8-A By Lea Thompson lea@laprensasa.com El Machito, Chef Johnny Hernandez s newest addition to his food empire, brings the mesquitegrilled meats of Northern Mexico to San Antonio. Commissioners Court recently approved a Uniform Truancy Case Management Program that brings all districts together when it comes to cracking down on students skipping school. Through a series of intervention and prevention methods, the program aims to get students on the right track before they have to go to court. We know that truancy is really a symptom of a bigger issue and through individualized approaches, I think we can really reach many kids and get them back into schools with truancy court being the last resort, Northside Independent School District Director of Pupil Personnel Vicky Sullivan told La Prensa. The new program will address several areas that officials consider to be problems. We have 15 school districts in Bexar County so they all tend to kind of do things in a different way, under this agreement all See Truancy on page 6-A Holocaust survivor will never forget one of those specialties of Mexico, something that no one has ever really done well in San Antonio, like el pastor or las brazas and that no one has ever really in the style that Mexico is famous for, Hernandez told La Prensa. Cooking over wood is at the heart and soul of Mexican food, and how they cook everything.. it s not for the faint of heart, he added. El Machito is working with local cabrito vendors for their dishes. The menu also includes seafood dishes like pescado a la talla and traditional side dishes of fresh corn, beans and potatoes. Hernandez s chef-driven, vibrant style has become recognizable in all his businesses, both in the colorful decor found in his restaurants and the flavorful dishes. Hernandez s growing food empire includes his catering company, True Flavors, Casa Hernan, which is a hacienda available for parties and events, and his restaurants, La Gloria and La Fruteria. La Gloria opened at the Pearl Brewery in 2010, and became an By Jennifer Luna instant favorite for locals and visitors to experience the street foods of Mexico. 2 2-A LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 4 de mayo de 2014 Comentarios... COMMENTARY... The phrase is simple, yet profound. And too often, ignored. Younger Latinos may not know where the phrase originated. But those of my generation, who came of age in the late 1960s and 1970s, will instantly link it with the name Willie Velásquez. On May 9, I hope every Texan will learn about and honor the late Velásquez, recognizing the tremendous contribution he made to American democracy. That day will be the 70th anniversary of his birth, and by decree of the Texas Legislature, it will be the first observance of Willie Velásquez Day in our state. It s an honor that is long overdue. William C. Velásquez, of course, is one of our homegrown heroes in fact, his family lived a block down Huisache Avenue from mine. He attended Edgewood Elementary School and Holy Rosary Catholic School and graduated from Central Catholic High School here in San Antonio. He earned a degree in economics in 1966 from St. Mary s University. As the civil rights movement caught fire throughout the United States, Velásquez sought to make sure the Latino community was included. He became involved with the United Farm Workers and the National Council of La Raza, organizing Latinos to exercise political power. And he knew that, while political power can be a complex thing, it flows from a very simple act: voting. He knew that if Latinos voted, responsible government would respond. For that reason, in 1971 he founded the Citizens Voter Research and Education Project, which later became the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP). Velásquez left this world way too soon, in 1988 at the age of 44, a victim of kidney de la tiranía económica y bancaria, donde se puedan desarrollar las naciones y no solo se enriquezcan unos pocos. But his legacy lives on SVREP is still going strong, carrying out its mission: To empower Latinos and other minorities by increasing their participation in the American democratic process. Look at my career and those of other Latino elected officials the work of Willie Velásquez and those who joined him allowed Latinos to be elected at the local level. I know in my heart that I m in the Legislature today because of Willie s vision. We are the result of what happens when people participate in this representative democracy by voting and are able to elect the candidate of their choice. One of the authors of the legislation that made Willie Velásquez Day happen, Rep. Robert Alonzo, is a great example of that. Rep. Alonzo recently told a newspaper reporter that in 1986; only 15 percent of the Latinos in his Dallas district were registered to vote. Large numbers of Latinos in the United States, people who are fully eligible to vote, do not make it to the polls. Still more need to be registered and actually cast a ballot. Schools, parks, and libraries have been named after Velásquez. On May 9, I m sure yet more honors will be bestowed upon his memory. Higher education is the rule and not the exception The week that was, kicked off with Mayor Julián Castro touting his all too