Each year, to 'promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment, children and parents all over the world observe International Walk a Child to School Day. This year Walk a Child to School Day is Wednesday, October 5, At Martin, we are often tempted to drive because of our fantastic parking lot! Please consider walking whenever possible, as it promotes health and reduces traffic congestion at school. Tips for Walking Safely Walk A Child To School Day P.1 Help your Child Set Goals P.3 Important Information P Important Dates P.7 Make sure your children: Know the safest and most direct route home Walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk in the road, face the traffic so that you can see cars coming and keep as far from the roadway (as far away from the traffic) as possible. Cross only at corners or marked crosswalks. (If there is a crosswalk button, press the button and wait for the walk sign to indicate that it is safe to cross.) Stop at the curb or edge of the road, look left, then right, and then left again (left- right-left) before you step into the street. Keep looking for cars while you are crossing. Walk, don t run. This gives time for drivers to see you before you enter the roadway Wear bright colors at night. 18 th Annual Parent Conference- Sat., October 29, 2011 On Saturday October 29 th, Santa Ana Unified School District will have the 17 th Annual Parent Conference. It will be held at Valley High School and will be from 8:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. Buses will pick up here at Martin that morning. Parents will be able to attend sessions informing them of how to work with their children. Childcare will be provided. Parents will receive valuable information and we hope everyone can attend. Flyers were sent home this week- please return the bottom portion if you plan on attending. Parking We have had school police come by to offer us help in order to make sure our students are safe in the Parking Lot. Parents, please make sure you are driving slowly into the parking lot and that you are only waiting in the labeled loading zone. We are asking that you try not to walk through the parking lot. We have had students walk between cars and this could be very dangerous. Thank you for your help in making our school a safe place for children.

1. Yo voy a leer 30 minutos diariamente. 2. Rau.

4 Why Set Goals? In order to succeed in school and in life, our children need to develop the skill of setting goals, making a plan to achieve them and celebrating their success. They learn to make decisions that will help them meet their goals. By teaching your children to set goals, they will better be able set life goals, make a plan and achieve them. Creating Goals 1. Have your students write down their goals and dreams for life first. An example might be I want to be a teacher when I grow up. 2. Discuss with your child how doing well in school can help them achieve their life goals. Then discuss with your child goals for the school year by asking them what they want to achieve this year. You can discuss test scores and levels like I want will get to 450 on ELA and 600 on math. or discuss learning goals I want to learn to read. 3. Write the goals down on a piece of paper. Let your child select their goal for the school year. You might even be surprised to find that the expectations your child has for himself or herself are higher than you imagined! Developing a Plan to meet the goal Once your child picks a personal learning goal, you'll want to help him or her develop a plan for accomplishing it. Write down the goal and have your child. This will most include defining the goal, setting a time frame, and making a list of steps necessary in working toward the goal. Write three things they can do to help them achieve that goal. Goal: I will achieve proficient on The CST in ELA and Math. 1. I will read for at least 30 minutes a day. 2. I will practice my math facts 20 minutes a day. 3. I will do my best in school. 4. I will use my testing strategies Celebrating Success How to help your child set goals Make sure you remind them of their goals and celebrate when students meet their goals acknowledge and celebrate your child's progress along the way. When a child sees that their family cares about them meeting their goal, they strive to achieve that goal. Once goals have been achieved, meet with your child to set new goals.. Jiji Math Jiji leads the way- students have started using the Jiji Program. Students are make great growth and love using the new program. Each trimester we will be giving out prizes to students who get to 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Accelerated Reader Accelerated Reader is a reading program we have at Martin. Please have your child read at home for at least 30 minutes every day. Students earn points for reading and answering comprehension questions on the computer. Remember you have to read to succeed. STUDENTS WHO READ MORE DO BETTER IN THEIR SCHOOLWORK AND KNOW MORE ABOUT OUR WORLD. Math Facts Fluency It is important that students learn their math facts. Every day students should practice their math facts for their grade level. By practicing they will better be able to solve other math problems. Think Together Think Together has begun their afterschool program. If you have any questions about the program, please visit the director, Ms. Rau, in the CFA.
