3 : Technology Enhanced Elementary Spanish Program TEACHER PAGE Before the podcast Talk about various families, and family members with the class. And talk about what they like to receive as presents for a birthday. See example questions on following page to start asking students in Spanish about their families. If a student is reluctant to talk about his/her own family, allow them to choose a TV family, or book family, and talk about characters from that story instead. In some Hispanic families, there is a reluctance to share personal information about the family. And aunts, uncles, cousins may be considered part of the immediate family. Cultural note: In English, when we say last name, we really mean surname. In Spanish, surname is apellido. Apellido does not mean last name. Many Hispanics use 2 apellidos (surnames). The first surname is the surname of the father, and the second is the surname of the mother. So, we need to be careful about asking a student for his/her last name. If he/she responds with the last name by position of how he/she writes his/her name, we will be given the mother s surname, not the father s. Example: Father s name: Tomás Pérez Rodriguez Mother s name: María Quiñones Alamo Child s name: José Pérez Quiñones So, in our class roster, José should be alphabetized under Pérez, his father s first surname. Some schools understand this custom, and some do not. So when a student transfers from another school, he/she may be added to the roster incorrectly. For more information: During the podcast This is a longer story. Pause as needed to check student understanding. Or, break into 2 separate sessions. Focus on the family vocabulary that your students are ready to learn. If they already know most of the words in the podcast, then you can add hijo (son), and hija (daughter). Otherwise, work on parents, grandparents, brother and sister. After the podcast (or as a break) Sing Happy Birthday in Spanish as practice. (Add a Spanish verse whenever you sing to someone on his/her birthday in class.) Lesson 22 Page 3

Un hermano se llama Tom. El otro hermano se llama George. (One brother is named Tom. The other brother is named George.) Tengo 1 hermana. (I have one sister.) Mi hermana se llama Eliza. Es el cumpleaños de Elena. Elena va a tener una fiesta para su cumpleaños. Unos miembros de su familia vienen a su casa con regalos. Tres miembros de su familia vienen con regalos. El tío viene. La tía viene. Y su abuela viene. Su tío, su tía y su abuela vienen. El abuelo no viene. Vienen con regalos. Elena está contenta porque le gustan los regalos. Primer, el tío le da un regalo. El tío le da un libro muy bueno. Elena le dice, Gracias. Pero, no le gusta el regalo. Elena no está contenta. Está triste. Segundo, la tía le da un regalo. La tía le da una camisa con muchos gatos. Elena le dice, Gracais. Pero, a Elena no le gusta la camisa. Elena está triste. No está contenta. Por último, su abuela le da un regalo. Su abuela le da un hipopótamo pequeño. It is a special day. It is the birthday of Elena. Elena is going to have a party for her birthday. Some members of her family come to her house with gifts. Three members of her family come with gifts. The uncle comes. The aunt comes. And her grandmother comes. Her uncle, her aunt, and her grandmother come. The grandfather does not come. They come with gifts. Elena is happy because she likes gifts. First, the uncle gives her a gift. The uncle gives her a very good book. Elena says to him, Thanks. But she does not like the gift. Elena is not happy. She is sad. Second, the aunt gives her a gift. The aunt gives her a shirt with many cats. Elena says to her, Thanks. But, Elena does not like the shirt. Elena is sad. She is not happy. Finally, her grandmother gives her a gift. Her grandmother gives her a small hippopotamus. Elena says to her, Thanks, Grandmother. Elena, yes (for emphasis), likes the small hippopotamus. Elena is happy. And Elena, gives a hug to her grandmother.