familiar agenda about the reason behind College Week as he puts it, This city is telling the world that we value education and we are putting our young people on a path to college success. This has been an ongoing theme for the past three years where young people, elementary school aged children, this time around from Briscoe Academy. The message is that San Antonio s Destination College Week involves not only students, but their parents. The numbers quoted are impressive, since 2010 nearly 50 percent of the city s high school graduates were enrolled in college. Needless to say, this is a number the mayor and SA2020 would like to see move up. They see this happening through the College Week initiative. If last year s family involvement is any indication, 2014 s College Week could see an even better turn out. The overall goal SA2020 and the mayor would like to see is college enrollment reaching 80 percent. The buzz phrase may soon well be, a college-going culture, after all the mayor would like to give the impression that this city, schools and young people stand out as an example of the brain power San Antonio has to offer. To insure that San Antonio s brain trust has the fuel it needs Clean up your backyard Vice President Joe Biden was recently in Ukraine, the highest ranking U.S. official to meet leaders of the nation under siege by the Russians. While there, Biden told his Ukraine counterparts the United States is promising an additional $50 million in aid for political and economic reforms in Ukraine amid the ongoing tension with Russia. That s a lot of money from a country that is dealing with a multi-trillion dollar deficit. A day doesn t pass that someone somewhere in this country isn t feeling the effects of the recently ended recession. There have been numerous shooting across the country and in most instances the shooter has had mental problems. Yet individual state governments are doing nothing more than paying lip service to the problem of mental health. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has a problem with inmates with mental illness and how to rehabilitate them. So big is the problem two Texas house committees are addressing the issue in an effort to see if these troubled inmates can be rehabilitated. The most recent shooting occurred at military installation at Ft. Hood in Killeen. The individual responsible for the spree that left four dead and 16 others injured, reportedly was undergoing evaluation for Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder. Managing Editor JOE SANDOVAL Assignments Editor to keep pace with the rest of the world, the foundation has been laid and the mayor has the foresight to capitalize on this. At the top of this is Rackspace. Graham Weston was offered a place to call home in California, but he felt that home should be San Antonio and now the Cloud hosting company is known worldwide. Rackspace spawned a collective brain trust of sorts, Geekdom. Here creative individuals have a workspace where they can bounce ideas off and, not to sound clichés, what sticks to the wall is seen as a positive from all those ideas. Just how successful has this Geekdom become may be seen with its purchase of the former Woll & Marx building. So from two floors at the Westin Tower, Geekdom now has an entire building. It gets better, Google is looking at setting up a fiber network that would see San Antonio s access to the Internet go from night to day and make San Antonio a hub for this activity that would open the doors to more tech companies that need to be in the fast lane. After all, the tech world exists in nano time. The adage that adding another ship in the harbor raises the level of the sea apparently has bearing. Within months of the Google announcement, communications giant AT&T said it was looking at 100 cities for its ultra-fast fiber network and among the list is San Antonio. Locally, state legislators have slashed the budget that handled mental illness. As a result individuals who need the help have to do without because of those budget cuts. These mental health issues are nothing new. Yet it seems that they re always tied to money or lack of money. However, the money is there. Unfortunately, to those who control the purse strings always have something or somewhere else to spend the money they do have. The announcement of $50 million for Ukraine is good news cycle item, but the problems at home are still not addressed. It seems that every day the U.S. is giving millions to other countries for the problems they have to deal with to keep them going. What about our people who are living with mental health illness? Don t they deserve the same kind of help? Rather than send the money elsewhere, why not take care of your own. One realizes that even if the government were to use that $50 million it would mean each state would only receive a million dollars. That s a million dollars the states don t now have. So many adages come to mind on what should be done with U.S. dollars and one has to ask why the government can t do something on its own to help its own people. But according to Alamo Healthcare Systems CEO and founder, Dr. Robert Lowry, there are a few things to keep in mind to avoid injury. With the way sports go these