3 FR. ABELS COLUMN This weekend you might have noticed a new format to out bulletin. Members of our parish staff that have their own page so they can share with you the many events happening in our parish. In addition to a page being dedicated to our Spanish and Korean Communities, I have added a page for our Filipino Community highlighting upcoming events they are working on. We added 2 additional pages to the bulletin in order to accomplish this. Enjoy! Also, I am happy to announce that our new parish website is finally up and running. You will find information about our staff, programs, parish ministries and even photos that show all the great things happening in our parish. A great feature is being able to access the web site in Korean, Spanish and Tagalog. The website is: saintsebastianwoodside.org. Also, check out our St. Sebastian Facebook page as well! We welcome the Little Sisters of the Poor who are here this weekend asking your help for the wonderful work they do for the elderly poor. I know you will be generous to them as possible. Finally, last Thursday we welcomed Bishop DiMarzio to our parish as he celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation for 89 of our young people in the parish. May the Holy Spirit continue to be a friend to the young people of our Parish! Family Activity with Scripture The Pflaum Gospel Weeklies are designed to be a regular part of family life. Not only do the Weeklies use the Sunday Eucharist and the Gospel as the source of catechesis thirty-two times a year, they also have the students carry that catechesis home. Each weekly lesson is family friendly and parents can easily see and share what their youngsters have learned. Those lessons when shared regularly also lead right back to Sunday Mass and the celebration of the seasons of faith with the community. Abels LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR Today Sunday, October 5th, the Litter Sisters will be requesting donations at the doors of the Church. Your gift will help them to provide a loving home atmosphere and quality care to the many who are alone in their old age and whose resources are diminishing. 5 St. Sebastian School A Catholic School of Excellence October Newsletter Happy October everyone! September went by so quickly. We are off to a great start for the school year. Here are some reminders for the month of October. First, many thanks to all of you for a very successful Magazine Drive. It is one of our major fundraisers and I cannot thank you enough for your participation. Thanks to Mrs. O Melia, the volunteer mothers, and our friends from Great American for organizing the sale. Students, parents and teachers are invited to visit the High Schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn to view the facilities and to the programs offered. This can be done by the various Open Houses which most of the schools schedule prior to the for Admission into Catholic High. and faculty members are available during each Open House to answer questions which this may not have Children who are receiving the sacrament of Confirmation must attend a rehearsal with sponsor or parent on Wednesday, October 1 st. We will meet in the Church promptly at 6 PM. All student must be accompanied by an adult. Confirmation is scheduled for Thursday, October 2nd at 5 PM. Congratulations to the Confirmandi as they take this important step on their faith journey. We welcome Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio to St. Sebastian Church to lead us in prayer on this special day. The Annual Rosary Rally is scheduled for Thursday, October 9 th. All are welcome to join us as we pray this beautiful prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mother. My contact information is: Each year, the bishops of the United States determine a theme for the learning year. The theme this year is Teaching about God s Gift of Forgiveness. Your child and I and the rest of the students in the class will often focus on forgiveness. We will talk about offering forgiveness to others, asking for forgiveness to others, asking the forgiveness when we know we have done wrong or hurt another person, and accepting God s unconditional forgiveness. Talk with your child about forgiveness and encourage forgiveness in your family. What you do in the home is the starting place for what the students and I do in the classroom. I look forward to growing in faith with you and your child during the year ahead. Theme for the Evening: I See How God Dwells in Me Nearly 500 years ago, St Ignatius of Loyola taught a way of praying that led to an intimate encounter with the Living God. This method became known as The First Spiritual Exercises. These Exercises were created to help a person ask for and receive inner peace and enter into a deeper relationship with God. You too can experience the Lord in this rich and timeless way of praying, sacred listening and spiritual conversation. This method became known as The First Spiritual Exercises. These Exercises were created to help a person ask for and receive inner peace and enter into a deeper relationship with God. You too can experience the Lord in this rich and timeless way of praying, sacred listening and spiritual conversation. There are 2 First Spiritual Exercise Events remaining this Fall on Thursdays Oct. 9 and Nov. 13 th. Each has a different theme. 9 Comunidad Latino Americana CATEQUESIS DEL PAPA FRANCISCO Eviten lamentos teatrales y recen por quienes de verdad sufren, exhorta el Papa Francisco VATICANO, 30 Sep. 14 / 09:49 am. - El Papa Francisco dedicó su homilía de hoy en la Misa que presidió en la Casa Santa Marta a reflexionar sobre la actitud de algunos que se enojan con Dios ante cosas pequeñitas y deciden, por ejemplo, no volver a Misa; y alentó en cambio a todos a rezar siempre por quienes sufren de verdad como los cristianos perseguidos o los ancianos enfermos. Según señala Radio Vaticano, el Papa centró su homilía en la primera lectura de hoy del libro de Job en la que aparece maldiciendo su vida ante el drama que le ha tocado vivir al perderlo todo, y recordó a los que viven grandes tragedias, como los cristianos expulsados de sus casas a causa de su fe. El Papa recordó que Job fue puesto a prueba. Perdió toda sufamilia; perdió todos sus bienes; perdió la salud y todo su cuerpo se convirtió en una llaga, una llaga asquerosa. En ese momento perdió la paciencia y dijo esas cosas feas. Pero él estaba acostumbrado a hablar con la verdad y esa es la verdad que él siente en aquel momento. También Jeremías usa casi las mismas palabras: Maldito el día en que nací!. Pero este hombre blasfema? Es la pregunta que hago. Este hombre que está solo, así, en ese momento, blasfema?. Continuará en el próximo boletín PASTORAL MATRIMONIAL DEPENDENCIA Cuando un cónyuge necesita ineludiblemente apoyarse todo el tiempo en otro cónyuge, nos hallamos ante el fenómeno de la dependencia que, inequívocamente, denota ausencia de libertad. Dos personas se aman cuando son capaces de vivir la una sin la otra, pero han optado por vivir juntas. Las típicas personas dependientes están siempre mendigando amor. En todo momento sienten que algo les falta. Son incapaces de estar solos. Eternamente insaciables, buscan y buscan apoyo, afecto y seguridad. Todo ello es señal de inmadurez e infantilismo. Infante es aquel ser esencialmente apoyado, para andar, comer, vivir necesita del otro. Adulto en cambio, es aquel ser esencialmente autosuficiente: se basta así mismo, no necesita apoyo de nadie para organizar la vida y la familia. Por otra parte, la personalidad infantil es aquella que se siente plenamente realizada tan sólo con ser amada, como en el caso del niño. Por el contrario, personalidad adulta es aquella que se siente plena siendo amada y amando. Superadultos son aquellos que son capaces de amar sin ser amados. Agradezco a aquellos que han estado con nosotros desde las primeras tres sesiones, y por lo que me han dicho ha estado muy interesante y que han aprendido mucho atreves de la música, la fotografía y todo el arte. Aquellos que tengan la oportunidad que adquieran él libro con el mismo nombre Catolicismo del Padre Robert Barron, para poder profundizar más sobre el tema, el libro es un buen acompañante para la series. El domingo pasado después de la misa de 12 pm se dió comienzo a los talleres de la Pastoral Familiar con el tema: Inmigración. Felicitamos a todas la personas que asistieron y nos alegramos que hayan recibido respuesta a todas sus preguntas. El domingo 26 de octubre, después de la misa de 12pm tendremos el Segundo taller de la Pastoral Familiar con el tema: Obamacare. Esperamos su asistencia.
