A Message from the President Annual reports always provide an opportunity for careful analysis of the activities carried out by an institution. In our case, this report allows us to recall and recognize the wide range of activities and services the Alumni Association offers all alumni who wish to keep in contact with their school. I am sure that, once you have read it, you will agree with me that the spirit that moved the first IESE alumni to found the association in 1959 has been kept alive with the same vitality this year. Furthermore, year after year, thanks to everyone s efforts and support, it is flexible enough to adapt to the new needs of our increasingly international community. Over the past academic year, the Alumni Association has continued to sustain intense and growing activity in several areas, including continuing education, career development support for alumni and access to IESE research. All our initiatives and activities have received support from members of the IESE staff, who have remained close to us on a personal level and as an institution. For our part, as alumni, we have also continued to enthusiastically support IESE s work throughout the world by contributing to its activities and projects, spreading its name and recommending its programs. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of IESE for your constant support and to urge you once again to keep it up, because sharing IESE s mission and supporting its advancement means working for better companies and a fairer society. I hope reading these pages will have the same effect on you as it has on me: to fill you with pride and help you discover new opportunities to get involved. Antonio González-Adalid (MBA 75) IESE Alumni Association 3
THE IESE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The IESE Alumni Association works to strengthen ties between the 38,000 IESE alumni and IESE, and among the 38,000 alumni themselves. It was created at the end of the first senior management program in 1959 as proof of the satisfaction and appreciation of the first IESE graduating class. Those first executives decided to find a way to maintain close ties with their school and professors and, at the same time, to continue their education and their unconditional support of their newly established school. In 53 years, the association has grown alongside IESE and passed on the enthusiasm of those first students to subsequent graduating classes, who have not hesitated to carry on the torch. Today, the association is a living testament to IESE s diversity all over the world. The IESE Alumni Association constitutes one of the most integrated academic and business communities in the world and maintains one of the highest membership rates in the sector. MISSION The mission of the Alumni Association is to bring together alumni who seek to maintain ties with IESE, promote continuous education activities and encourage collaboration among alumni and with IESE. AIMS The association s aims are to: Promote and develop continuous education for alumni throughout the world. Preserve and foster professional and social relationships among IESE alumni. Support IESE in its task of helping companies serve people and society by furthering its educational goals and promoting management research and instruction. Increase awareness of IESE and its activities. 38,031 alumni 109 countries represented 2,126 people downloaded e-conferences 2,614 attended the Global Alumni Reunion 925 attended MBA and EMBA reunions 285 Continuous Education sessions 32,178 participated in association activities IESE alumni constitute one of the most integrated academic and business communities in the world and maintain one of the highest membership rates in the sector. 4 Annual Report

CONTINUOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Continuous Education program ensures that IESE alumni receive continuous education and remain in contact with their professors. In short, it gives them access to the latest management research trends, along with the school s humanistic vision and social values. During the academic year, the Continuous Education program continued its high level of activity and participation. There was remarkable growth in attendance of sessions held outside the Barcelona and Madrid campuses: a 25 percent increase in participation compared to the previous year. This year, over 70 professors on the faculty taught at least one session, which demonstrates the wide range of topics that are appreciated and the strong commitment of the faculty to the continuous education of alumni. It is also worth highlighting that the Continuous Education program has extended its presence to a wide range of countries to serve an increasingly international community thanks to the initiative and continued support of the regional chapters. Making sessions available as e-conferences is becoming increasingly important as a way to promote quality continuous education in any corner of the world. This academic year, 1,169 users accessed sessions a total of 8,105 times. The collaboration of alumni and their companies by means of sponsorships is undoubtedly one of the main reasons it has been possible to increase the number of sessions held off campus. This collaboration has led to significant savings, thus allowing the number of sessions to be multiplied. The association would like to thank the alumni who have provided facilities and to invite them to continue promoting IESE s international presence. They included the following: TIMELY AND ONGOING ANALYSIS OF THE ECONOMIC SITUATION Professors from the Department of Economics