days, we don t really see kids seasonally besides football, but baseball and volleyball go year-round. We look at aerobics and stretching, because that s where a lot of the injuries come from, Lowry told La Prensa. Lowry founded Alamo Healthcare systems in 1997, with four specialty clinics located throughout San Antonio, including the neurology and sports rehabilitation clinic located in Southside San Antonio. Lowry graduated with his Bachelors in Biological sciences from UC Irvine, where he met his wife, Lynell, who is also a physician. They both attended medical school at George Washington University in Washington DC before working at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for their residency. He has been working with his wife in Bexar County since My goal in the long run is to get unemployed because everyone is healthy, Dr. Lowry said. While he stays busy with his practice, he occasionally works as a physician for local boxing matches. It really brings you back to that community... I do some of the professional types, but the golden gloves give you an opportunity to get to know people in the neighborhood, Lowry said. While there are many sports related injuries, the most common patients are adults. A lot of the adults that we re treating these days are folks that don t necessarily get regular exercise. We see people with a lot of knee pain and shoulder pain and a lot of miles on them, Lowry said. We also work on a lot of people with arthritis these days people who are going up and down the stairs and we can actually treat them without surgery, he added. Lowry recommends slowly reentering physical activities, and a great deal of stretching, until you know your body s limits. 5 4 de mayo de 2014 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 5-A Breast cancer survivors sought for new study By Elizabeth A. Allen Breast cancer survivors can now join a new study to learn how certain foods may reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. The study, Rx for Better Breast Health, is funded by Susan G. Komen and led by Amelie Ramirez, Dr. P.H., professor and director of the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Breast cancer survivors who participate will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Each group will get different cancer nutrition tools, possibly including several cooking demonstrations by Chef Iverson Brownell, who creates innovative culinary recipes that taste great and promote health. People interested in participating can call (210) to see if they qualify. We want to teach survivors the importance of a dietary plan full of foods with disease-fighting properties, Ramirez, who also is associate director for cancer prevention and health disparities and the Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Endowed Chair in Cancer Health Care Disparities at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the Closure... The dietary choices people make can positively or negatively influence inflammation, the process your body uses to protect itself in response to infection or injury, Michael Wargovich, Ph.D., study co-principal investigator and professor of molecular medicine and holder of the CTRC s Cancer Center Council Distinguished Chair in Oncology said. Although inflammation is a vital part of the healing process of wounds and infections, if inflammation becomes chronic, it actually causes illness, like cancer Some beneficial anti-inflammatory foods are deep marine fish, dark leafy green vegetables, bright multi-colored vegetables, black and green teas, and many spices and herbs. Science has taught us that eating these types of foods can benefit health, and we want to see how a diet of these foods can impact breast cancer survivors, Wargovich said. To join the study, breast cancer survivors must be ages and meet additional criteria. Participants who complete the study s three assessments including surveys, blood work, and other measurements at the CTRC will be given H-E-B gift cards. Hildebrand are required to turn right onto Broadway, where they can continue south or follow the signage toward N. New Braunfels to head north. We re trying to exercise discipline, because there have been other opportunities to open other restaurants, and multiple locations, but I need to see what the next best step is for us, Hernandez said. I want to make sure that we re using the best techniques, the best ingredients...but I think as long as we keep influencing our city as a food destination, we re on the right track, he added. Hernandez found his passions for food and entrepreneurship at an early age, but believes his success can be attributed to working hard and working with the right people. It s what I ve been doing for GOOD IS starting or expanding your own business. 