Connection from School to Home Science Grade 2 Unit 3 Forces and Motion Here is an easy activity to help your child understand forces and motion. Here is what you do: Step 1: Gather materials. Dollar bill, empty glass soda bottle, and 6 quarters. Step 2: Stack the quarters directly over the mouth of the bottle, on top of the dollar bill. Step 3: Stick out your index finger, and swipe down at the dollar bill. Be careful not to hit the quarters or the bottle. If you do it right, your finger should pull the dollar bill out from under the quarters, leaving them stack atop the bottle. Step 4: The key to the Newton's Bottle trick is inertia. Inertia is described in Sir Isaac First Law of Motion. Inertia is the tendency for an object at rest to remain at rest until an outside force acts upon it. Inertia is important in the Newton's Bottle trick because, according to the law, the quarters and bottle (the objects) will not move unless an outside force moves them. In this we are only moving the dollar bill. Step 5: Have a conversation. Why do things move? What forces are placed on objects so they would move? For example, gravity, push, pull or lift? What causes an object to stop moving? For example, friction, gravity, air resistance, other objects. Extension: Test it out. Take 2 balls of different sizes and place them on the floor. What would cause them to move? What would cause them to move faster? What causes them to stop? Which ball will move faster? Slower? Why? Throw the ball in the air. What causes it to come down? Why does it stop? Did your child like the activity? YES NO Was the activity easy to do? YES NO Did you get to talk about school topics with your child? YES NO Did the instructions have everything you needed? YES NO Is there anything that would make it better? 1

Solids, Liquids and Gases Around the House Here is an easy activity to help your child learn about the different states of matter. Here is what you do: Step 1: Talk with your child about how items around us are a liquid, a solid or a gas. Solids have their own shape. Liquids take the shape of their container. Gases do not have shape. Step 3: As you are driving, eating breakfast, or any time of day, take turns playing I am thinking of something Use describing words like color, texture, etc. For example: I am thinking of something liquid. Is it water? No. It is orange. Is it orange juice? Yes! Step 2: Take turns giving examples of things in similar states. For example, say, Apple juice is a liquid because I can pour it. What else is a liquid? (ex. Other types of juice, water, broth, liquid soap) My breath is a gas because it is invisible and it doesn t really have a shape. What else is a gas? (ex: Air, steam) This table is a solid because it has its own shape. What else is a solid? (ex: chair, stuffed animal, book, sandwich) Extension questions: Is yogurt or mashed potatoes a solid or a liquid? Can something change from a solid to a liquid? Did your child like these activities? YES NO Was the activity easy to do? YES NO Did you get to talk about school topics with your child? YES NO Did the instructions have everything you needed? YES NO Is there anything that would make it better? 3

Connection from School to Home Science Grade 1 Unit 1 Changing the State of Matter 1 Here is an easy activity to help your child learn about how matter can change. Here is what you do: Step 1: Talk with your child about how items around us are liquids, solids or gases and how we can make some items change. Solids have their own shape. Liquids take the shape of their container. Gases do not have shape. Step 3: Ask your child to observe the chocolate. Ask: Is the chocolate now a liquid, solid or gas? How do you know? How idoes it look different than before? What made it change? (temperature- heat or cold) Step 5: Pull the chocolate out of the freezer and ask your child to observe the chocolate. Ask: Is the chocolate now a liquid, solid or gas? How do you know? How does it look different than before? What made it change? (temperature- heat or cold) Step 2: Put some chocolate chips in a baggie. Ask: Is the chocolate a liquid, solid or gas? How do you know? Have your child hold the baggie of chocolate and to breathe into the baggie to warm it up. Step 3: Ask, What do you think we need to do to make the chocolate a solid again? Have your child collect the chocolate in a corner of the bag, or pour it into a mold or ice cube tray. Put the chocolate into the freezer and wait about 10 minutes. Extension: Ask: What other foods do you think we can change into a liquid or solid using heat and cold? Did your child like these activities? YES NO Was the activity easy to do? YES NO Did you get to talk about school topics with your child? YES NO Did the instructions have everything you needed? YES NO Is there anything that would make it better? 5
