3 A food donation event was held at the Davidson Community Center. Story and photos by Mónica Barnkow While others might be worried about having a few more over for Thanksgiving dinner, Angel Caballero is ecstatic about his guests. All 300 of them. Caballero, who has served as Executive Director of the Davidson Community Center The Goods Life for over a quarter of a century, was thrilled to announce that the Center would be welcoming any and all visitors for the holiday. He predicted that many would be served. This is a very poor community, he said. There are many immigrants and very needy people. A commitment to service is a family trait. Caballero s parents, who were raising 8 children of their own, also served as foster parents for 33 years. While he spoke, volunteers in white T-shirts worked diligently this past Fri., Nov. 14 th to sort through bins of boxed and canned goods to distribute to community residents. The food donations included oil, rice, pasta, cereal, milk, tuna, sardines, and a variety of canned vegetables and legumes. It was the fourth consecutive year in which the Ford Motor Company Fund and the Hispanic Federation have joined forces for Lucha Contra el Hambre. The Lucha initiative brings food to the most vulnerable families, including many at the Davidson Community Center. 4 Rabbi with local roots killed in Jerusalem attack Story by Erik Cuello On Tues., Nov. 18 th, two Palestinians, armed with a gun, knives and axes, attacked and killed four people three Americans and one British national in a synagogue in an early morning attack in an ultra- Orthodox Jewish community of Jerusalem. Among those killed in the synagogue was Rabbi Moshe Twersky, whose family has deep ties to the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. Twersky, a 59-year-old father of five, had lived in Israel since leaving the United States in The attacks come after weeks of clashes regarding the religious site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel would respond with a heavy hand to the brutal murder of Jews who came to pray, and were eliminated by despicable murderers. Other leaders quickly denounced the attacks. Today s vicious terrorist attack represents a barbaric new low in the sad and outrageous history of such attacks, said Daniel Shapiro, U.S. Ambassador to Israel, in a statement. Twersky hailed from a family distinguished for its commitment to religious study and observance. His maternal grandfather was noted scholar Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, a longtime educator and dean at Yeshiva University in Northern Manhattan. In his lifetime, Solovietchik ordained more than 2,000 rabbis, and is regarded by many Judaic historians as a founder of modern Orthodoxy. Twersky s father was Isadore Twersky, a prominent educator who became the head of Judaic studies at Harvard University from 1978 to Twersky s brother, Mayer Twersky, is one of the overseers of Yeshiva University in New York, the flagship American school for Jewish Orthodox studies, and his brotherin-law, Jonathan Rosenblatt, is a rabbi at the Riverdale Jewish Center, an Orthodox synagogue located in the Bronx. The assailants were killed at the scene in a gun battle with police officers. A wounded police officer later died of his injuries. 6 10 tips to help smokers quit Celebrate more birthdays with the American Cancer Society by quitting smoking during this year s Great American Smokeout. If you or someone you love is looking to kick the habit this year, here are some helpful tips on how to break free from a smoking addiction. 1) Don t keep it a secret. Include your friends and family in your quitting process; they can offer much-needed support. 2) You re not alone. More and more people are trying to break free from cigarettes and there are lots of support options available. Many communities, employers, and health care organizations have free or low-cost counseling and support available to help you quit. Call your American Cancer Society at to find out what s available in your area. 3) Consider using medication to help you quit. There are prescriptions and overthe-counter medications that can help you deal with withdrawal symptoms or even help to reduce the urge to smoke. You ll want to talk to your doctor first, but some medicine could help. 4) Dump the memories. Clear the places where you usually smoke of anything that reminds you of cigarettes like lighters, ashtrays, or matches. Also ask other smokers not to smoke around you, and clean your house and car thoroughly to remove the smell of cigarettes. 5) Avoid places where smokers gather. Go to the movies or other places where smoking is not allowed. 6) Stay calm and stay busy. You may feel some nervous energy but it can be countered by physical and mental activities. Take long strolls and deep breaths of fresh air, and find things to keep your hands busy, like crossword puzzles or yard work. There are a lot of leaves on the ground at this time of year. 7) Talk to your doctor. Before you begin any plan for quitting smoking you should check with your doctor to see what might be the best approach for you. Remember, quitting smoking is very personal and there isn t one perfect method. 8) When the urge to smoke strikes, do something else. If you feel a craving for a cigarette coming on, take a deep breath, count to 10 and then do something else. Call a supportive friend. Do brief exercises such as push-ups, walking up a flight of stairs, or touching your toes. Anything that will take your mind off your cravings. 9) One will hurt. Many people fall into the trap of thinking that if they only have one cigarette it s okay. But even that one smoke can get you back in the habit of smoking full time. Keeping a supply of oral substitutes like carrots, apples, raisins, or gum handy can help. 10) Water, water everywhere. Drink lots of fluids to help curb cravings. Water is the best for this, and you ll want to pass up on coffee and alcohol if they trigger your desire to smoke. Op/Ed It s not easy to quit smoking. Studies have indicated that cigarettes are more addictive than heroin, and the first three weeks after you quit are said to be the most difficult. If you stumble along the way to giving up smoking, don t punish yourself. Just try again. The key is to stick with it. You can quit! The American Cancer Society can help. 8 Nailing it Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. spoke at the New York Hispanic Cosmetology and Beauty Chamber of Commerce s 4th Annual Business, Cosmetology Licensing and Regulations Symposium at Lehman College on Tues., Nov. 18th. At the event, Borough President Díaz discussed his recently introduced legislation calling for the creation of a letter grading system for cosmetology The health and safety of the people of this city is our top priority, said President Díaz. businesses, including nail salons, spas, barber shops, beauty parlors and other similar businesses throughout the five boroughs. The legislation was introduced at my behest by Councilmember Rafael Espinal, chairperson of the City Council s Consumer Affairs committee, he said. The new system will be modeled after the current letter grading system used by the Department of Health to monitor restaurants and food service establishments. The procedures used in many salons can almost be medical in nature, yet oversight of these businesses is very minimal, he added. Reports indicate that there are only 23 inspectors for the entire state. We have to change that. In the midst of tremendous upheaval two world wars and the Great Depression a vast movement of people, some 6 million African American descendants of the Antebellum South, fled the racial segregation and discrimination of Jim Crow laws for northern and western US cities. The Great Migration as it is commonly referred, caused a seismic societal demographic shift and left an indelible mark on the urbanization of America. NYC Parks Ebony Society asks artists to share their interpretations of this historical epoch and its impact. Submission Deadline Sunday, November 23, 2014 Exhibition Dates January 15 February 24, 2015 All submissions should include: A brief description of proposed artwork or artist s statement Up to 15 slides, photos, or images on a CD of representative work. Do not send original work Slide list, numbered to correspond to slides or photos with title, date, materials used and the dimensions of the work Artist s resume Self-addressed, stamped envelope (if you would like your submission returned to you) The work can be incomplete at the time of submission, but if so, please provide a summary or sketch Exhibition proposals will be reviewed and selected by the Ebony Society. All media are considered, but please note that the gallery has a very limited capacity for 3-dimensional work. Artwork may only be hung from moldings by use of monofilament and hooks. Incomplete proposals will not be considered.