19 years building teams to go execute a well-written game plan and menu. I ve been doing the same thing for a long time, we re just doing it in a restaurant setting with bigger teams, Hernandez said. If you have a concept that locals embrace, and visitors seek you for what s being done well and tastefully, that s a great formula for a business, he added. When asked if he would ever venture outside of the Mexican culinary world, he replied, No. I decided about seven years ago, that this is how I would end my career. There s so much left to do, that Mexico has inspired me to do, between the food and the artisans of Mexico you need two lifetimes to do it, Hernandez added. Holocaust... Jalnos said the prisoners would receive a slice of bread, some water, and soap shavings daily. She worked twelve-hour shifts at a factory refining small parts to machinery. On Easter Sunday in 1945, Jalnos and other prisoners were forced to go out on a death march. The soldiers would shoot at whoever would linger behind or collapsed from the walk. Amid the horror, Jalnos stopped and reminisced about the arrival of their freedom. And then the Americans arrived, Jalnos said. They said we were free. But Jalnos was alone. She would later find out her sister Anna would be released four weeks later. I didn t know who was alive, she said. Jalnos went back home and received a notice that her sister and brother were still alive. Now, Jalnos lives in San Antonio with her sister, Anna Rado. Hope kept our faith, Jalnos said. Jalnos added how in the beginning talking about her experiences was difficult, until the 60s, she began to take comfort in opening up about the terror she endured. Now, if someone wants to listen; I ll talk, she said. Although the experience was traumatizing, it didn t keep Jalnos from having a normal life. After she was liberated, Jalnos married in October 1949 and traveled to Texas. She has four children and five grand-children. She worked as a seamstress and her husband as a plumber. Work makes you free in this country, she said. Her past tragic, but her message classic. Be grateful to have a nice bed, a good breakfast, Jalnos said. Be grateful. Jalnos had been invited by Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society, to share her experience. History professor Edward Westermann said we are fortunate to hear Jalnos story. We have this window of time and that window is rapidly getting smaller, he said. In 10 years, there may not be any survivors in this community that are will or able to continue to do their testimony. Local writers receive $10,000 grant Truancy... cases now get filed in one court, that resolves issues about inconsistencies and filings, Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Judge Rogelio Lopez said. Under the new program, all students have to meet the same requirements before being sent to court. The requirements and prevention strategies are currently being developed by county and school district officials. As the largest school district in the city, NISD has been instrumental in providing efforts and sees a great potential for the program. Northside has a concern with truancy as does any other school district, so the coming together of minds is in the best interest in getting students back in schools and making truancy court the last 4 de mayo de 2014 (continued from page 1-A) resort, Sullivan added. That s our focus. According to Sullivan, NISD currently takes a very individualistic approach to truancy and even developed an attendance video that all students in the district are shown at one point or another. It s personal in Northside, what that means is we take the time to gather the relevant individuals in a meeting to discuss the issues that are causing the nonattendance for those students, so, you would have an administrator, a student, a parent, possibly a nurse, possibly a counselor, possibly a probation officer, it just depends on the circumstances involving the student, Sullivan added. The meetings are triggered once a student has three unexcused absences within a four week period. Under state rules, a student is in violation of the Compulsory Attendance Law if he or she has three unexcused absences in a four week period or 10 unexcused absences in a six month period. Truancy is considered a Class C misdemeanor and carries up to a $500 fine. According to Rogelio, when students stay home from school, they re most likely doing things they shouldn t be doing. Ninety percent of all inmates start out in the truancy court, Lopez said. Truancy is a gateway to juvenile crime and truancy is strongly correlated to high school dropout rate, one out of every four high school freshmen does not graduate. Lopez concluded that at the end of the day, the program is about giving students a better chance at success.

7 4 de mayo de 2014 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 7-A Children s Museum to feature new Discovery Camps By Natalie Bobadilla natalie@laprensasa.com Summer break is right around the corner, but that doesn t mean learning has to take a hiatus. Beginning June 16, the San Antonio Children s Museum will once again hold a variety of fun and educational Discovery Camps geared towards children ages four through 10. We have nine weeks of camps that will explore the intersection between science, art and creativity, San Antonio Children s Museum Education Director Robin Voight told La Prensa. Typically, the museum hosts three different camps that each last nine weeks, this year they will offer three new camp options that will explore different themes every week adding up to a nine week camp period at the museum. One of the new camps is Sensational Summer, it s all about the science