Exemplar for Internal Assessment Resource Spanish Level 2 Resource title: Interact This exemplar supports assessment against: Achievement Standard Interact using spoken Spanish to share and justify information, ideas and opinions in different situations Student and grade boundary specific exemplar The material has been gathered from student material specific to an A or B assessment resource. Date version published by Ministry of Education December 2011 To support internal assessment from 2012 This task ask students to interact by sharing and justifying information in different situations, talking about a potential problem, future plans and holidays.
Grade Boundary: Low Excellence 1. To achieve Excellence the student needs to use a range of language that is consistently fit for the purpose and audience and skilfully select from a repertoire of language features and strategies to maintain the interaction. Communication is not hindered by inconsistencies. The student shares and justifies ideas, information and opinions effectively by: justifying her opinions: e. g. creo que visitaré mi hermano en Argentina donde podré hablar espaňol todo el tiempo giving advice: e. g. creo que deberías hablar con tus padres y diles sobre tu problema, deberiías preguntarle por qué asking questions in order to get more information: e.g necesitas comprarte algo?; Necesitas mucho dinero?; O sólo un poco?; qué hiciste? The student uses language that is fit for purpose and audience in each interaction. e.g creo que deberías hablar con tus padres; con quién fuiste?; Has ido ahí?; Qué vas hacer en las vacaciones próximas?; creo que visitaré a mi hermano en Argentina The student maintains interaction through a skillfull selection of language features and strategies e.g agreeing with the other speaker's ideas e.g creo que es una buena idea tener un trabajo, problemente tienen razón, qué horror!, offering future explanation e.g no tengo familia allí, pero fui con mi familia, yo estaba muy mareada porque hacia demasiado calor, también olvide mi sombrero aquel día. Inconsistencies in the interactions do not hinder communication.e.g Cómo fueron tus vacaciones pasados?; había demasiado gente, some misprounciation (comprar menos- comprámelo?) The borderline criteria for this speaker lie with the skillful selection and use of language features. Although language features are skillfully selected and successfully used, at times this is not reflected across all pieces of evidence. (The interaction about Holidays.) Maintaining the interaction through questioning techniques used is supporting an Excellence grade, however more care is needed with the language features selected. To sit more safely at an Excellence level, the speaker needs to expand on the ideas expressed in each interaction. The range of language used needs to be revisited and using fillers to avoid long pauses are needed.
2. Grade Boundary: High Merit To achieve Merit the student needs to use a range of language that is fit for the purpose and audience and have generally successfully selection from a repertoire of language features and strategies to maintain the interaction. Communication is not significantly hindered by inconsistencies. The student shares and justifies ideas, information and opinions convincingly by: giving her opinion and offering advice: e.g: Sus padres.. tus padres son my estrictos pero es porque te aman y son protectivos, así que pienso que deberías hablar con tus padres sobre este problema asks clarifications on meaning e.g cómo se dice 'persuade', and uses it after 'puedes persuadirlos' justifying her ideas and choices: e.g: Me gustaría ir a Andalucía, porque tengo un mapa en mi dormitorio de Andalucía y hay una costa allí que se llama la costa de luz y me interesa porque pienso: por qué se llama la costa de luz?, el sol brilla más ahí? No sé. The student selects language to fit the purpose and audience. The student addresses the other speaker according to each situation. e.g: has hablado con tus padres sobre este problema?; pienso que deberías hablar con tus padres; Qué hiciste en tu últimas vacaciones?; si ganara la lotería, me gustaría ir. Interaction is maintained through a generally successful use of language and strategies. The student recognises cues in a conversation and most of the time allows the conversation to flow by seeking clarification and asking questions: e.g. pero quizás piensan que te dan suficiente dinero,? seeking clarification: perdón?, inviting agreement: sí, especialmente cerca de los servicios y los bebés and using a range of language e.g Si ganara la lotería iría, ; dónde estará el profesor..?; Me gustaría practicar los idiomas ahí. Even though inconsistencies do not hinder communication significantly, communication was not clear enough at some points: e.g: Un poco pero era bastante joven así que mis padres no las costarisieron, mericieron ; quizás pensan que dan sufici dinero; Me gustaría ver si.. me gustaría ver ayudaste, ayudando en la casa mas y quizás después tus padres..te darían suficia.. dinero. The borderline criteria for this interaction lie with the inconsistencies made, which at times makes the message delivered unclear. To reach Excellence, the speaker needs to revise verb tenses, pay attention to gender and agreement, which would avoid difficulty in expressing ideas.
