2 Prerrequisito para el curso Se requiere haber aprobado el curso Spanish 3702 u otro curso equivalente de nivel universitario. Descripción del curso En este curso se estudian la morfología y la sintaxis del español actual y está diseñado especialmente para los estudiantes de nivel intermedio avanzado, con aplicación a los principales estilos de discurso (descripción, narración, exposición). Se presentan también algunos contrastes generales entre las estructuras gramaticales del español y del inglés. La lectura y los ejercicios basados en los cuentos les ayudarán a los estudiantes a identificar las reglas gramaticales en el contexto escrito y también a enriquecer el vocabulario dentro de un amplio contexto cultural del mundo hispano. La explicación de las reglas gramaticales y los ejercicios de práctica (ejercicios de automatización, interpretación, corrección y producción) son claros, útiles y operativos y se presentan en contextos reales a fin de comprender mejor el uso de la gramática del español actual. Asistencia y participación en clase La asistencia a la clase es obligatoria y se espera que los estudiantes estén preparados para participar en la discusión del material de este curso. La Nota de Participación en Clase depende de la preparación inmediata del estudiante utilizando el material asignado para cada día de clase y del trabajo realizado en grupo. Por lo tanto, la ausencia a las clases afectará esta nota. Se mantendrá un cuadro de seguimiento de la asistencia a las clases, el cual quedará archivado en el DFLL al final del semestre. La nota Incomplete (I) La nota I (Incomplete) se reserva exclusivamente para aquellos casos en que un estudiante, por razones justificables, no puede completar los requisitos de este curso. Se debe hacer la solicitud de esta nota por escrito y además debe tener la aprobación tanto del profesor como del jefe del DFLL. En cuanto a este curso (Fall 2013), la parte pendiente de la nota debe completarse para el 1º de marzo del próximo año (Spring 2014). Integridad académica Se espera que todas las actividades académicas realizadas por los alumnos representen directamente el esfuerzo y la indagación personales. Por consiguiente, todo trabajo hecho fuera de la clase (exámenes, composiciones, informes) debe hacerse individualmente y de acuerdo con las normas apropiadas para citar las fuentes de información convencional, impresas y digitales. B. Objetivos del curso Teniendo en cuenta la descripción y las exigencias de este curso, al final del semestre, el estudiante aplicado debe...

3 3 1. conocer los términos básicos de la gramática del español; 2. entender las reglas básicas de la gramática (morfología y sintaxis) y aplicarlas al proceso de comunicación escrita; 3. mejorar la habilidad de escribir en prosa utilizando los estilos de discurso más comunes; 4. utilizar vocabulario más apropiado en la comunicación escrita y 5. entender las diferencias fundamentales entre la gramática general básica del español y del inglés. C. Exámenes y composiciones 1. Además de la lectura cuidadosa de los libros de texto y de la preparación diaria de los ejercicios correspondientes, cada estudiante debe escribir cinco (5) composiciones siguiendo las instrucciones dadas para redactar cada una de ellas. 2. Si un estudiante no presenta un examen en la fecha indicada en el programa, debe informarle de inmediato al instructor y explicarle la causa de su ausencia. Para obtener el derecho a presentarlo en una fecha posterior, usted debe presentar una excusa válida y verificable. D. Sistema de Calificación La nota final de este curso depende de las siguientes actividades académicas cuyos porcentajes parciales se indican en seguida: 5 Pruebas 20% 5 Composiciones 30% Participación en clase 10% Examen intermedio 20% Examen final 20% Se asignarán las notas siguiendo la siguiente escala de la YSU: A B C D F 59-01

4 University and Department Policies Applicable to All Classes Academic Honesty: It is assumed that students will do their own work. Students may help one another by sharing information when doing assignments inside and outside of class. However, students must not copy from one another or from any source, nor should they seek help from native speakers in preparing graded assignments outside of class. Translation software may not be used. Students must not help one another during tests. Americans with Disabilities Act: Anyone requiring special adaptations or accommodations should inform the instructor as soon as possible. In accordance with University procedures, if you have a documented disability and require accommodations to obtain equal access in this course, please contact the Office of Disability Services at 275 Fifth Avenue (phone: ) at the beginning of the semester or when given an assignment for which an accommodation is required. Students with disabilities must verify their eligibility through the Office of Disability Services. Auditors: Students auditing this course receive no credit and are not obligated to take tests. However, attendance is required. To receive the AU grade, auditors must attend 60% of the class meetings. If this attendance requirement is not met, a W will be recorded instead of an AU. Cancellation of Class: If this class is being cancelled on a particular day because of instructor illness or for other reasons, notification will be sent to the student address as soon as possible. Departmental Attendance Policy: The Department has developed the following attendance policy. Please note that this policy exists independent of any class participation grading component your course may have: Students who miss 50% or more of the classes shall have their final grade lowered by 2 letter grades (i.e., an A will become a C, a B will become a D, and a C or D will become an F). Students who miss between 25 and 49% of the classes shall have their final grade lowered by 1 letter grade (i.e., an A will become a B, a B will become a C, a C will become a D, and a D will become an F). Excused absences will not be counted in the above calculations, but for an absence to be excused, acceptable documentation must be provided to and approved by the instructor and then passed on to the Department Chair. Make-up Policy: Graded work missed (or not submitted) due to an excused absence must be made up as quickly as possible. Students will be allowed one day per day of excused absence to make up the missed work (e.g., if class meets MTWF and you miss Tuesday and Wednesday and return to class on Friday, you would have to make up the work by the next Tuesday). A make-up request form must be filled out and signed by the student and instructor. This form will include an explanation for why the student requires a make-up and will specify the DATE and TIME when the make-up will be given or the assignment will be turned in. Failure to meet the deadline will result in a grade of zero for the assignment. If you are unable to take an exam as scheduled, 4

5 5 you must notify the instructor as soon as possible. A legitimate, documented, excuse (illness, accident, death in the family, obligation to represent the university at a sporting or other event, etc.) will be required for the authorization to make up the exam. Incomplete Policy: Incompletes will be given only in cases in which students have completed all assignments and evaluations for the first thirteen week (or the first five weeks in a six-week summer session or the first ten weeks in a twelve-week summer session) and have, at the time of the request, a course average which would enable them to receive credit for the course. A Request for Incomplete form must be filled out and signed by both the student and the instructor. This form will include an explanation of why the student requires an Incomplete and appropriate documentation to support the request is to be provided at this time. A University Explanation of an Incomplete Grade form will be filed only after the Chair has conferred with the instructor and approved the granting of the Incomplete. Under normal circumstances students will have one month from the date of the final examination to remove the Incomplete. Please note that it is University policy that for Fall courses, the final date for completing the coursework is March 1 of the following semester; for Spring courses, the final date is September 1 of the following semester; and for Summer courses, the final date is October 1 of the following semester. Extra Credit: Department policy forbids the awarding of extra credit.