and art that make up the five senses. Kids will create musical instruments, design sound telescopes, uncover how smell affects taste and find inspiration through the five senses to create art. Another new camp, Amazing Explorations, will allow children to explore land, water, air and even outer space. Using a compass and the stars above, the children will plan a trip in a space ship and will investigate world cultures through both theatre and dance. During LEGO Camp, children will build a city one week, then they ll make vehicles and lastly they ll create machines, all out of LEGOS. Older children will have a chance to build and program their own LEGO robots. A child could come all summer long and explore something different every week, Voight said. In comparison to past camps at the Children s Museum, Voight said the museum is taking more of a STEM approach this year because they re stepping more into the content of the new Children s Museum to be unveiled June It s kind of a little mini taste of all the types of things people will see in the new museum, more STEM activities and more of that kind of where science and art meet, Voight added. According to Children s Museum Marketing and Public Relations Associate, Bruce Graham, Discovery Camps are not only a great way to keep kids active during the summer, it s also an opportunity for kids to get out and explore some concepts that they haven t gotten to explore before. They re going to take something away from each camp, something new that they ll be able to grow on as they continue their education, Graham said. To register for any or all three of the camp sessions visit SAKids.org/SummerCamp. Children can soak up summer while learning about science and art at a Discovery Camp. Just a Thought: Graduation time Well it s that time of the year for high school and university students in San Antonio to get ready to walk the stage for graduation ceremonies. Students from everywhere in the metro area are gearing up for the parties, celebrations of long anticipated completion of at least a four year marathon of classes that culminates in a degree or diploma. Many graduating high school students who can t afford the sticker value of a college education are frantically looking for scholarships and other avenues to pay for their degrees. Many parents are doing their best to help their kids achieve that goal with financial help by working two jobs and taking out loans. For many families in San Antonio this will be the first generation to obtain a college degree. The journey actually begins when a student graduates from middle school. This puts them on the path to achieve a higher education and sets the tone for what they may choose for their lifelong career. As high school prepares them with basic life skills to allow them to compete in the workforce, it comes to fruition their senior year when they begin the journey of choosing whether to go to college or not and which college or tech school to attend to fulfill their career choices. For many the hardship of the financial burden is often so overwhelming to the point of discouragement, that they either give up or indefinitely postpone their dreams of a better life and financial security. The students of Bexar County live in a somewhat more positive environment than most. Our community values education and therefore works diligently to assist families in being able to send their children forward in their pursuit of higher education. This support comes in the form of scholarships and financial assistance from the many individuals and organizations and foundations within Bexar County. These groups work year round raising funds to be able to award deserving students the opportunity to make a better life for themselves and their families. It also encourages those students who succeed in obtaining their educational goals to return to their community and become productive citizens who pay it forward. One of the many educational organizations whose sole purpose is to ensure that local students are given the chance to receive a scholarship to pursue their education is the La Prensa Education Foundation spearheaded by Millie Duran. Millie, wife of La Prensa By Steve Walker Publisher Tino Duran has successfully raised over $2 million in scholarship monies over the years. Recently I was privileged to cover this year s fundraiser gala as I have done numerous times in the past. As an active member of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists (SAAHJ) I have also been involved in a number of fundraising events for aspiring young journalists. In fact in August we will host our annual SAAHJ Gala Ceremony that will award scholarships to worthy students. One example of a success story is Francisco Vara-Orta, a former recipient. He is now the current President of SAAHJ and a reporter for the San Antonio Express-News. There are many other organizations, foundations and individuals who feel strongly about ensuring that the educational future will be bright for not only students, but the entire community. This is a win-win for everyone in Bexar County. As always, just thought. Steve Walker is a Vietnam Veteran and former Justice of the Peace and journalist.

