Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with us, for he had a dream of world peace, compassion and nonviolence. May it come true in reality. May we all have a good New Year and lots of luck, keeping those helpful resolutions we made that can make life happier and healthier. There is so much we can do, especially with all the good things available at the Hudson Guild Neighborhood Center. Keep up with current Events with Alex on Monday mornings at 11, and don t forget all the exercise classes: Tai Chi with Pin Pin Fridays at 11, Aerobics with Audrey Mondays at 1:10, Zumba away the pounds we put on from all that holiday feasting on s at 10:30 with Tia and reduce your risk of falls in Yoga with Margarita s at 2:30. 6 Elliott-Chelsea NORC News Happy New Year to all of our friends and neighbors in the Elliott-Chelsea NORC! We're excited to announce that Maria Alvarez has joined us as our new NORC Nurse. Maria will be available for walk-ins and appointments on Tuesdays and s from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Blood Pressure screenings will continue on mornings from 10 to 11, but feel free to stop by at any time to meet Maria. She is looking forward to getting to know all of our NORC members! Our Lunch & Learns continue every Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Join us for a hot meal and presentation on various health topics. On Jan 6th, the Fire Department will be offering information on Fire Safety, and on Jan 13th, a representative from NY Legal Assistance Group will present about health care proxies, living wills and other advance directives. On s beginning Jan 29th, we will be hosting a Quilting Workshop in partnership with MoreArt. The weekly workshop will take place from 11:30 am to 1 pm and the finished quilt will be displayed to the community in the Hudson Guild Gallery in March. Are you interested in quilting with us? 9 Par ticipant Spotlight: Bill Lar mer In our quest to learn about talented and dedicated people who contribute to society and to our programs, we were happy to interview Bill Larmer. Bill was born in Newport News, Virginia. His father died when he was a baby and he was raised by a single mother; he also has a sister named Pam. He came to NYC at the age of 21 because he was interested in becoming a fashion designer and the opportunities for this specialization were good in New York. Bill established himself in NYC, made a lot of friends and developed strong life-long friendships with them. First, he went to Parsons School оf Design and, at 22 years old, was an assistant at Oscar de La Renta, doing sketches and illustrations. Since then, he has had a number of other design jobs, eventually working as a fashion illustrator, and had famous clients such as Henri Bendel's. During his career, Bill illustrated several books and his drawings appeared in the New York Times and in Sotheby's. After this, he returned to school at Fashion Institute of Technology, where he got his degree in fashion design. One day, Bill saw a poster in FIT that said, do you want to study abroad? He signed up and got an opportunity to study Italian art and design in Florence, Italy. Bill is very proud of having taken advantage of this opportunity. Even after all this time, he remembers the field trips he took in Italy and the knowledgeable professors he admired. Some time later, upon returning to the fashion industry, Bill worked in the production field, working with various other professionals in the field of design and even with younger designers. When Bill retired, he discovered Hudson Guild and appreciated the warm atmosphere and activities that it offers. He especially wants to thank Dorothy (Social Services Manager) for her help and support and Bernice (Reception) for her warm welcome every time he walks in the door. Bill is very glad to take so many classes at Hudson Guild s Neighborhood Center. In fact, it is in the pottery classes that he finally received creative joy back in his life. He has also taken other classes such as digital photography and a printmaking class from the Museo del Barrio which led to his work being exhibited there. Also, his work has been shown in the annual Art Jam at 26 th Street. To Bill, art is very therapeutic and he has developed a deep connection with it. He is able to make art come alive and create another world with harmony and tranquility. Bill is very appreciative of Hudson Guild for all of the support and services it provides. He greatly enjoys learning and is always proud to say, you re never too old to study and try new things.