gave several sessions throughout the year to analyze the evolution of the international economy. They included: December 9. Barcelona. The Economic Situation in Spain. Profs. Á. Argandoña, A. Subirà and P. Videla. December 15. Madrid. Facing the Recession: A Spanish and International Overview. Profs. J. Díaz-Giménez and J. J. Toribio. REFLECTIONS ON BUSINESS BEFORE THE CRISIS: 50 KEYS FOR IMPROVEMENT Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Seville and Zaragoza Based on the macroeconomic situation, Professor Chiesa gave a session on the different business strategies that managers and business people can adopt to achieve improvements that will allow their companies to better compete in the turbulent markets that surround us. Effective Management of Professional Networks Barcelona, Washington, New York and Munich Professor Marta Elvira analyzed the nature of professional networks and the role they play in promoting effective leadership, better examining our own networks and learning to leverage them better, with an eye to future development. The professor highlighted that it can be very useful to look at society as a social network rather than a collection of individuals. She also encouraged participants to take stock of their social capital and shared some practical exercises to help them better understand and leverage their professional networks. THE IMPACT OF WEB 2.0 ON THE COMPANY Zaragoza, Moscow, Andorra and Palma de Mallorca At this session, Professor Sandra Sieber analyzed a series of cases of businesses that have adopted Web 2.0 tools to connect people in various ways, establish new ways to serve the market or open new paths for innovation. She also presented the results of a global study of over 100 companies in 20 countries that indicates that the business world is still in the initial stages of wide-scale adoption of these tools. Along the way, she identified the principal challenges for effectively integrating these new technologies into companies. ENTREPRENEURSHIP LATER IN LIFE: STARTING, BUYING OR INVESTING Barcelona, October 1 Professor Roure explained how one can be an entrepreneur later in life by sharing the success stories of Ricardo Fisas, the founder of Natura Bissé; Enrique Quemada, the CEO of ONEtoONE Capital Partners; and Luis Malagarriga, the chairman of Kubi Wireless. BUT IS THERE FUNDING FOR MY COMPANY? Madrid, November 22 Jorge Soley, a senior lecturer in financial management at IESE, analyzed how small and medium-sized enterprises can find funding in the current economic climate. Professor Soley invited business people to supply companies with some minimum resources so they can avoid taking on excessive credit risk, especially in the area of small businesses. The era of leverage has ended, he said. INVESTMENT IN LATIN AMERICA New York, December 1 Over one hundred alumni and guests attended the Continuous Education session Growth and Investment Opportunities: Latin America and the United States, Side by Side, which was held at IESE s New York Center. COMPANIES AND CORRUPTION Madrid, December 4 This session analyzed the role of the company vis-à-vis corruption. Professor Domènec Melé asserted that there is a strong correlation between rigorous ethics and economic benefits for the company. One of the reasons Melé gave to justify ethical behavior is the future value of the company. This often means having to forgo opportunistic behavior that would lead to better results, he said. Pedro Montoya, the Group Chief Compliance Officer at EADS, was also a speaker at the session. The World in 2011 Madrid, January 18 For the second consecutive year, Daniel Franklin, the editor of the well-known annual report made by The Economist titled The World in 2011, analyzed the trends of In Franklin s view, the year was a tale of two economies: a rich world struggling with weak recovery and no job growth, and an emerging world growing four times faster. BUILDING RESPECTED COMPANIES Munich, March 1 Jordi Canals, the Dean of IESE, and Franz Haniel, the Chairman of the Board of Haniel Holding, offered over 100 alumni in Munich some ideas on how to build quality, respected companies. During the session, Canals spoke on topics such as the identity crisis and lack of objectives that companies are experiencing today, taken from his recent book Building Respected Companies. For his part, Franz Haniel shared his experiences with alumni, as well as the challenges involved in operating in emerging markets such as Eastern Europe and China. BUILDING THE COMPANY OF 2020 Barcelona, March 11 The company of 2020 requires a much more flexible model than the one currently in place, based on the knowledge economy and strong brand commitment, although without IESE Alumni Association 9
Continuous Education Program How New Media is Changing Media Companies... And Other Companies Barcelona, March 4 This special session analyzed how new media are changing companies and how they are affecting the most influential ones. The session was held in roundtable format and divided into two panels. The first, which focused on new media and entertainment, was led by Bill Baker, President Emeritus at Channel Thirteen in New York and a member of IESE s International Advisory Board, who analyzed the current state of the media industry. The second session was led by Jay Ireland, the President and CEO of GE Asset Management; Tom Kane, former President of CBS Stations; Edward T. Reilly, the President and CEO of the American Management Association; and Tom Rogers, the President and CEO of TiVo. The panelists were all cautiously optimistic about the economic recovery