11 04 de mayo de 2014 This Week In Sports Holt on Silver s decision to ban Sterling The NBA is built upon equality and diversity. There is no room for racism or bigotry in our league. All of us at Spurs Sports & Entertainment fully support the decision made today by Commissioner Silver. Romo feels good Despite coming off back surgery last December, Romo told ESPN s Tim MacMahon during the Dallas Mavericks-San Antonio Spurs NBA playoff game on Monday night, I m feeling good. He began the offseason program last week. San Antonio Stars ready for 2014 Season By Jessica Duran jessica@laprensasa.com It s the month of May and that means the start of the WNBA season. This year is a season of positive expectations for the San Antonio Stars. A total of 16 players are on the training camp roster including former Notre Dame guard Kayla McBride, the third pick in the WNBA draft via Stars. The addition of McBride will help the team offensively as the Stars only averaged 72.1 points per game and shot 40 percent from the field compared to their opponents 77.9 points per and 45.5 percent shooting from the field. Stars forward Danielle Adams led the team with 14.4 points last season. The Stars roster this season is extremely young. Only four players on the current roster have five years or more experience in the WNBA, including 15 year veteran guard and team captain Becky Hammon. Hammon s season was cut short last year after suffering a season-ending injury to her knee. Over the off-season she looked to gain not only leadership skills but also coaching skills. Hammon recently sat behind the San Antonio Spurs bench during their regular season to learn from the best of the best, coach Gregg Popovich. Another key player returning from injury is Stars guard Sophia Young-Malcom, who was also sideline due to a damaging ACL tear in her knee playing in the Chinese league before the 2013 season began. Eager and never more ready, Young-Malcom looks to help lead alongside Hammon to another Western Conference title and their first WNBA Championship. The Stars season opener is May 17, tipoff time is at 7 p.m. Scan with QR reader for more sports news from La Prensa. Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso celebrate together during a win over Bayern Munich. (Courtesy photo) Real Madrid KO's Bayern Munich, advances to Champions League final By Jamie Trecker FOX Soccer Cristiano Ronaldo made UEFA Champions League history Tuesday, becoming the highest-scorer ever in a European campaign as Real Madrid routed Bayern Munich in Bavaria 4-0 Tuesday night. The result put Real through to the finals in Lisbon 5-0 on aggregate and dealt a massive blow to Bayern's pride: this was just their first loss to Madrid at home in 11 games, and it came at the worst possible time. Real's fabled "La Decima" is now in sight for Real, and they await Tuesday's result to find out their opponent as Atletico take on Chelsea in London. Were Atletico to win, it would set up the sixth same-country Champions League final -- but the first featuring two teams from the same city. From the start, Bayern looked ner- vous and out of sorts, wilting in the glare of their own arena. Before the match, both managers had stressed the mental aspect of the contest and both were correct -- it was Carlo Ancelotti's team that were by far the more composed. Real signaled their intent after just nine minutes when keeper Manuel Neuer took an unwise constitutional, allowing Gareth Bale a free volley from 35 yards on his net. That attempt sliced wide, but the fans around the ground drew in their breath, sensing it was a harbinger. They were correct. Eight minutes later to the second, Sergio Ramos outleapt everyone at the far edge of the penalty area to meet Luka Modric's corner, and pound home the header that break the match open. Neuer was not to blame; Dante and David Alaba were the ones who had gone missing this time around, and while Ramos' hops were majestic, the fact was, he had no one within two yards of him. Three minutes later, Ramos would ice the game. Toni Kroos unwisely fouled Bale and Angel di Maria stepped up, and his free-kick pinged in to Ramos -- again left unguarded by Dante. This was a far more egregious error as Ramos was able to run into space without a Bayern player anywhere in sight. All the back could do was kick the ground in frustration while Ramos was buried by his teammates in the corner. Then, cometh the hour, cometh the man. Ronaldo, who has been Real's dynamo over these years, made history in the 34th minute with a clinical counterattack. Modric began it with an outlet up to Karim Benzema, who lobbed the ball out to Bale. Bale laid it on a plate for Ronaldo, and he made no mistake. Madrid...(Continued from 1-B) Things did not change in the second half. Guardiola belatedly brought on Javi Martinez to bulk up his leaky midfield, but all that did was allow Real Madrid to defend in numbers. Little changed and the game petered out. In fact, the stands had started to clear at the half, with the pessimistic -- or coldly realistic -- Bayern fans and their media, deciding they had seen enough. As poor as Bayern were over the two legs, Real were brilliant. Daniel Carvajal stuck to Franck Ribery like a leg-iron, shackling the French star and eliminating his service. Modric, who has been Madrid's best late-season player, was again immaculate, assisting on two goals and getting back to defend when needed. And then there is Pepe, who can be a goon but not here. The Portuguese international was the rock Real built their firstgame lead upon and was the cool head on Tuesday night, making sure that every time Ribery or Arjen Robben ran at his keeper, that there were three men in white shirts in between them and the goal. Silver...