3 Dear Families, On behalf of the staff of Woodlawn School, welcome to the school year! We re ready and excited to begin a rewarding and successful experience for all our students. We will continue to provide a safe and nurturing academic environment, working in partnership with families and community partners as we continually improve and maximize our effectiveness with students. This Calendar offers helpful information about essential dates. A separate handbook will be delivered to you at Back to School Night in September. Look for school newsletter, on yellow paper, is sent home every Wednesday as part of a collection of important information in the Wednesday Folder. Calendar updates, special happenings, and details about events are provided in the newsletter. I am looking forward to an exciting and fulfilling school year for all of us. 4 School Hours 8:20 Breakfast for all students 8:30 6 th -8 th grade to lockers 8:38 6 th -8 th grade class starts; any students arriving after 8:38 are late prek-5 students to class 8:45 prek-5 th grades class starts; any students arriving after 8:45 are late 3:00 end of class time for all students Dismissal Locations (3:00) Teachers will exit with children using the nearest doors. If you are meeting your child at the end of the day, use the following to assist you: Students in the south pod (1 st -2 nd grades), first floor, will exit the side door near the portables. Students in the north pod (K and 2 nd grades), first floor, will exit the side door near the mini-playground. 3 rd -4 th grade students will exit through the north front doors. 5 th -8 th grade students will exit through the main front doors. 5 Dress Code, Code of Colors: Wildcats wear uniforms Monday-Thursday that follow the colors listed. Fridays are free dress days. bottoms- tan/khaki, navy, black, plaid navy/red tops- collared, no logos/words/pictures- burgundy, white, navy, black On Late Start Wednesdays, we will have a Spirit Day- themes will be announced in the Wednesday newsletter Visitors and Volunteers We welcome your participation in classrooms and at events. Safety in and around the building is our first priority. Please help keep everyone safe (students and you!) by signing in at the office when you are here during class times, 8:50-3:00. If you are dropping off and leaving the building before 8:50, you do not need to sign in. If you are picking up before 3:00, please sign in if you plan to wait inside. We have clip-on tags and stick-on tags to identify you as a visitor or volunteer. 7 Welcome to Woodlawn - A STEAM Planetary School One of the key goals of the Woodlawn Federal School Improvement Grant (SIG) is to become a STEAM school: Science Technology Engineering Arts Math Increasing the amount and quality of STEAM activities will help prepare students for higher-paying careers in our technology-based economy. By 2018 is it predicted that 1 in 20 global jobs will be related to science, technology, engineering, and math - the second-fastest growing occupation group (after healthcare). To become a STEAM school, we have focused on a planetary theme to make Woodlawn unique and connect our students with experts and organizations in the community, nation, and world. Why a Planetary theme? Space is inclusive, open-ended, and exciting to students. A planetary themed program would allow our students not only connect their studies to the planets and stars above, but also to encourage them to study our own planet. This field is diverse - scientists from around the world work together by sharing common vocabulary and goals. Space organizations are looking for school partners. There is already interest from the Viking Mars Mission Project (Portland), XCOR Aerospace, NASA Education, OMSI, and American Museum of Natural History (NYC). With a planetary theme, Woodlawn would not be competing with the many environmental themed schools in Portland for grants and partners. This theme could be part of the Woodlawn Outdoor Classroom and Earth Station Garden on the school s north cement area. This Depave project could be used not only for science but also literacy/reading, observation/ measurements, and community gatherings. The STEAM activities, technology, and vocabulary would be added as an enrichment to the current literacy, math, art, social studies, and science lessons. Through the planetary links in their studies, the students will be able to connect with the Earth and participate in critical thinking exercises to help them graduate with an inquisitive mind. 8 Bienvenidos a Woodlawn Una STEAM Escuela Planetaria Uno de los objetivos claves del proyecto federal Woodlawn School Improvement Grant (SIG por sus siglas en inglés) es hacerse una escuela del STEAM: Ciencia Tecnología Ingeniería Artes Matemáticas Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics Aumentar la cantidad y calidad de las actividades de STEAM ayudará a preparar a los estudiantes para carreras mejor remuneradas en nuestra economía basada en tecnología. En el año 2018, se prevé que 1 de cada 20 empleos globales estará relacionado con la ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas - este conjunto ocupa el segundo lugar entre las ocupaciones de mayor crecimiento (después de asistencia médica). Para hacernos una escuela del STEAM, nos hemos concentrado en un tema planetario para hacer Woodlawn único y conectar a nuestros estudiantes con expertos y organizaciones en la comunidad, la nación y el mundo. Por qué un tema planetario? El espacio exterior es un tema inclusivo, abierto e interesante para los estudiantes. Un programa temático del planetario permitirá a nuestros estudiantes no sólo a conectar sus estudios con los planetas y las estrellas, sino también los estimulará a estudiar nuestro propio planeta. Este campo es diverso - científicos de todo el mundo trabajan juntos, pues comparten vocabulario y objetivos en común. Las organizaciones espaciales buscan asociarse con escuelas. Existe ya el interés del Proyecto Vikingo de la Misión de Marte ( Viking Mars Mission Project ) (Portland), XCOR Aeroespacial ( XCOR Aerospace ), Educación de la NASA ( NASA Education ), OMSI y Museo Americano de la Historia Natural ( American Museum of Natural History ) (ciudad de Nueva York). Con un tema planetario, Woodlawn no estaría competiendo por donaciones y socios en comparación con las múltiples escuelas temáticas ambientales en Portland. Este tema podría ser parte del Salón al Aire Libre Woodlawn ( Woodlawn Outdoor Classroom ) y el Jardín de la Estación de Tierra ( Earth Station Garden ) en la zona pavimentada del área norte de la escuela. Este proyecto de eliminación del pavimento podría ser utilizado no sólo para la ciencia, sino también para la lectoescritura, observación o mediciones y reuniones comunitarias. Las actividades, tecnología y vocabulario de STEAM se incorporarían y enriquecerían los currículos actuales de lectoescritura, matemáticas, arte, ciencias sociales y ciencias naturales. A través de las referencias planetarias en sus estudios, los estudiantes serán capaces de unirse con la Tierra y participar en ejercicios de pensamiento crítico para ayudarles a graduarse con una mente inquisitiva.
