4 Soy de Es de I m from He/She is from Subjects & Verbs in Sentences *In English each sentence has a subject and a verb. The subject is the noun that is doing something or being described. The verb is the action word or a word that links the subject to a description. Examples: Mrs. Stines is my teacher. Mrs. Stines (subject) is(verb)-links Mrs. Stines to description She is from N.J. She (subject) is (verb) *In Spanish sentences also have a subject and a verb. Examples: Señora Stines es mi profesora. Ella es de N.J. *Both English & Spanish use nouns as subjects. Nouns can be replaced with pronouns. *English sentences always have subjects but in Spanish the subject or subject pronoun can be left out if everyone knows who you are talking about. Maria is my friend./maria es mi amiga. She is from Spain. Es de España.

10 Telling Time In Spanish, there is no word this is equal to the word o clock. When telling the time, only the number of the hour is needed. A feminine definite article la or las comes before the number of the hour and the word for hour itself (la hora) is taken out. a las siete at seven o clock a la una at one o clock Time is generally expressed with a form of the verb ser (to be) Qué hora es? What time is it? Es la una. It is 1:00 Son las dos. It is 2:00 Any time after the exact hour, minutes are expressed with y (and). Es la una y cinco. It is 1:05 Es la una y diez. It is 1:10 Son las dos y cuatro. It is 2:04 Son las tres y veinte. It is 3:20 Between half past the hour and the next hour, there are various ways to express time. Son las dos menos cuarto. It is quarter of 2. OR It is 1:45. Son las cinco menos cinco. It is five of 5. OR It is 4:55. Noon and midnight are expressed without an article. Es mediodía. It is noon. Es medianoche. It is midnight.

13 Punctuation marks and written accents In Spanish, upside-down punctuation marks and are added to the beginning of a phrase to signal a question or exclamation. You will continue to use the punctuation at the end of the sentence or question as well. Examples: Qué día es hoy? Hasta luego! Some words in Spanish have accent marks. An accent mark is a tilted line placed over a VOWEL. The accent marks tell where the word should be stressed. Putting accent marks over vowels is part of spelling the word correctly. Example: Adiós día A tilde is the wavy line on the letter ñ. The ñ is pronounced similar to the ny in the word canyon. Example: señora mañana