(Continued from 1-B) There were some blemishes on the game. Xabi Alonso picked up a card for a silly foul that sees him suspended for the final. He remained on the turf long after the card had been taken out, knowing what it meant. And, in the first half, Ribery was seen belting Carvajal across the face. Referee Pedro Proenca didn't see it, but the French star could take a ban on video evidence. And of course, for Bayern, there is plenty of egg on their faces. They clearly slipped a gear after winning the Bundesliga title in historic time, and that lack of focus cost them here dearly. But for Real and Ancelotti, now chasing history? The night was all glory in the chill of the Bavarian spring. "The players have done very well, huge congratulations to them all," Ancelotti said after the match. "I have said that we have that strong mentality and we showed it. When working together you can show the quality to put together a perfect game." Last fall, 20 Team Up Challenge semifinalists received $2,500 to help start their service learning projects. The five champions were selected based on presentations made to the Team Up Challenge review committee, online voting and overall commitment to making a community impact over the course of the academic year. Each team received their big checks during halftime of the Spurs vs. Lakers game held at the AT&T Center, were general manager R.C. Buford congratulated all the five Team Up Challenge Champions representatives. Harris Middle School (NEISD): The Harris Middle School Green Team worked to expand their garden this year. The class maintains the Harris Community Garden, which harvests organic produce and has student-led composting and vermicomposting teams. The group regularly hosts community education classes to teach their peers and adults how to create their own garden. Additionally, the group hosts weekly farmers markets with items from the Harris Community Garden. With the $20,000 the group plans to install a state of the art greenhouse and an outdoor kitchen to offer summer cooking classes. Rodriguez Elementary School (Seguin ISD): The second graders started Baking with Books to read books that correspond to curriculum and bake a recipe that relates to that book. The group visited different community organizations to deliver their baked goods, learn about the services provided and to volunteer with the organization. Baking with Books visited a senior citizens center, the local fire department, the humane society and more throughout the school year. The group plans to use the award money to continue their outreach efforts. Stevens High School (NISD): When the Gifted/Talent Leadership program discovered that several hundred students at their campus have family members deployed abroad in our Armed Services the group created Operations from Stevens With Love. The program works to send custom-made care packages to soldiers overseas. The group recruited the entire Stevens campus of more than 3,000 students in the project, to include high school newspapers, recording of band performances and the essentials like socks and shampoo in care packages. With the $20,000, Operation from Stevens With Love will continue sending care packages and grow the program to include the feeder middle and elementary schools. Wilson Elementary School (SAISD): Is close to being considered within a food desert, meaning no grocery store is located within a mile of the campus. The students decided to create a Garden Club and planted 16 garden beds to harvest fall, winter and spring crops. The students provided their fresh produce- which included over 60 pounds of lettuce, broccoli, beets, carrots, peas and more- to families of students at the school who may not be able to afford fresh, organic produce. With the $20,000 the group will be able to operate their community garden throughout the summer, start a young master gardeners program and continue to maintain their gardens for years to come. Zachry Middle School (NISD): Zachry Middle School s Community of Readers wants to increase literacy levels within their district. The group has partnered with Knowlton Elementary, one of their feeder schools, to start and after school mentor program. The Zachry Middle School students visit Knowlton Elementary every other week to read with the children. The group discovered many students do not own age appropriate books at home. As part of the project, Zachry students read a book together with Knowlton students and each Knowlton student takes a copy of that book home with them. With the $20,000 the group will be able to expand their reading program to other elementary schools within their district. The Team Up Challenge encourages students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world, bringing education alive in powerful ways. Students create projects that address needs that will help improve their community in one of five categories: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness or Uniformed Services. As a premier initiative of Silver & Black Give Back, Spurs and Rampage players have worked alongside the students to help bring their vision to life.

