4 Child Development Brain Buzz-Understanding Brain Functioning What do our brains look like? What are the different parts of the brain? What do we know about the way our brains develop? How can we learn more? This introduction to the physiology of the human brain teaches you how the growing brain can help prepare a child for new experiences at different stages of life. This class will introduce students to resources for learning more about brain functioning. (0.3 CEUs) Tuition waiver applies; seniors pay fee only. Course: ECH089 CRN#: Session 9/16 W 401 Child Growth and Development Learn the principles of child growth and development necessary for working in programs that serve children from infancy through age eight. Social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development of young children and the implications of these areas of growth and development on group care are emphasized. This class provides the first 45 of the 90 classroom hours needed to become a teacher in programs licensed by the MSDE Office of Child Care Licensing. This valuable booklet presents a set of carefully articulated child developmental stages, combined with appropriate instructional strategies for nurturing and instructing specific age groups. This document is a vital and practical resource for teachers working in early learning environments. There is a tendency to take math and language skills out of the natural play settings within the daily activity schedule and introduce them as stand alone learning goals. 5 Montessori: Teaching Math Concepts Using the Montessori Method, children work hands-on with learning materials that make abstract concepts become clear and concrete. In this session, emphasis is placed on Montessori s method of introducing Pre-Kindergarten number concepts, including values, addition and subtraction, decimals, and value placement. You will actively participate in learning how to create activities and play math games using common daily life items found in our homes and classrooms. Course: ECH209 CRN#: Session 10/26 M 403 Montessori: Using Phonics The Montessori Method uses a tactile, kinesthetic approach to phonetics that makes it possible for children to learn to sound out words at a very early age. Children will gain the ability to read longer phonetic words, non-phonetic words, and sentences, as they gain mastery at foundational developmental levels. Storytellers are the most ancient literacy messengers in history. Stories help young children to organize their feelings and lives, and to make connections with their experiences. This class will help teachers make language come alive through materials such as puppets, flannel board pieces, and tactile picture symbols. Take storytelling to a new dimension and help children express themselves through language and exposure to classic literature. Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words. 6 Developmental Assessments for Children Six Weeks to Five Years Explore basic milestones of child growth and development for young children from early infancy to age five years. Course: ECH070 CRN#: Session 10/14 W Earth Sciences: Volcanoes Are Hot! This course is designed for professionals in the early childhood education career field to introduce topics of Earth sciences. The content includes facts and pictures describing the origin and activity of volcanos. The volcano was named after a god of fire (Vulcan) in Roman Mythology. Volcanoes are land forms where molten rock erupts through the surface of the planet Earth. Join this class to take geological science to a new level in your preschool education program. Topics include significance of the early years; learning and development in infants and toddlers; appropriate activities and interactions; and the health, safety, and nutritional needs of infants and toddlers. Completion of this course meets the Maryland state requirement for the position of an infant/toddler teacher in a child care center or family child care setting. Textbook included in fees. Activities, methods, and materials appropriate to the areas of curriculum in an early childhood program are emphasized. Attention is given to staff and parent communication and community resources. 8 Water, Water, Everywhere! This class examines the properties of water and the value of water as a life giving resource. Some basic facts include that 2/3 s of the Earth s surface is made up of water and that every human body is comprised of approximately 80% water. This class will investigate water in fun ways to assist teachers of young children in designing science lessons. Join us in an exploration of water in a variety of modalities such as engaging activities with dry ice, water crystals, jelly marbles, spray bottles, and instant snow powder. We will help children to develop new vocabulary concepts and words, understand the three different states of water (liquid, solid, vapor), and make relevant connections to everyday life using water. The class focuses on development of a comprehensive and specific written emergency plan to follow in the event of a local, state, or national emergency. This plan may be developed for center-based care settings, family child care homes, and informal provider programs. The course includes an emergency backpack, which includes materials, procedures, and local and national contact information for all participants. Topics include practices and procedures for administering over-the-counter and selected prescription medications to children in care in accordance with state child care licensing requirements, observation methods, recording procedures, forms and schedules, and safe handling techniques. 9 Professionalism Communication Skills for Child Care Professionals This course is designed for child care professionals as an introduction to the basic concepts of developing strong communication skills when working in a child care center. Topics include speaking, writing, interpersonal communication strategies, and critical techniques, with a focus on communication with parents and coworkers, and communication issues within a typical child care day. The 30-hour course reviews the Thirteen Functional Areas of learning that serves as the foundation of the CDA Credential for early childhood educators. The class reviews the content of each functional area and provides detailed information to CDA candidates to understand and prepare for the required Verification Visit Assessment materials.