of the United States. I think we re at a point that could be described as the eye of a very large hurricane, said Reilly, who noted the improvement of economic indicators. But long-term growth will only come through a great deal of leadership to meet current challenges, especially the deficiencies of the education system in the United States. Speakers: Gerry Byrne, Senior Vice President, Ad Genesis Digital Carmen DiRienzo, President & CEO, V-Me Network Tom Kane, Former President, CBS Stations Tom Rogers, President & CEO, TiVo Inc. Chris Vollmer, Partner & Leader, Booz & Co. Moderators: Prof. Josep Valor, IESE Bill Baker, President Emeritus, Channel Thirteen Jay Ireland, President & CEO, GE Asset Management Steve Murphy, President, Christie s Edward T. Reilly, President & CEO, American Management Assn. Prof. Nuria Mas, IESE overlooking the fundamental role of industry, which will nonetheless change as well. This special Continuous Education session was led by Víctor Grifols, the President of Laboratorios Grifols; Julio Rodríguez (PDG 97), the President of Schneider Europe; Javier Robles (PDG 90), the President of Danone Spain; and Andreu Mas-Colell, the Catalan Minister of the Economy, accompanied by professors Antonio Argandoña, Núria Mas, Alfredo Pastor and Pedro Nueno. LEADERSHIP: AN INTERNAL JOURNEY Madrid, March 24 Professor Santiago Álvarez de Mon dedicated this session to reflecting on the concept of leadership and made a distinction between formal power and personal authority. Leadership is the ability to influence the behavior and attitudes of others through authentic, stimulating conversation; it is the quality of that relationship. It is impossible to achieve this if one s internal dialogue is not renewed, deepened and consciously lived. RELATIONS BETWEEN COMPANIES AND NGOs Barcelona, March 24 The la Caixa Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility organized a roundtable discussion on Relations between Companies and NGOs: Conflict, Cooperation or New Role Assignments? In the words of the moderator, Professor Antonio Argandoña, the invited guests came from a company with a social vocation, a foundation dedicated to social promotion and a foundation that must function as a company. Against this attractive backdrop, Sergio Loughney (Abertis), José Ignacio González-Aller (Codespa) and Manuel Almirall (Fundació Futur) put forth different approaches to relations and defended their arguments with specific examples. Relational Leadership Cologne, May 3 Professor Alberto Ribera analyzed the different aspects of interpersonal relations and some considerations about self-knowledge that should be taken into account to develop good leadership. The professor warned about the habit of automatic thought that can distort perceptions of reality and personal relationships at work. Generalization, prejudice and prematurely worrying about others reactions are some common traps that can be obstacles to leadership capacity. To overcome them, 10 Annual Report
Continuous Education Program it is necessary to intentionally and in a sustained manner develop positive thoughts about others that get rid of this tendency toward negative judgment. COLLECTIVE BARGAINING REFORM Madrid, May 17 Labor reform has also been the topic of several Continuous Education sessions. On May 17, Professor Sandalio Gómez invited Juan Antonio Sagardoy, the honorary president of Sagardoy Abogados. The professor reminded participants that the basics of collective bargaining include adapting the content to the company, wage increases linked to productivity, internal flexibility and reduction of absenteeism. For his part, Sagardoy indicated that wage increases must be linked to productivity rather than inflation, since increasing wages based on inflation alone is not a good measure. In conclusion, he proposed a series of measures to improve collective agreements, including decentralization of sectorial, national and provincial agreements as opposed to private company agreements; making agreements flexible; and linking wage increases to productivity. TOWARDS COMPANY 2.0: TRENDS IN COMMUNICATION AND CORPORATE COLLABORATION São Paulo, May 25 Professor Josep Valor analyzed some of the uncertainties surrounding Company 2.0: How does using social networks affect employees productivity? Did you know that when employees are allowed to access social networks during work hours they are more productive? What is your company s policy on the use of networks? Are there clear guidelines? Is it true that it doesn t cost anything to have a presence on social networks? Are they the best option for gaining visibility? THANK YOU, ENTREPRENEURS During his talk, Professor Jordi Canals highlighted the role of entrepreneurs. He said, This is a time for entrepreneurs. Keep on with your work, because the world needs you. Charles Petruccelli, the President of Global Travel Services at American Express, pointed out that the travel industry has been hit hard by the recession, but also by the H1N1 pandemic and the eruption of the volcano in Iceland. With these setbacks, volume has dropped by 20 to 30 percent and many companies have reduced their travel expenditures by up to 70 percent. Thus, said Petruccelli, We have changed our model. We have optimized our spend with global solutions both off line and on line. The new model allows us to develop new solutions across the board. It is way beyond the original business of issuing an air ticket on time with a smile. Travel companies have had to quickly and radically adapt to the Internet and now they face the new challenge of expanding 18 Annual Report