Dame entendimiento Canonization Mass commemoration looks back at San Antonio scenes Special to La Prensa More than 1,000 people of all ages joined Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, in a happy celebration of the April 27 canonization of Blessed John XXIII and Blessed John Paul II in a two-hour liturgy at Church of the Holy Spirit Parish that was full of jubilant energy on Divine Mercy Sunday. Hundreds came early for the 3 p.m. celebration in hopes of getting good seats, only to discover an earlier Mass still in progress. They waited patiently in the narthex until it ended; when pews emptied, it wasn t for long. Later arrivals stationed themselves along the outer aisles, in the back of the church, in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the narthex. Observing this, Archbishop Gustavo noted that the huge turnout eloquently testified to the belief across the archdiocese in the Divine Mercy of Jesus as well and the two beloved pontiffs being raised to the altars. He pointed out that the Spanish liturgy in progress when he arrived at the church at 1:30 also had packed the church to overflowing, adding enthusiastically that the churches are not only full on Easter. Before starting his homily, he invited a group of seminarians gathered in the narthex to come forward and stand behind him as he preached. In all, 24 seminarians, each clad in black cassock and white surplice, marched up the aisles to a loud chorus of sustained applause as they gathered in an arc behind Archbishop Gustavo. The archbishop read the official decree, which the Holy Father read before an estimated audience of some 800,000 people in St. Peter s Square and its vicinity in Rome Sunday morning. At the beginning of the outdoor Mass in front of St. Peter s Basilica. For the honor of the Blessed Trinity, the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the increase of Christian faith; by the authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and my own; after due consideration and frequent prayer, after seeking the counsel of my brother bishops, we declare and define that Blessed John XXIII and Blessed John Paul II be saints; we enroll them among the saints and decree that they are to be venerated as such by the whole church. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Immediately, the entire church resounded with enthusiastic applause for the long-awaited announcement. Archbishop Gustavo called out in a loud voice, Saint John XXIII, pausing to wait for a response from the audience, which didn t come at first. He repeated it, and the congregation responded, Pray for us! When he called out, Saint John Paul II, the congregation was ready mad responded, Pray for us! Next, Archbishop Gustavo repeated both petitions in Spanish, but the response came in English. When this beloved saint celebrated Mass in San Antonio on Sept. 13, 1987, the archbishop reminded listeners, He urged us to find God's mercy in the confessional. In his homily in San Antonio, he said: The ministry of reconciliation is a fundamental part of the Church s life and mission. Without overlooking any of the many ways in which Christ s victory over sin becomes a reality in the life of the Church and the world, it is important for me to emphasize that it is above all in the Sacrament of Reconciliation that the power of the redeeming blood of Christ is made effective in our personal lives. He noted that the saint s words continue to echo in the hearts of those in the Archdiocese of San Antonio who recently celebrated 24 straight hours of confession. During that time, he declared, the light of Christ was made to shine brightly, helping believers and non-believers alike to discover that through the Divine Mercy of God, unconditional love is possible and attainable. We need only seek out God s forgiveness. Many who attended the Mass stayed for a reception afterward in the Holy Spirit Parish Hall, during which a continuous slide show portrayed numerous images of the joy and energy of the historic 22hour visit of St. John Paul II to San Antonio in 1987, when well-wishers were so excited to see him that the pontiff spontaneously changed his plans and rode through most of the city in his popemobile rather than the limousine called for by planners. He later remembered the welcome of San Antonio as the best of the entire nine-city tour. para seguir tus preceptos, pues quiero meditar en tus maravillas Salmo 119:27 Canonization of Archbishop Gustavo (Courtesy photo) CHURCH DIRECTORY EL SENDERO ASSEMBLY OF GOD 5400 Evers Just inside Loop 410, Raúl C. Dónde he de buscar sino en el tesoro de tu corazón, que contiene todas las riquezas de la clemencia y generosidad divinas? Sin embargo... dejo en tus manos mi petición, April 28 - May 4, 2014 Adult MEET SINGLES right now! No paid operators, just real people like you. Browse greetings, exchange messages and connect live.
