1 RICHMOND TODAY SEPTEMBER 2014 A CHEVRON RICHMOND PUBLICATION Chevron Richmond Scholarships a Win for City BY MADELINE KRONENBERG Thousands of Richmond students will be able to attend college thanks to Chevron Richmond s $35 million pledge to fund college scholarships over the next 10 years. The pledge is part of a $90 million Environmental and Community Investment Agreement, one of the many community benefits of the Refinery Modernization Project that was approved by the City Council in July. This means that Richmond public high school graduates who qualify will get the help needed to pursue a college education. At a time when the cost of college increases each year, this commitment from Chevron will provide extraordinary new possibilities for Richmond residents who attend the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD). This scholarship program will eliminate financial barriers to success and will motivate teachers to help all students graduate and pursue a two or four-year degree. The pledge also offers enormous opportunities to leverage more funding from nonprofits and other sources to provide even greater opportunities for students. I am incredibly excited about this opportunity, which I believe could become a national model for student success. 2 Fuel Your School Helps Power Classrooms BY LEAH CASEY Public school teachers in Richmond and West County work hard to make learning come alive for their students. Chevron s Fuel Your School program helps make their job easier by helping fund new supplies for teachers to engage their students in learning. Since 2010, Fuel Your School has contributed nearly $4 million to Alameda and Contra Costa County public schools through DonorsChoose.org, a website where teachers list their needs through project requests and donors can choose projects to support. With these funds, 519 schools have received materials and supplies their teachers need. As part of the program, Chevron will donate $1 from fuel purchases of eight or more gallons during the month of October at participating Chevron and Texaco stations, up to $1 million. Because of this program, students in Richmond have received hands-on science materials to help increase their scientific awareness among other materials for learning in all subjects. Teacher needs vary widely from pencils and microscope slides to books and live tarantulas for use with biology lessons. Teachers began submitting eligible project requests on September 1 for this year s Fuel Your School program. The project submission period ends November 30, 2014, or earlier if all funds have been exhausted by eligible projects. The project submission period opened on September 1, and teachers are encouraged to post projects as soon as possible for the best chance of receiving funding. 3 1 WEST CONTRA COSTA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT $1,073,500 (WCCUSD) Chevron Richmond supports programs to improve the quality of K-12 education offered to all students who attend WCCUSD. Chevron Richmond funds programs that support classroom learning, increase student test scores, give teachers the tools and resources needed to be more effective educators and strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that jobs in STEM fields will grow 17 percent by 2018 nearly double the growth for non-stem fields. 2 WEST COUNTY PUBLIC EDUCATION FUND Chevron Richmond has a long and proud partnership with The Ed Fund, a non-profit that provides funding and resources to schools, teachers and students in the WCCUSD. Chevron Richmond s support for the program has prepared more than 1,000 Richmond students to pursue degrees in math and science. 4 CA UNIVERSITY, $150,000 MATHEMATICS ACADEMY (MAA) The Mathematics Achievement Academy is a fourweek summer math program that prepares WCCUSD middle and high school students for college. Students enrolled in the academy are able to access resources and gain skills needed to prepare for and succeed in challenging STEM-degree programs. $86,000 5 PROJECT LEAD THE WAY (PLTW) PLTW provides STEM programming, curriculum and teacher training to help students succeed in STEM fields. Chevron Richmond s support allows PLTW to further enhance STEM learning in WCCUSD classrooms and provides the training and resources needed to better educate WCCUSD engineering academy students. This year, students in K-12th grade are invited to the annual event on September 11 at Nevin Center Park, where students and families will be treated to free food, games and family fun. Thanks to Chevron Richmond, more than 1,000 children will also receive much-needed backpacks full of school supplies. These go a long way to helping Richmond s at-risk youth realize that they can achieve and do well in school. Chevron Richmond has supported our mission since we opened our doors in It s a great partnership, and I m proud of the Richmond residents who we continue to help as a result.