3. Grade Boundary: Low Merit To achieve Merit the student needs to use a range of language that is fit for the purpose and audience and have generally successfully selection from a repertoire of language features and strategies to maintain the interaction. Communication is not significantly hindered by inconsistencies. The student shares and justifies ideas, information and opinions convincingly by: supporting her ideas and giving explanations e.g Si pero tus padres quizás piensan que quizás no necesitas compra muchas cosas porque se preocupan que malgastas el dinero. giving advice: e.g. Deberías convencer a tus amigos que toman drogar y fumar no es muy bueno para sus saludes y quizás hablar con tus padres sobre ese problema porque son tus amigos y no es muy bueno para buscar amigos nuevos. offering solution for specific problems: e. g deberías hablar con un consejero de las carreras y necesitas entender qué cosas estás muy bueno. The student uses a range of language that is fit for purpose and audience e.g Deberías hablar más con tus padres,, ahora no sé que. que haré en el futuro porque antes me gustaría hacer algo acerca de la bilogía, por ejemplo para hacerme una médica o trabajare en un laboratorio. The student maintains interactions through a generally successful use of language and strategies: enquiring to get more information e.g Si pues tus amigas tomas drogas?, Pero por qué te gustas los amigos?,, Pero necesitas muchos dinero? To sit safely in the Merit category the speaker could revise the verb formation, gender agreement and work on some strategies of communication, such as fillers, to avoid long pauses in the interactions and improve on the quality of communication.
4. Grade Boundary: High Achieved To achieve this standard, the student needs to interact using spoken Spanish to share information and justify ideas and opinions in different situations. Communication is achieved overall, despite inconsistencies. The student shares and justifies ideas, information and opinions by: giving advice, e.g deberías hablar con tus padres de tu problema; podrías dice que no, no dan suficiente dinero y que necesitas más dinero; which is at times conivincing e.g creo que tienes que ser algo que te gusta mucho y.. si se quieres estudiar, estudiar mucho y hacer algo que te divertirse y pero también puedes trabajar. supporting his ideas: Y quiero estudiar porque creo que la música es muy interesante y quiero ser un produsor de música. acknowledging the other speaker and asking a few questions to seek futher understanding e.g A sí Por qué? Te gusta Australia? Cuántos primos tienes? The student correctly uses a range of language features and a few strategies in the interactions, however this is not even across all pieces of evidence e.g Cuando termine el colegio en dos años quiero estudiar el el audio de ingeniería, sí, y, quiero estudiar en la universidad de Mainz y es en la ciudad de Auckland; en dos años cuando termine de estudiar, quiero viviré en las Estados Unidos, y sí ; Overall, communication is achieved, despite inconsistencies. e.g. Ah.. podrías decir a ellos que que te..que podrían confianzan en tú y no preocupan con tus amigos y sí The borderline criteria for this interaction is exemplified in the use of language features which is limited and repetitive (evident in interaction about holidays) e.g. Fui cuando I can t remember el año pasado y fui a Los Angeles y..ah yeah, hum, te gusta Australia? Fui a Disneyland y era muy divertido; fui el año pasado y fui a Los Angeles y ; fuimos en avión, and the inconsistencies present across all evidence. To achieve with Merit, the student needs to expand on his ideas consistently throughout the interactions. The student also needs to use a range of language features and strategies to avoid long pauses in each interaction. Revision of verb formation and other basic grammar is also recommended in order to move up from Achieved to Merit. Generally successful selection of language is needed for Merit level, and this is not shown in all evidence provided.
5. Grade Boundary: Low Achieved To achieve this standard, the student needs to interact using spoken Spanish to share information and justify ideas and opinions in different situations. Communication is achieved overall, despite inconsistencies. The student shares information and at times justifies opinions by: giving advice.e.g Deberías hablar con tus padres; deberías hablar con tus padres sobre tus amigos y explicar. que tus amigos son muy simpáticos y no toman drogas y no fuman, fuman. justifying at times his own ideas: e.g Deberías continuar con tus educación y posiblemente vas a universidad o,.si pu si puedes practicar los deportes porque los deportes son muy bien, si quieras vivir una vida sana; en Australia comimos mucho carne porque mis primas son muy musculioso y mi padre es bastante gordo ahora. At times, the student uses language features which are fit for purpose and audience e.g iré a un universidad extranjero; debería decir que tú necesitas más dinero porque no tienen suficiente dinero. The student uses some strategies in his interactions by asking questions in order to find out more about a specific problem: e.g Por qué querrás tener mucho dinero? Necesitas comprar muchas cosas? To sit safely at an Achieved level, ideas need more justification: e.g. Posiblemente Inglaterra porque es muy lindo en a Inglaterra. The student has some difficulty understanding and can work on some strategies to avoid the interference of own language in the conversations: e.g What does it mean?; What does digo mean?; Se debe di pause ah cómo se dice say? The student also needs to revise verb formation, verb tenses and agreement as often communication is affected by these inconsistencies.
6. Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved To achieve this standard, the student needs to interact using spoken Spanish to share information and justify ideas and opinions in different situations. Communication will be achieved overall, despite inconsistencies. The student shares some ideas and information at some level by: giving advice with some justification: e.g. Pienso que para tu futuro porque es muy importante y estudia signaturas que te gusta porque.hum.porque es muy importante, sí. justifying at some level her ideas e.g. Terminaré colegio iré a la universidad y estudiaré la médica porque me gusta saiencias y médica es muy interesante. Some attempt at using language features correctly are made e.g terminaré colegio, estudiaré la médica. Inconsistencies hinder communication in parts of the evidence, particularly as there are a significant amount of partial sentences. e.g Qué.en tus last holidays? Con quién? Long pauses and mispronunciation deter from the message being communicated e.g No fue muy abrido (aburrido). Partner does not understand the word: abrido. To move into the Achieved level there needs to be evidence of more mastery of language at this level to ensure that the interaction is comprehensible.
