form to write negative statements: Subject Mario and Patty verb be (am, is, are) + not are not (aren t) going to going to buy verb in base form complement. a new house Review Future tense: Going to Form to write short questions: Verb Be subject going to verb in base form Are you going to study complement for the exam? Answer Yes, I am. Form to write information questions: Whword Verb be subject going to verb in base form I m going to live in the school dorms. complement Where are you going to live when you go to college? 5

Future tenses: Present Continuous Use the present continuous for arrangements (plans) and decisions you made before. Examples: I m buying a new car in this month, I m tired of fixing the one I have. (decision) Carolina is staying at home tonight, she needs to study. (plan) I m eating sushi later! (plan). Future tenses: The simple present Use the simple present when you need to talk about schedules and time of your activities. Example: I plan to have dinner with Michael tomorrow at 9:00 pm. Theo starts school on Friday at 8:00. We go back home tomorrow morning. 6

Learning Notes about the future tenses Will is used at the moment of speaking and it is often used to express willingness to do something and to answer for requests. I will make the dinner for you. (Voluntary action) Going to, on the contrary is used to express when we decided to do something, or we have the intention to do something (plan already made). I m going to travel to Cancun on December. (intention) The present continuous is used for plans and arrangements, use it when you are certain that the things will happen. I m having a party next Saturday, I ve already invited everyone. (plan completely organized) Express solutions to certain problems Suggest the people what is advisable to do in a situation using: Ought to, has a sense of moral obligation. Problem: I saw someone breaking into my neighbor s house. Solution: You ought to call the police quickly. Problem: I need some work experience to find a job quickly. Solution: You ought to send your resume to the companies. 7

Express solutions to certain problems Had better, give a strong advice. Problem: My arm hurts, after I fell down. Solution: You had better go to the doctor. Problem: I failed many classes in the school. Solution: You d better talk to your parents. Express solutions to certain problems Want to/ Might want to: make suggestions and give advice. Problem: I need more money to pay my rent. Solution: You might want to look for another job. Problem: I can t stand working in the same company with my ex. Solution: You want to reconsider the things and calm down, it is a good job. 8

Express solutions to certain problems So you can express what is necessary to do in a situation: Going to + have to: give a strong advice it has the same meaning as have to. Problem: My computer doesn t work anymore. Solution: You are going to have to buy a new one. Problem: I don t have access to Blackboard. Solution: You have to call the supervisor. Express solutions to certain problems Have got to: it has a similar meaning as have to. Problem: I have a huge headache. Solution: I have got to go home and rest. Problem: My dog is sick. Solution: I have got to take it to the vet. 9

Express solutions to certain problems So you can express what is preferable to do: Would rather: it means prefer to. And it is more used with the pronoun I. Problem: You look sad, are you ok? Solution: Sorry, I d rather not talk about it. Problem: I have a party in my friend s house and it is at night and far away. Solution: I d rather stay home, it is too dangerous. Closing Melissa, it is me Tina, I m calling you, because the guys and I are making plans to have dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant, we are going to have a meeting in the afternoon, but as soon as we finish we will go there. I m ordering the pizza we both like, what do you think? will you come with us? Well, I will call you back later. Bye. In this unit, you learned to make plans. As you could see making plans is a very common topic because as human beings we think a lot about the future, especially if we feel stress or we have problems. 10

When we are young, we tend to plan more because we have so many activities and we want to manage our time more efficiently These future tenses will help you do that. Just remember when to use will, going to, the present continuous and simple present, because they cannot be used in the same way, remember you use one at the moment of speaking, others are for plans and predictions, etc. Now you will be able to give an advice to the people when they have problems, and also you can make plans!
