1 DUAL IMMERSION PROGRAM INFORMATION PRESCHOOL PRESENTATION SEPTEMBER 10, :30 P.M. Presented by Dr. Norma R. Delgado, Director of Curriculum & Instruction 1

2 The United States Government has identified French, Chinese, Spanish, German, and Portuguese languages as critical languages. The designation means that the national need for trained speakers in these languages exceeds the number of bilingual speakers available. These languages are also critical for the U.S. National security and economic competitiveness. 2

3 DUAL IMMERSION PROGRAM Background (Informational) Goal: to develop literacy skills in both English and the target language at the same time. 1. Dual Language Immersion provides a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time. Students receive math, science, and social studies instruction in a target language. The teaching strategies used supports students in learning the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another target language. 2. Immersion classrooms are complex settings where the learning of academic content and second language acquisition are expected to develop concurrently. 3. Students learn content through both their native language and the target language. Simultaneously translation is never used. By the end of 5 th grade, all students in the program are proficient in English, proficient in the target language, and at or above grade level academic benchmarks. 4. The English speaker is not at risk of losing the English language nor does dual immersion replace English with another language, but it provides the students the opportunity to acquire a second language. 5. Dual language programs are on the rise nationwide for the past decade, and now number around 30,000. 3

4 DUAL IMMERSION PROGRAM "Background" (informativo) Objetivo: desarrollar destrezas de alfabetización en inglés y el idioma de destino al mismo tiempo. 1. Inmersión dual proporciona una manera de aprender contenidos académicos mientras adquiere otro idioma al mismo tiempo. Los estudiantes reciben instrucción de matemáticas, Ciencias y estudios sociales en un idioma de destino. Las estrategias de enseñanza utilizadas apoya a los estudiantes en el aprendizaje de los conceptos y habilidades para el área temática y desarrollar la habilidad de leer, escribir, hablar y escuchar en otro idioma de destino. 2. Aulas de inmersión son configuraciones complejas donde el aprendizaje de adquisición del lenguaje académico de contenido y la segunda se espera desarrollar simultáneamente. 3. Los estudiantes aprenden contenidos a través de su lengua materna y la lengua de destino. Al mismo tiempo traducción nunca se utiliza. Al final del quinto grado, todos los estudiantes en el programa son competentes en inglés, competente en el idioma de destino y en o por encima de las pruebas académico nivel de grado. 4. El hablante de inglés no está en riesgo de perder el idioma inglés ni inmersión dual reemplaza a Inglés con otro idioma, pero proporciona a los estudiantes la oportunidad de adquirir un segundo idioma. 5. 5 90:10 Model; In Kindergarten and First grade, 10% of instruction is taught in English, while 90% is taught in the target language. In Second grade, an additional 10% is added to instruction in English. The percentage increases gradually until instruction in both languages meets 50:50 by 5th grade. In 90:10, your child begins reading in target language first and adds English later, in Third grade. 90:10 modelo; en Kindergarten y primer grado, 10% de la instrucción se imparte en inglés, mientras que el 90% se imparte en el idioma de destino.
